Joaquin Benoit needs two pitches for save

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Tigers reliever Joaquin Benoit, who will get save chances when Jose Valverde is unavailable like he was Monday, recorded a save against the Twins. Benoit only needed two pitches to do the job.  Benoit entered in a 4-3 game after Drew Smyly got the first two outs in the ninth. He induced a grounder to end it for his second save of the year. His ERA is 2.31.

Jose Valverde won't be used on three straight days

CBSSports.com Fantasy — After pitching on consecutive days over the weekend, Tigers manager Jim Leyland said he would not turn to reliever Jose Valverde to close out Monday's game against the Twins, if a save opportunity arose. Leyland said Joaquin Benoit would fill in as closer Monday, if needed. "I'm not going to do something stupid," Leyland said, per MLB.com. Valverde has retired all nine hitters he's faced since his promotion from the minors. He's recorded two saves in three outings.

Joaquin Benoit is Tigers' backup closer

CBSSports.com Fantasy — After pitching on consecutive days over the weekend, Tigers manager Jim Leyland said he would not turn to reliever Jose Valverde to close out Monday's game against the Twins. If a save opportunity arose, Leyland said Joaquin Benoit will be called on to close out the game. Benoit converted his only save opporunity before Valverde was promoted from the minors to be the team's closer. Benoit has a 2.38 ERA and 13 strikeouts through 11 1/3 innings.

Overanalysis: Joaquin Benoit shuts the door for the Tigers

Bless You Boys — Longtime readers know that I am a fan of using your best relief pitchers in trouble spots instead of confining them to defined roles or innings. Jim Leyland, normally one to use said roles, deviated from his normal tendencies tonight and it paid off in a big way for the Tigers. More: It was as if Jose Valverde never left Game recap Situation: top of the seventh inning, runners on first and second, two outs. With Al Alburquerque suffering from some hip tightness, Jim Leyland decided to bring Joaquin Benoit out of the bullpen to face the left-handed Mike Moustakas. After a 1-0 pitch m...

You should drop Joaquin Benoit for Bruce Rondon

CBSSports.com Fantasy — With Bruce Rondon getting called up, the Tigers' closer situation looks like it can go two different ways right now, and neither ends with Joaquin Benoit getting saves.  Either Rondon -- who saved three games and struck out nine in 7 2/3 scoreless minor league innings with Toledo -- gets a couple chances, converts them, and runs away with the job (thus fulfilling the Dombrowski Prophecy of 2012), or Rondon's control issues pop up and Jose Valverde slides in as the closer, as he is currently inching his way back up to the majors.  Benoit, at best, becomes the backup (maybe Valverde is released ...

Tigers' bullpen racks up 11 Ks in loss

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Tigers pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Angels, with 11 coming from relievers Al Alburquerque, Joaquin Benoit and Phil Coke. It's the most strikeouts for the Tigers' bullpen since it had 13 in an extra-inning game in Cleveland two years ago, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Joaquin Benoit notches first save

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Tigers reliever Joaquin Benoit notched his first save of the season Wednesday. Though the game went 14 innings, manager Jim Leyland did not use Benoit until there was a save situation. It was a shaky appearance, as Benoit gave up two hits, and needed Justin Smoak to be thrown out at the plate earn the save. He's the favorite to receive the majority of the saves for Detroit going forward.

Overanalysis: Torii Hunter, Prince Fielder, Brayan Pena combine to finish off Mariners

Bless You Boys — Alright, now that I have had certain luxuries like sleep and coffee, let's break this down. Situation: bottom of the 14th inning, runner on first, two outs. Joaquin Benoit hangs an 0-2 fastball to Mariners second baseman Dustin Ackley, who drills it into the right field corner for extra bases. Torii Hunter gets to the ball and gets it back to the infield very quickly, making a pretty accurate throw for the situation. However, he airmails Omar Infante, the first cutoff man on the play. Here's one of the keys to the play. On long relay plays such as this, one player is designated as the...

Three stars: Jhonny Peralta hits three-run homer; Justin Verlander, Joaquin Benoit get job done

Grand Rapids Press — The Tigers had plenty of noteworthy performances in a 7-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics. OAKLAND, Calif. -- Three stars for the Detroit Tigers on Saturday afternoon in their 7-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics: Jhonny Peralta   FIRST STARThe bombs hit by Torii Hunter and Prince Fielder win based on style points, but Jhonny Peralta had the biggest home run of the game for the Tigers, a three-run shot in the fourth inning. Jose Valverde on Jim Leyland's mind

CBSSports.com Fantasy — In case you missed Tigers manager Jim Leyland's tepid endorsement of Joaquin Benoit as his closer Thursday, he ended it this way: "But it's not going to be doable every day," he told MLB.com "You're liable to see anybody at any time ... until something else happens, if it does happen." Something else like ... Jose Valverde coming up from the minor leagues? Seems likely. Leyland praised the Tigers decision to sign the 35-year-old a week ago, calling it a no-brainer. Of course, Valverde first has to prove he can get batters out consistently, and the way last year ended for him, that's easier sai...

What is Joaquin Benoit's role exactly?

CBSSports.com Fantasy — In case you missed it, Tigers manager Jim Leyland sort of endorsed Joaquin Benoit as his closer Thursday, citing his experience, consistency and so on and so forth. But oh, he added it could still be "anybody at any time." Thanks for clearing that up. My takeaway is that Benoit appears to be the Tigers reliever to own right now in Fantasy. Leyland's hedging is most likely because he doesn't want to use the right-hander more than two days in a row and because he doesn't want to write off Jose Valverde just yet. Of course, if Benoit works the eighth inning tonight, I'll likely change my tune. Th...
