5/19: Felix Day Game Thread

Lookout Landing — One of the most interesting and frustrating things about baseball is that success doesn't perfectly correlate with victory. Yesterday a haunted, shivering Joe Saunders allowed nearly half (13 out of 29) of his opponents to reach base, but only gave up four runs and kept the Mariners, nominally, in the ballgame. Meanwhile, a Mariners bullpen that has, on average, been fairly strong throughout the season, has been slapped with two losses on consecutive days. One comes away with the sense that it isn't fair, or that it is by definition fair, or that there is no such thing as fairness, bas...

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Indians third baseman Mark Reynolds hit his 12th home run of the season Saturday during a win over the Mariners. Reynolds homered in the fifth inning off former teammate Joe Saunders. Reynolds went 2 for 5 with three RBI. He had an RBI single in the first inning and another on a fielder's choice in the ninth to give the Indians the walk-off win. Joe Saunders stays consistent on road

CBSSports.com Fantasy — He wasn't pitching at Safeco Field and so Joe Saunders couldn't have been expected to have a much better performance Saturday in Cleveland. Saunders, who has been awful on the road and a stud at home for the Mariners this season, avoided taking another road loss against the Indians thanks to back-to-back homers in the top of the ninth. He gave up four runs on 11 hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings with two strikeouts as his ERA stands at 5.64 for the year. Saunders (3-4) has gone 3-0 over four starts at Safeco Field with just three runs allowed over 30 2/3 innings. Saunders' next start comes...

Tommy Milone was supposed to be Joe Saunders. He is something more than Joe Saunders, at least for now; the same could once be said of Joe Saunders. In his daily notes, professional baseball writer Carson Cistulli provides a NERD score for each ballgame. The NERD score seeks to measure the watchability of each game, based on how exciting each starting pitcher and team are. Joe Saunders received a NERD score of zero. Scores below zero, it should be noted, are rounded up to zero. The lineups! 1. Adam Rosales (R) SS 1. Michael Saunders (L) CF 2. Jed Lowrie (S) 2B 2. Ja...
  • Blue Jays 10, Mariners 2 – three-game winning streak comes to an end.
The Seattle Mariners’ winning streak ended at three games with a thud Sunday. Starting pitcher Joe Saunders continued to struggle away from Safeco Field, as he has all season. The Mariners failed to come up with hits against former teammate Brandon Morrow. And 22,937 Toronto fans at the Rogers Centre didn’t feel the need to boo their struggling team for the first time in a while. It all added up to a 10-2 Mariners’ loss. Still, there was no anger afterwards. Seattle managed to take 2 of 3 games from the Blue Jays to win its third series in a … Read more »
