Cleveland Indians report: Three top relievers give up homers but Bryan Shaw, Matt Albers solid in crazy win over Mariners

Akron Beacon Journal — CLEVELAND: Closer Chris Perez, setup man Vinnie Pestano and seventh-inning specialist Joe Smith gave up home runs in consecutive innings Monday, and the Indians still beat the Seattle Mariners 10-8 in 10 innings at Progressive Field. When the team’s three best relievers get dumped on in the same game, it’s probably an aberration. But nobody will know for certain until their next appearance or two.“You don’t often see an opponent score in three straight [late] innings and you win the game,” manager Terry Francona said. “Yeah, it’s interesting.”Pestano gave up a home run to Kyle Seager that tie...

Indians notebook — Pestano’s elbow ‘a little creaky’

Akron Beacon Journal — CLEVELAND: Many observers were puzzled when manager Terry Francona summoned Cody Allen to pitch with two out, one on and one run home in the seventh inning of Friday night’s game against the Twins. With the Indians holding a one-run lead in that part of the game, the obvious choice of the manager has been Joe Smith.“Vinnie’s elbow is a little creaky,” Francona said. “I tried to stay away from him. That’s why the order [of the relievers] was a little different than normal.”In other words, Francona was saving Smith to be his setup man, Pestano’s job, if he needed him.“Vinnie threw a bullpen this ...

Down On The Farm: April 21

DRaysBay — The big news of the day is that Hak-Ju Lee suffered a serious knee injury which should cost him the rest of the season, per Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. Lee was having a fantastic start to the year, hitting .419/.537/.605. More importantly, he was only striking out 16.4% of the time while walking 20% of the time. Lee is one of the Rays best prospects, and there was a chance that he could vie for the starting shortstop position as soon as the beginning of the 2014 season. It looks like this injury may push back that time frame. Triple-A Durham Bulls (12-5) In the first game of thei...

Jeff Niemann to Disabled List, Brandon Gomes promoted

Joe Smith of the Times has all the details: #Rays Niemann said he'd been fighting it through spring, really came to head last few days in bullpen. — Joe Smith (@TBTimesRays2) April 5, 2013 Niemann said he's disappointed, but knew yesterday when phone rang in pen and he hoped it wasn't for him that he had to go on DL — Joe Smith (@TBTimesRays2) Ap...
