Indians activate centerfielder Michael Bourn, takes John Axford's vacant roster spot

As expected, the Indians activated centerfielder Michael Bourn Friday afternoon, leaving the speedy centerfielder six weeks to try to help take a .500 team and make them a playoff contender down the stretch. On the disabled list since July 6th with another left hamstring injury (his third setback of the season), Bourn took the vacant roster spot of right-handed reliever John Axford, the Tribe’s former closer who was claimed on outright waivers Thursday by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Whether or not Bourn, who has been plagued by hamstring issues since the Indians signed him to a four-year,...

Pittsburgh Pirates claim John Axford off waivers from Cleveland Indians

Indians reliever John Axford has been claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates. As a free agent last winter, Axford signed to a one-year, $4.5 million contract to be the Indians' closer. That lasted barely a month. Axford was moved out of the closer's role in early May and he has been pitching in a setup and middle relief role ever since.

Indians put former closer John Axford on waivers, is claimed by Pirates

The Pirates claimed former Indians closer John Axford off of outright trade waivers late Thursday afternoon, meaning that while the Indians won’t receive compensation for him, Pittsburgh pays the approximately $1.1 million remaining on the right-hander’s salary this season. The Indians signed Axford to a one-year, $4.5 million deal in mid-December. But the 6-foot-5, 220-pounder was out as the Tribe’s closer by May 9th when his command issues became all too evident. Indians beat Mariners 2-0; Corey Kluber pitches complete-game shutout

CLEVELAND: The Indians owed it to Corey Kluber to make sure their starting pitcher earned a win Wednesday night against the visiting Seattle Mariners.Kluber deserved a victory in his previous start last Thursday in Kansas City in which he took a perfect game into the seventh inning before giving up an infield run. He then lost his shutout bid when Ryan Raburn’s crazy spiked ball allowed a run to score and then reliever John Axford gave up a walk-off hit in the 14th inning. The Indians were on a mission to make it up to their ace — even if it meant beating Mariners right-hander Felix...

Indians’ John Axford takes step backward during Royals series, but still aims to be closer again

John Axford had been inching along, quietly taking one step after another toward being the consistent closer he was at the beginning of the season for the Indians.Slowly but surely, Axford was no longer being relegated to meaningless middle relief in blowout games destined to end in losses. Instead, manager Terry Francona was increasingly trusting him again late in close games.“I’ve been working as hard as I can to prepare myself to get ready to go back in [the closer’s] role — if that time ever comes,” Axford said. “If not, I’m just going to be as strong as I can, do the best...
