A’s John Axford exects to be throwing again soon

Reliever John Axford said Saturday that he’s probably just days away from resuming throwing as he recovers from a right shoulder strain. Axford said he had some issues Wednesday with sock throws - throwing a baseball down the length of a long sock to mimic a normal delivery - but he believes that was because he found the sock toss “really awkward.” Axford tried to warm up April 4 but felt some shoulder discomfort and the next day was placed on the DL retroactive to April 2, so the set-up man has not pitched this season.

Return of A’s Axford delayed

The A’s were hoping to get John Axford back once he’s eligible to come off the 10-day disabled list on Wednesday, but that won’t happen. Axford was instructed not to play catch for a week, at which time he’ll be reassessed. The MRI results on his right shoulder showed a Grade 1 strain and no further damage, and manager Bob Melvin said, “We don’t think it’s too serious.” Axford felt shoulder tightness when throwing a curve in the bullpen during Tuesday’s game. Asked about staying clear of the DL his first eight years in the majors, Axford said, I take pride in that --...

John Axford goes on DL with shoulder strain

John Axford goes on DL with shoulder strain A’s reliever John Axford was placed on the disabled list for the first time in his career. The eight-year veteran was diagnosed with a strained shoulder after he felt tightness tossing a curve in the bullpen during Tuesday’s game. With the new 10-day DL, the A’s hope Axford could miss only a week; they can backdate the stint three days. Jesse Hahn was recalled from Triple-A Nashville and will serve in long relief. Melvin said hard-throwing Frankie Montas could be asked to pitch in late-game duties. The decision not to have reliever...

A's John Axford goes on disabled list with shoulder injury

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Athletics reliever John Axford was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday retroactive to Sunday with a strained right shoulder. The right-hander experienced tightness after throwing a curveball warming up Tuesday night and didn't enter the game against the Angels. He was undergoing an MRI exam ...

What’s next after A’s place John Axford on DL?

Without appearing in a game this season, A’s reliever John Axford was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained shoulder. Because the A’s can backtrack Axford’s time on the DL three days, they’re hoping he could miss only a week. The right-hander would have been available in the eighth inning Tuesday if the A’s were trailing, Melvin said. Melvin said Casilla had to be cleared for the opener by passing tests on the mound, defensively and in the weight room. Jesse Hahn was recalled from Triple-A Nashville to take Axford’s place and will serve in long relief.

Oakland A’s place John Axford on DL, bring up Jesse Hahn

The Oakland A’s placed relief pitcher John Axford on the 10-day disabled list on Wednesday, the team announced. The right-hander has a strained shoulder and his DL stint is retroactive to April 2. To replace him on the active roster, fellow right-hander Jesse Hahn was recalled from Triple-A Nashville. Axford, 34, hasn’t yet pitched this season, though he was active during spring training and appeared in eight Cactus League games. He’s probably not part of the late-inning closing committee (Madson, Casilla, Dull, Doo?), but he still represents a solid veteran arm for the middle...
