And Sandy Alderson cited that statistic Tuesday as a reason for signing John Mayberry Jr. to a one-year, $1.45 million contract. Alderson suggested that Mayberry "checked all the boxes" because he was willing to accept primarily a bench role in addition to being capable against left-handed pitching.

NEW YORK -- In addition to his $1.45 million base salary, John Mayberry Jr. can earn an additional $500,000 in performance bonuses based on plate appearances. The breakdown, via the Associated Press: Mayberry would get $50,000 apiece for plate appearances 200, 250, 300, 350, 400 and 450. He then would get $100,000 apiece at 500 and 550 plate appearances. Mayberry is projected to only start against left-handed pitching, so the higher thresholds will be difficult to reach.
