Mets 2, Nationals 0: Jerry Blevins, Matt den Dekker debut

VIERA, Fla. -- Jonathon Niese tossed six scoreless innings and debuting lefty specialist Jerry Blevins struck out Bryce Harper as the New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals, 2-0, on Tuesday in the final matchup between the NL East rivals before Opening Day. Ruben Tejada contributed an RBI single and John Mayberry Jr. homered, both against left-hander Gio Gonzalez. Niese -- who revealed he will start the season's fifth game, at Turner Field against the Atlanta Braves on April 11 -- limited the Nats to four hits while striking out three in a 78-pitch effort.

Jonathon Niese finally feels healthy again, and it shows

No longer confronted with the need to conceal the extent of his injuries, Mets lefthander Jonathon Niese has been an open book this spring training.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Jonathon Niese retired eight straight batters to open his outing, then ran out of steam. Niese allowed the next four batters to reach and departed after 52 pitches in what became a 6-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox at Tradition Field on Sunday afternoon. Tyler Pill inherited the bases loaded from Niese in the third inning and walked Bryce Brentz to force in a run that evened the score at 2. The prospect then rallied to coax an inning-ending fielder’s choice groundout from Bryan LaHair.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. FIRST PITCH: Let the games begin! OK, it’s only an intrasquad game on Tuesday, but it’s something. On the eve of the Grapefruit League schedule, the Mets will face themselves at noon at Tradition Field. David Wright, Michael Cuddyer and Curtis Granderson all will play, according to Terry Collins. The pitchers for the Team Blue: Jonathon Niese, Rafael Montero, Sean Gilmartin, Carlos Torres and Vic Black. The pitchers for the Team Orange: Zack Wheeler, Jenrry Mejia, Buddy Carlyle and Jeurys Familia.
