Need for offense ends Niese's night early

Manager Terry Collins might have left his starter, Jonathon Niese, in the game longer. Certainly, Niese thought he had more to give. In the end, the hope for offense outweighed giving him a few more innings. With a runner at third and two outs and a chance to tie the game, Collins elected to pinch hit Niese (5-6) in the sixth. Collins sent Bobby Abreu up for his left-hander, but Brewers manager Ron Roenicke pulled starter Wily Peralta (12-6) in favor of his left-handed reliever, Zach Duke.

Niese healthy, but rusty in return

SEATTLE -- The good news: Jonathon Niese felt healthy. Jonathon Niese #49 SPNew York Mets 2014 STATS GM18 W5 L5 BB30 K80 ERA3.13 The bad news: His layoff left him without his customary sharpness. Niese surrendered four earned runs on 11 hits and two walks in six innings in his return from the disabled list as the Seattle Mariners beat the Mets, 5-2, Monday at Safeco Field. "My arm felt good -- a little rusty," Niese said. "I could tell I hadn't pitched in a while.

Jonathon Niese looks rusty in 5-2 loss to Mariners

Jonathon Niese rested his hand on his hip and softly swept the dirt with his foot, waiting for pitching coach Dan Warthen to reach the mound. Over the stadium loudspeakers, the old Shirelles song blared: "Mama said there'd be days like this . . . "

Mets will watch Niese closely

Jonathon Niese #49 SPNew York Mets 2014 STATS GM17 W5 L4 BB28 K74 ERA2.96 SEATTLE -- While Jonathon Niese does not have a strict pitch count on Monday night, Terry Collins said the staff will watch him closely. Niese's velocity has been down this season, which partially prompted the Mets to skip his final first-half start and place the southpaw on the disabled list. As a result, Niese takes the mound against the Mariners having not pitched since July 4.

Carlyle DFA'd to clear Niese spot

Buddy Carlyle #44 RPNew York Mets 2014 STATS GM5 W1 L0 BB3 K7 ERA1.29 SAN DIEGO -- The Mets have designated right-handed reliever Buddy Carlyle for assignment to clear the roster spot for Monday's activation of Jonathon Niese from the disabled list. Carlyle, 36, has produced a 1.29 ERA in five major league appearances this season. He also was outrighted to Las Vegas on June 7 after clearing waivers. That time, Carlyle accepted the assignment to Triple-A.

Niese returning; Matsuzaka headed to pen

SAN DIEGO -- Jonathon Niese is poised to return from the disabled list on Monday to face the Seattle Mariners, Terry Collins confirmed Sunday. The manager added that Daisuke Matsuzaka is now a reliever, although he will be on standby Monday in case Niese has an issue in his first game action since a 12-pitch effort on July 4. Niese officially has been on the DL with a left shoulder strain. The Fourth of July start separately was shortened by getting struck with a line drive in the lower back.

Niese goes on disabled list, reluctantly

NEW YORK -- In the end, Jonathon Niese didn't fight the decision. In the end, the New York Mets left-hander said he agreed with the team's decision to put him on the disabled list to try to strengthen his shoulder, even as he insisted again that he's not exactly hurt. Jonathon Niese #49 SPNew York Mets 2014 STATS GM17 W5 L4 BB28 K74 ERA2.96 "I mean, I could pitch now," Niese said Sunday. "This isn't an injury." The Mets called it a left shoulder strain, but it's really a break to allow Niese to strengthen a shoulder that he admits has felt fatigued in the past month.

Liner may hurt Dice-K, not 'cheated' Niese

NEW YORK -- Jonathon Niese feels fine after getting struck with a first-inning line drive in the love handle on his left side Friday. So the southpaw wants to come back early and get two more starts before the All-Star break. And that appears to be bad news for Daisuke Matsuzaka, who could now end up in the bullpen without making another start. Niese was pulled after 12 pitches from an eventual 6-5 win against the Texas Rangers, after getting struck in the lower back by a line drive off the bat of Alex Rios.
