Niese survives cold, Cardinals, line drives

Jonathon Niese has apparently got this cold-weather thing figured out. With a game-time temperature of 51 degrees and ridiculous winds that clearly impacted both starting pitchers, Niese fought his way through 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball to earn his first win of the season. NEW YORK First Pitch: The Mets were 7-7, 8-8, 9-9 and now they're 10-10, with two games remaining in this week's series against the Cardinals. Jonathon Niese (0-2, 2.84), who starts for the Mets tonight, has had some success against St. Louis. The Mets have won four of his five career starts against the Cards. Niese could be a tough matchup for the Cardinals, whose .180 batting average against left-handers is the worst in the majors so far this season.

Niese looks good, but takes the loss

NEW YORK -- If there is such a thing as a feel-good loss, that applies to Jonathon Niese's outing on Sunday. Niese was on the hook for the New York Mets' 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds. But he pitched well and pain-free, which could be considered a victory in itself. In 5 2/3 innings, Niese gave up two runs on six hits -- all singles -- with four strikeouts and one walk. "I felt good," Niese said. "It felt like the ball was coming out of my hand pretty well.
