Pirates bullpen unravels, lose, 9-5, to Diamondbacks after hit batter

PHOENIX — When Joe Musgrove left the mound Monday night at Chase Field, he had a lead and some new enemies. Boos rang out from the fans at Chase Field after Musgrove had hit Chris Owings with the first pitch of the seventh inning. It certainly appeared to be in retaliation for the fact that Josh Harrison had been hit in the upper back, near his head, in the top of the inning. Cubs 3, Pirates 1: A Happ-enstance

Ian Happ made three amazing catches to help win this one. Normally, the phrase “Ian Happ’s outstanding defense” isn’t a phrase you would have expected used anywhere in a game recap here, much less leading off the game story. The Pirates lost a game they should have won Sunday because of a nightmarish ninth inning. It was especially painful because their most dependable players let them down. Felipe Vasquez blew a save. Jordy Mercer had a throwing error. Josh Harrison failed to cover first base in time on a bunt. The San Diego Padres scored four runs to win, 8-5, beating the Pirates for the third consecutive game.

Pirates come back late, then blow lead in 8-5 loss to Padres

For half an inning, it looked like the Pirates would avoid dropping a series at home to the last-place San Diego Padres. Austin Meadows helped fuel a comeback with his first major league home run. Josh Harrison, fresh off the disabled list, gave the Pirates a late lead.
