Maybe it really was John Mallee’s fault: Phillies 8, Padres 4

The good times continued for J.T. Realmuto and the Phillies offense | Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports J.T. Realmuto, Bryce Harper, and the Phillies’ offense continued to succeed in the post-Mallee world It’s possible that the Phillies’ offense was bound to get hot at some point, and it is merely coincidental that it happened as soon as former hitting coach John Mallee was fired. But where’s the fun in saying that? It’s much more exciting to credit the resurgence to the switch from Mallee to Charlie Manuel. Either way, the Phillies continued to hit well, and topped the Padres by...

Realmuto propels offense in Phillies win over Cubs

Before Tuesday's series opener with the Cubs, the top storyline involving the Phillies centered around the return of Charlie Manuel to the dugout as the club's new hitting coach. As if the 100-plus games weren't enough of an indication that a change was necessary, the Phils whiffed 15 times and finished Tuesday night 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.J.T. Realmuto provided just enough offense though, with a solo shot in the fifth and a go-ahead run-scoring double in the seventh, to propel the Phils to a much needed 4-2 victory over the Cubs at Citizens Bank Park.Jason Vargas...

Heather Barry - SB Nation MLB © Treasure some moments from a nice Phillies win. On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Phillies returned home from a tough road trip hoping to change their luck. Jason Vargas took the mound against the Chicago Cubs in the heat of a playoff chase. Vargas threw six innings, only giving up two runs in the process. He’d factor in as a no-decision, but he was able to get the ball to the bullpen in the seventh. The offense was paced by J.T. Realmuto, who homered in the fifth and had a clutch RBI double in the seventh that plated Andrew Knapp. Roman Quinn hit a clutch...

Strikeouts don’t matter: Phillies 4, Cubs 2

Jason Vargas wasn’t as dominant as his counterpart, but he was equally effective | Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports The Phillies overcame 15 strikeouts thanks to a big night from J.T. Realmuto On the day that the team fired its hitting coach, the Phillies’ lineup showed just why a change was made by striking out 15 times. However, they were able to overcome those strikeouts thanks to strong pitching and a big night from J.T. Realmuto. Cubs starter Jose Quintana was overpowering, striking out 14 batters in his six innings. That set a new record. Jose Quintana, with his 13th K, now has...

J.T. Realmuto, Jorge Alfaro, and how I think the Phillies teach better catcher framing

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports The Phillies know how to teach better pitch presentation. How are they doing it? J.T. Realmuto is one of the top defensive catchers in the game today. This is not something that we need to have a discussion about since it is a statistical fact. Using Baseball Prospectus’ numbers, we know this. Now before you begin to moan and howl and whine about Yasmani Grandal, let me stop you right there in your track. This is not what I am going to be talking about. We can save that conversation for another time. So, move on. Instead, what I want to...

Phillies: Could J.T. Realmuto be the one to carry team to playoffs?

J.T. Realmuto had a rather innocuous start to his Phillies career, but he may be the player who ultimately carries them to the playoffs. Thanks to their rough June, the Phillies went from leading the division to fighting for their playoff lives. With the trade deadline come and gone, it will mainly be up to […] Phillies: Could J.T. Real Nice: Phillies 10, Giants 2

J.T. Realmuto powered the Phillies to victory on Thursday | Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports A big day by J.T. Realmuto and the Phillies’ offense powered them to victory With no big name additions coming at the trade deadline, Phillies general manager Matt Klentak basically said that if the team was going to make the playoffs, it would be up to the players already on hand. On Thursday afternoon, those players made their general manager look good for one day at least, as the Phillies pounded Giants pitching en route to a 10-2 win. J.T. Realmuto was the biggest star on the day as his...

Game Thread 7/24: Well this is a weird one

Photo by Duane Burleson/ It’s time for round two of two at Comerica Park. Did you know that entering this series, Bryce Harper was a career .375 hitter at Comerica Park in Detroit? That was, of course, in only eight at-bats. But he did have a triple (still does, presumably). So, take that, Nick Castellanos—some people can hit there! Just kidding, it’s a ridiculous park and Castellanos was totally correct. Of course, Harper isn’t in the lineup today. And J.T. Realmuto is playing first base. So. Play ball, I guess! Here's our lineup for a Wednesday matinee in Detroit....
