Go ahead and grab Kelly Johnson

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Rays infielder Kelly Johnson got off to a slow start, leading many Fantasy owners resigned to the fact that his solid power was simply not worth the hit to his batting average. After another multi-hit game Wednesday, Johnson is now batting .283 on the season, and looking like a much more attractive Fantasy option. After his first 20 games, Johnson was batting just .193, and looking very much like the disappointing Fantasy option of the previous two seasons. In nine games since, Johnson has been absolutely on fire while sacrificing power for a better all-around approach at the plate. Johnson is...

Postgame Shot Of Joe: Bullpen (Finally) Comes Through

Rays Index — Joe is back with his postgame thoughts… Boy oh boy did the Rays need this. No, it wasn’t a boatload of offense (thought Kelly Johnson and James Loney did bring the sticks). No, it wasn’t starting pitcher (Matt Moore did that). It was a bullpen. Finally. Moore pitched strong. But [...]

Kelly Johnson proving surprisingly useful

CBSSports.com Fantasy — I'm not saying the Rays' Kelly Johnson is a top-10 second baseman, as so many of us predicted he'd be long ago, but he's shown he has something to offer to those who might have to dig a little deeper at a weak position. Over his last 16 games, he's batting .300 with three homers, a double, a triple and three steals, which suggests maybe he's not as bad as he's looked the last two years. Of course, given his track record, we know he could go cold at a moment's notice, but if I was desperate for something halfway useful at second base, I'd opt for Johnson over Yuniesky Betancourt, who the law of...

Rays vs. Rockies, game 1: Bullpen holds, bats comcome through in extras

DRaysBay — So this is what it's like to play in Colorado. There were four home runs hit (by Nolan Arenado, Michael Cuddyer, Desmond Jennings, and Kelly Johnson). On none of them was I sure off the bat that the ball was gone. But neither were any of them lucky, short blasts. And then there were other fly balls that looked well hit, and seemed to be carrying, but stayed in. The outfield is huge, and for the uninitiated fan, confusing. We like to make fun of the Fenway crowd for cheering warning track flyouts. I completely excuse such embarrassing behavior from the Coors Field faithful. Matt Moore d...

  • The Rays Tank: Question of Wil Myers' ETA Won't Go Away
Maybe the Rays lineup has finally turned a corner. After Desmond Jennings' leadoff homer in the first inning off of Jake Arrieta in the first inning on Tuesday, the Rays' bats disappeared for quite a while, but finally in the 8th they came alive, getting an opposite-field home run from Kelly Johnson and a 2-run shot from Evan Longoria to close within 5-4. That would be the final as the Rays lost to the Orioles, but maybe more promising hitting days are ahead. Whether that is true or not, having Wil Myers in the major leagues were certainly change everything. Jonah Keri of Grantland dis...
