Mariners Insider | Tacoma News-Tribune Mariners manager Eric Wedge has Raul Ibanez back in the line-up after hitting a home run last night. Kelly Shoppach is in tonight, so that means Jesus Montero will catch tomorrow’s day game. Otherwise it’s a pretty standard Mariners line-up. No, I don’t know when Nick Franklin will be called up. 05.11.13 SEA Notes by … Read more »

Mariners Insider | Tacoma News-Tribune Justin Smoak gets his first off day of the season. He’s been battling lower back and knee stiffness as he’s been playing the last week or so. Mariners manager Eric Wedge decided to go with both catchers in his line-up. That means if Kelly Shoppach were to get injured, the Mariners would lose the DH for the game if Montero had to replace him. “We needed to give Smoak a day and I wanted to catch Shoppach,” Wedge said. “So it was either him or one of the lefties to DH. I thought this was a good … Read more »
Seattle Mariners April 28, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy The entire Jesus Montero situation is very weird. He's on the wrong side of a timeshare with Kelly Shoppach, but has managed a .375 average in his last four games, all coming with a gap of one or two days in between. Usually when a player is taken out of regular playing time, he sees his numbers dip, as loses his rhythm; Montero has done the opposite. Meanwhile, Justin Smoak, who has an average about 30 points lower than Montero, isn't losing at-bats at first base (a position Montero has been almost-playing for three years). Montero hit .260 with 15 home runs in 515 at-bats last year. He stink...

Lookout Landing How do you solve a problem like Jesus Montero? The Mariners seem to be faced with that very question, and right now their solution has been to bench him. Kelly Shoppach has been hot at the plate and Montero's struggling. Shoppach has now gotten the start over Montero in three of the last four games, and last night's start even after a day off was particularly telling. Is this the abrupt end to trying Montero out as the team's full time catcher? Montero's defense has been terrible this season. He's had issues with catching the ball (generally a good skill for a catcher), he's yet to thr...
Seattle Mariners April 17, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy Mariners manager Eric Wedge plans to give catcher Kelly Shoppach more time behind the plate with Jesus Montero off to a slow start. Shoppach has hit .389/.476/.667 with one home run in 18 at-bats this season. “We’re going to mix-and-match with that for a while and hopefully keep Shopp going, but also help to get Jesus going,” Wedge told MLB.com. Montero has hit just .211/.211/.237 through 38 at-bats.

Bless You Boys If you missed the game last night (with some weak excuse like "sleep") you missed this gem from Kelly Shoppach via gifs.houseofthebluebird.com (Good job Matt - @Matt_HBB) Of course this drew instant comparisons to Denard Robinson's awful first pitch. I'd credit the person who made the joke, but it was the entire internet simultaneously. But life is not without moments of redemption. In true Tosh.0 style, Denard had a second chance at a U of M baseball game. How did he do? You would think a guy used to playing in front of 100,000 people wouldn't only be able to perform in front of a...

Seattle Mariners April 11, 2013Seattle Times Many of you have written in to me on Twitter asking why Mariners manager Eric Wedge opted to have catcher Kelly Shoppach bunt with two on and none out in yesterday’s fifth inning, but then opted not to pinch-hit for Raul Ibanez against a left-handed reliever with two on and one out in the sixt

April 6, 2013Mariners Insider | Tacoma News-Tribune Lots of Mariners talk on the radio today. So let’s start with the most important interview – me. I was on my normal Friday spot on KJR with Jason Puckett and Ian Furness. We talked about Brandon Maurer, Michael Morse, hitting, the cold weather, me forgetting a coat, I complained a little …. normal stuff. After the jump are podcasts of Kelly Shoppach on with Furness and Puckett and Brendan Ryan on with Bob and Groz. … Read more »

South Side Sox Offense: Michael Saunders-RF, Kyle Seager-3B, Kendrys Morales-DH, Michael Morse-LF, Justin Smoak-1B, Jesus Montero-C, Dustin Ackley-2B, Franklin Gutierrez-CF, Brendan Ryan-SS. Bench: Kelly Shoppach-C, Robert Andino-INF, Jason Bay-OF, Raul Ibanez-OF. It's still far too early in the season for me to be displaying runs per game from this year, so we fall back into the past and notice that the Seattle Mariners had the absolute worst offense in the American League last summer. Their 3.82 R/G represent the only team in the AL to finish below 4.0 R/G, finishing ahead of only the Cubs, Marlin...
