Cubs Blog | Chicago Breaking Sports Cubs failures point to difficulty, but they have trouble with final 9 outs, not just last 3ST. LOUIS — The Cubs went through Carlos Marmol, Kyuji Fujikawa and a closer-by-committee strategy the first two weeks of the season before rescuing Kevin Gregg from the scrap heap in mid-April and watching him succeed in his old role.
Chicago Cubs June 18, 2013Chicago Sun-Times NEW YORK – With closer Kevin Gregg unavailable after pitching four straight days, the Cubs went old school for the ninth inning on Sunday. And got old school results. In a matter of minutes, Carlos Marmol turned a three-hit Cubs shutout into a 4-3 loss to the New York Mets when former Cub Marlon Byrd hit an upper-deck homer to left leading off the ninth and four batters later Kirk Nieuwenhuis slammed the upper-deck façade with a three-run shot for the game winner. It snapped a three-game Cubs winning streak and ruined ...
Chicago Cubs June 16, 2013Orange County Register Right-hander Kevin Gregg returned last week to Anaheim, where it all started for him as an Angel in 2003. The much-traveled Gregg, 34, is in his second stint as the closer for the Chicago Cubs. He's 6-for-6 in save opportunities, didn't allow an...
Los Angeles Angels June 9, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy Cubs closer Kevin Gregg secured a two-out save Tuesday night against the Cardinals. Gregg worked his way around a base hit as he forced a double play to end the game and close out a 4-2 win. He has not surrendered a run in his last 5 2/3 innings. He has converted all 10 of his save chances.
June 5, 2013Chicago Sun-Times During the long process of getting the final out in the Cubs’ 8-3 victory over the White Sox on Thursday, Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts stood with arms folded, watching closer Kevin Gregg battle. Then came the grounder for the out. Applause from the chairman. And the presentation of the shiny, silver Crosstown Cup. For whatever that’s worth. (Apparently not enough to attract a sponsor this time around.) The Cubs swept the three games against the Sox that didn’t get rained out, which is great for morale and gives them a se...
Chicago Cubs May 30, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy With news of Kyuji Fujikawa's Tommy John surgery, the Cubs are now faced with the prospect of having Carlos Marmol as their backup closer to Kevin Gregg. While Marmol has a 4.26 ERA and 1.63 WHIP on the season, he has been very good lately, with a 1.80 ERA in his last five games, including six strikeouts and a 1.00 WHIP. And even if those recent numbers weren't sterling, Marmol benefits from simply being the next in line. In a deeper league, it might be worth it to throw caution to the wind (while clinging strictly to logic) and grab Marmol as a backup closer option.
May 29, 2013Chicago Cubs Blog | ESPN Chicago CHICAGO -– Don’t count one of the Chicago Cubs' best potential trade pieces as being on board for leaving the team anytime soon. Closer Kevin Gregg doesn’t want to talk about trade deadlines -- at least not until he knows the Cubs are out of it. “I almost look at it as a little disrespectful to the guys on the team that are here because this is a good product,” Gregg said before the Cubs played the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.

Gregg, who was picked up off waivers for his second stint with the Cubs, is 6 for 6 in save opportunities going into Friday's game. He answers your questions: What would you say is the biggest adjustment you've made between your two stints with the Cubs? -- Topher (Bourbonnais, Ill.) Chicago Cubs May 21, 2013Chicago Sun-Times The Cubs are starting games off with a surprisingly strong rotation that figures to get even better with right-hander Matt Garza’s return Tuesday. And they are finishing games off better since the unexpected return of Kevin Gregg. After shuffling the closer role among Carlos Marmol, Kyuji Fujikawa and a committee of others, manager Dale Sveum seems to have found his go-to man. ‘‘[Gregg] has been perfect [in six save opportunities],’’ Sveum said. ‘‘He’s a guy who’s been in that situation many times in his career, and he...

Chicago Cubs May 20, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy I've been doubtful of Kevin Gregg's ability to hold down the Cubs' closer job, but to be fair, he's done nothing in his 10 appearances to lose the faith of the Fantasy owners who claimed him. Gregg has yet to allow a run, and he has 12 strikeouts over 9 1/3 innings. If you're a Kyuji Fujikawa owner, though, don't drop the closer-in-waiting just yet. Gregg has faced only 34 batters so far, and there's plenty of statistical wackiness that can occur in such a small sample. Gregg is throwing only 60 percent of his pitches for strikes, and he has a lengthy track record that speaks to his command is...
May 13, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy Cubs reliever Kevin Gregg has scrapped his cut fastball this year. Gregg has been a huge surprise with the Cubs. Through 9 1/3 innings, Gregg has yet to allow a run and already has six saves. The cutter hasn't been a great pitch for him in the past, but he used it close to 25 percent of the time the last three seasons. Gregg is throwing his fastball more often as a result. Over his career, Gregg's fastball has a 6.9 pitch value according to FanGraphs.com, making it his best offering. Gregg has been able to pitch effectively this year, and has played his way into the Cubs' closer role. Given t...
May 13, 2013CBSSports.com Fantasy Cubs pitcher James Russell earned the win with a scoreless relief inning Sunday against Washington. Russell has settled in as Kevin Gregg's setup man and has a 0.63 ERA to go with his first win. Even with a walk Sunday he has a 5.3 K/BB ratio and has been one of the best non-closer relievers this season.
