Mets Morning News: Matz no match for Nats bats

Your Friday morning dose of New York Mets and MLB news, notes, and links. Meet the Mets Steven Matz limited the Nationals to three runs over 6.1 innings but got outdueled by Max Scherzer en route to a 5-4 defeat at Citi Field on Thursday night. Asdrubal Cabrera, Jose Bautista, and Kevin Plawecki homered and collected two hits apiece. In frustratingly typical fashion, Anthony Rendon killed the Mets, homering twice and collecting a third hit for three RBI. Jerry Blevins surrendered a two-run homer to Bryce Harper in the seventh that’d prove to be the difference. Choose your recap:...

The Mets should consider signing Devin Mesoraco beyond 2018

The Mets should consider signing Devin Mesoraco beyond 2018

Mesoraco has provided much needed stability to the catching position for the Mets. On the same day in mid-April, news surfaced that Kevin Plawecki broke his hand and Travis d’Arnaud would need season-ending Tommy John surgery. Suddenly, what was considered a position of relative strength on the Mets’ roster became a weakness in very short order. The Mets saw far too many plate appearances from Jose Lobaton and Tomas Nido before trading Matt Harvey for Devin Mesoraco in early May. One could argue the trade has worked out quite well for both clubs. Harvey has a 3.79 ERA since joining...

Final Score: Mets 5, Marlins 2 — Fished In!

The Mets escape South Beach with a win. The Mets won the series finale in Miami this afternoon, defeating the Marlins 5-2. After an absolutely abysmal June, the Mets turned the page on a new month, and secured a win behind a solid pitching performance by their home-grown lefty. Kevin Plawecki drove in the first run of the game with a double to center field in the second inning, plating Todd Frazier. One inning later, Asdrubal Cabrera hit a solo home run to put the Mets up 2-0. Steven Matz started for the Mets, and went five and a third innings, only surrendering one run that, partially,...

Final Score: Dodgers 8, Mets 7 — Hello (Starter) Jerry

This back and forth game was truly something. The Mets lost in extra innings to the Dodgers today at Citi Field, 8-7. The team, swept at home, has now lost six straight games. The game was a back and forth affair, almost to a comical degree. The Mets’ relief corps was on the mound for the entire game, due to the injury to Jason Vargas. The first four pitchers - Jerry Blevins, Tim Peterson, Chris Beck, and Anthony Swarzak - each gave up a solo home run and then some. The Mets got four runs batted in by Kevin Plawecki, including a game tying three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth...

Mets Morning News for June 22, 2018

Your Friday morning dose of New York Mets and MLB news, notes, and links. Meet the Mets The Mets hit into five double plays on Thursday afternoon, including three started by Nolan Arenado, and a late-game comeback fell short as the squad fell 6-4 to the Rockies. Steven Matz got touched up early, surrendering a three-run shot to Arenado before recording an out, then giving up a two-run double to the third baseman in the second. But the lefty settled in, getting the next 12 outs without letting another opponent cross the plate. Todd Frazier, Michael Conforto, Kevin Plawecki, and Dom Smith,...
