Cubs 5, Diamondbacks 1: The Kyle Hendricks show

The Cubs righthander continued his second-half success, and the offense came alive. Even while Cubs hitters have struggled as the team reaches the end of its 30-day slog through three time zones, Cubs pitchers have put together outstanding outings. One of the best of those happened Monday night in Phoenix, as Kyle Hendricks held the Diamondbacks to one hit through eight innings before allowing a solo home run and single in the ninth. He was removed to a loud ovation from the large contingent of Cubs fans with two out in the ninth after his best start of 2018. The timing couldn’t have been...

2018 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 147

2018 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 147

Cubs win second straight with 3-2 come from behind win I root a lot for the guys who aren’t necessarily the biggest stars on the team. The Cubs win largely because of the excellence and production of Javier Baez, Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Jon Lester, Jose Quintana, Kyle Hendricks and Cole Hamels. They get a lot of support from the core bullpen members (or at least they did until all of those guys became either hurt or worn out). So today, I’m going to be a little bit chipper while writing. The Cubs three Heroes of the day will consist of a guy who I know more Cub fans than not cringe...

Chicago Cubs: “They’re definitely coming for us”

As the season’s end draws more and more near, the Chicago Cubs are beginning to find themselves on more tenuous footing in the NL Central. “They’re definitely coming for us. We can feel it.” This is what Chicago Cubs losing pitcher Kyle Hendricks said after Wednesday night’s loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. It was a […] Chicago Cubs: “They’re definitely coming for us” - Call to the Pen - Call to the Pen - A Major League Baseball Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Chicago Cubs vs. Washington Nationals preview, Thursday 9/6, 6:05 CT

The Nationals have struggled recently, but are still a formidable opponent. Sigh. Here we go again with chances of rain tonight (and Friday and the weekend are worse forecasts), so here’s your DC-area radar to keep handy. Thursday notes: The Cubs’ win Wednesday was their 82nd of the year, guaranteeing them a winning season, their fourth straight. That’s the longest such streak for the Cubs franchise since a six-year run from 1967-72. The Cubs reached 82 wins in Game 139 on September 5. Last year, the Cubs reached 82 wins in Game 148 on September 16. Kyle Hendricks has gone 5-2 with...

Chicago Cubs: September is make-or-break time for Jose Quintana

After a tumultuous first full season with the Chicago Cubs, Jose Quintana’s performance in September could be definitive for his success in the postseason. Between injuries to Yu Darvish and the struggles experienced by Tyler Chatwood and Kyle Hendricks, Chicago Cubs starters have trended like a bell curve all year. While nearly every arm on […] Chicago Cubs: September is make-or-break time for Jose Quintana - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - A Chicago Cubs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Cubs 7, Phillies 1: Back on track

Cubs 7, Phillies 1: Back on track

The Cubs’ offense came alive and the pitching was sold. What more could you ask? The Cubs quickly put to rest Saturday any thoughts that they’d hit a solo home run and have no other runs. Two doubles, a single and a throwing error led to two first-inning runs, and it turned out that’s all they would need in this game, as Kyle Hendricks and two relievers limited the Phillies to just six hits in a 7-1 Cubs victory that evened up this three-game series. Daniel Murphy led off the game with a double and then Javier Baez hit a soft grounder to shortstop. Phillies shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera...

Kyle Hendricks has been a big success for the Cubs, but what comes next for Cubs pitching?

Kyle Hendricks has been a big success for the Cubs, but what comes next for Cubs pitching?

The Cubs will soon have to begin developing their own starting pitching. As I assess the Cubs pitching future, my opinions will be far different from the opinions of the traditional Cubs fans’ opinions. I see two main reasons for that. I see current Cubs players as short-term answers. They fill needs, likely, until their contracts lapse. Perhaps they sign extensions. Perhaps not. Beyond those players, the options I consider are, generally, the ones already under contract. Many consider “the next” to be Jacob deGrom, or whoever. I see deGrom as another team’s option, until that...

Cubs 9, Reds 0: Sweep!

Cubs 9, Reds 0: Sweep!

The Cubs put great pitching and solid offense together for their fifth straight win. These are the Cubs we’ve been waiting for, for nearly the entire 2018 season. Outstanding pitching from Kyle Hendricks. A varied offense that included hitting with RISP and home runs, and taking advantage of the other team’s errors. All that added up to a 9-0, three-hit shutout win over the Reds, sweeping the series and giving the Cubs a five-game winning streak. Hendricks got through the top of the first 1-2-3 on 13 pitches and then the offense got to work. Daniel Murphy led off with a single, and then...

Reds at Cubs, Game Four - Preview and Lineups

Ugh. So this weekend trip to Chicago has gone about as well as expected. Kyle Hendricks will pitch in this one for the Cubs. He’s not been as good this season, or at least it hasn’t been reflected in his line. His K/9 is down to 7.5 while his WHIP is up to 1.240. Both would be career worsts for the RHP for a full season. That said, he’s given up three or fewer earned runs in 20 of his 26 starts, so the 28 year old hasn’t exactly been a gas can. The 107 ERA+ would be a welcome sight in the Reds rotation, for sure. The Cubs are on a bit different course than the Reds, though. The...
