Bumgarner's velocity is still down

McCovey Chronicles — More photos » Jeff Chiu - AP Fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff Browse more photos » Bumgarner was clocked at 94 mph last spring, when he struck out the Dodgers' Manny Ramirez. But his velocity dropped into the high 80s by June, and he hasn't recaptured the crackle on his fastball this spring. From Andrew Baggarly this morning. It’s far too early in the spring to jump to conclusions, so we should just remain calm. There’s no reason to...   Yeah. Pretty much. I don’t care if Bumgarn...

Stop Shark Finning, Dammit

Sons of Steve Garvey — Just this Son's opinion: I was disappointed to read that Manny Ramirez enjoyed some shark's fin soup while in Taiwan. While shark's fin soup is a traditional Chinese dish and, yes, it is tasty, it's not difficult to give up once you see how it's made. Basically they cut the fins off and throw the rest of the shark back in the ocean. From Stop Shark Finning: Every year tens of millions of sharks die a slow death because of finning. Finning is the inhumane practice of hacking off the shark's fins and throwing its still living body back into the sea. The sharks either starve to death, are ...

Thank you for coming to Taiwan, Manny - here's $170,000

Dodgers Thoughts | ESPN Los Angeles — Given that the Dodgers left it up to their players to decide whether they wanted to go to Taiwan, if this Focus Taiwan report that Manny Ramirez accepted a $170,000 appearance fee from the promoters of the exhibition series in Taiwan is true, I don't really see a problem. But I expect others will, just because they find a problem lately with everything Ramirez does. (Link via Dodger Thoughts commenter BHSportsguy). Honestly, whether you wanted to go to Taiwan because you wanted to see the country, or you wanted to play in a foreign ballpark, or you wanted to see some friends back in your home...

Rock Stars

Sons of Steve Garvey — From @DodgertownUSA: Angel Berroa, Ronnie Belliard and Manny Ramirez make friends on the flight to Taiwan. That's right, Angel Berroa is wearing sunglasses on a commercial airline flight. UPDATE: From @Dodgers: After a 15-hour flight, a daisy-fresh Joe Torre meets the Taiwanese press.

A final tug for Garciaparra

Boston Globe — Farewells have not come easily for the Red Sox in recent seasons, the departures of Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez, Johnny Damon, and other notable players tinged with far more rancor than nostalgia.

Dodgers' Matt Kemp is up front about advantages of batting second

Los Angeles Times — The Dodgers center fielder, who hit seventh on opening day last year, likes batting in the No. 2 spot in front of Andre Ethier and Manny Ramirez. Unlike a certain someone who refused to admit a couple of years ago that hitting in front of Manny Ramirez made a difference, Matt Kemp had no problem saying that he would likely benefit from his new place in the lineup.

  • Rooster crows after Dodgers' overseas defeat Dodgers Thoughts | ESPN Los Angeles Good morning, and welcome to the postgame show! Yes, the Dodgers' first game in Taiwan is already over, and it sounds like the Tianmu Baseball Stadium crowd had a good time. Native son Chin-Lung Hu had a two-run single for the Dodgers, but Taiwan's Chinese Professional Baseball League All-Stars won, 5-2. Sounds like it's been a good trip all around, though: Here's a travelogue describing all the activities before the first game, from Josh Rawitch at Inside the Dodgers. Ken Gurnick also has an article at MLB.com describing the Dodgers' sightseeing. Here's a game story from Focus Taiwan. The ...
  • Eric Gagne bucking some bad history in his bid to make successful return to Dodgers Dodgers Blog | Los Angeles Times Eric Gagne has had a rough couple of early outings this spring in his bid to make a successful comeback with the Dodgers. And, history says, he’s bucking some tough odds to pull it off. No Dodger that I can find has ever had an early career of significance with the team and then returned later and been even close to the same player. Several players have come back around, but few successfully. Two of the greatest Dodgers pitchers of all time -- Don Sutton and Orel Hershiser -- came back to make last stands. Both were released by midseason....
