The Yankees bullpen was as good as advertised in the postseason

The Yankees bullpen was as good as advertised in the postseason

Which makes Aaron Boone’s lack of urgency just a little bit more frustrating. When the Yankees entered the playoffs, their strategy seemed pretty clear: they would deploy their historic bullpen early and often. While each of their starters, Luis Severino, J.A. Happ, Masahiro Tanaka, and CC Sabathia, actually turned in quite good seasons, the Yankees’ best chance to advance past the 108-win Red Sox was to leverage their elite relievers at every turn. Manager Aaron Boone even demonstrated a pretty firm grasp of how to use his deep relief corps earlier in the playoffs. He pulled Happ just...

The Yankees should now be the favorites to defeat the Red Sox in the ALDS

The Yankees secured a split in Boston. How strong is their position at this point? The Yankees dropped a heart-breaker in game one versus the Red Sox, but they bounced back with a resounding victory in game two. Aaron Judge set the tone with a first-inning home run off David Price, and Masahiro Tanaka held Boston in check in a game that followed a similar script to the Yankees’ Wild Card Game triumph over the Athletics. With the win in Boston, the Yankees became the first road team to emerge victorious in any of the divisional series, and evened the ALDS at 1-1. They showed last season...

Yankees smack Price, Sox to even series

Subtitle: Sanchez hits two home runs for New YorkRole reversal day should have favored the Red Sox.Instead, the Yankees are returning home to the Bronx with a split in the teams’ American League Division Series.New York pounded David Price and chased the beleaguered Sox starter after 1⅔ innings, scoring three runs early. They added three more on a Gary Sanchez blast off starter-turned-reliever Eduardo Rodriquez in the top of the seventh to pad the lead, and Masahiro Tanaka and a parade of relievers were good enough to keep the Sox at bay the rest of the way in a 6-2 win.The Yankees win...

ALDS Game Two: Yankees vs. Red Sox: Masahiro Tanaka vs. David Price

Game One went to the Sox, but the Yankees are in a good position to steal home field advantage Game One of the American League Division Series didn’t go the Yankees’ way. Chris Sale dominated, and the offense dropped the ball in crucial situations. But today is a new day, and the Yankees find themselves in a situation where they can still take a game off of the Red Sox in Fenway and head back to New York with the series tied. Game Two features what is probably the most Yankees-favored pitching matchup we’ll see in this series, with Masahiro Tanaka going up against David...

ALDS Day 2 Open Thread

Houston and Boston lead their respective series 1-0 It may be the era of the bullpen but don’t tell the AL teams competing in the ALDS, today. In Houston Carlos Carrasco will take on Gerrit Cole while the Yankees’ Masahiro Tanaka will face off against David Price in Boston. The highest ERA among those four pitchers is Tanaka’s 3.75. Cole’s ERA is actually at 2.88 which is just astounding to someone who grew up with baseball in the late 90’s and early 00’s. Houston and Cleveland face off in the day game which starts at 3:37 CDT. The northeast rivalry series will continue in prime...

Luis Severino, Aaron Boone drop ball and other takeaways in Yankees' Game 3 ALDS loss

The Yankees chose Severino to start the wild card game over J.A. Happ and Masahiro Tanaka in part because his specific stuff played best against the Oakland lineup.

The Yankees played to their best game, and that’s why they won the Wild Card Game

The Yankees played to their best game, and that’s why they won the Wild Card Game

In the simplest terms, the Yankees did everything well last night, and that’s why they’re still playing this season. I’m a little torn about last night’s game. On one hand, the Yankees won because it was a quintessential performance from the 2018 Yankees — patient but powerful hitting, a strong bullpen, and an edge-of-your-seat, sweat-inducing performance from Luis Severino. However, the Wild Card Game also felt like the Yankees set out to prove all the critics wrong. Severino didn’t allow a run after people spent weeks calling for J.A. Happ or Masahiro Tanaka to take the ball....

Happ and Masahiro Tanaka.A 24-year-old right-hander, Severino was 19-8 with a 3.39 ERA and 220 strikeouts. The Yankees’ defense might cost them a deep playoff run

The Yankees’ defense might cost them a deep playoff run

The Yankees’ offense and strikeout-heavy pitching can’t always paper over their defensive weaknesses. One of the cruelest things about baseball is that it lets you dream. I dreamed of denying the Red Sox the pleasure of clinching the AL East at Yankee Stadium, and the Yankees did their darnedest to make that dream a reality, winning the first two games of the series. Game three began inauspiciously, with Masahiro Tanaka having his first rough start in a while, but when Giancarlo Stanton hit his go-ahead grand slam in the fourth, I honestly thought that the Yankees had the sweep in the...

NYY news: The Wild Card debate rages on

The Wild Card starter debate continues; Ken Singleton talks about why he returned for 2019; Chapman’s return was less than ideal; Documentary on the 1978 tiebreaker takes lighter, comedic perspective ESPN | Coley Harvey: Heading into their series finale against the Red Sox, momentum was on Masahiro Tanaka’s side to start the Wild Card Game. Tanaka had been on a tear in the second half, and many of the arms that the Yankees have relied on have gone through slumps since. Unfortunately, Tanaka managed to further increase the debate by getting hit hard against the Sox, resurfacing the...
