Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 5: Michael Chavis hits the game-winner in a rollercoaster game

Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 5: Michael Chavis hits the game-winner in a rollercoaster game

I’ve re-written this headline and sub-header about five times now and I’m done. Well this was a wild one. The first two games of this series in Toronto were blowouts, with each team grabbing one win. This was a close affair, though, with the Red Sox having leads for most of the evening but never really getting to pull away. They did have some chances to expand on their leads, but couldn’t take advantage. Meanwhile, Rick Porcello was fantastic but was pulled after just six innings and 80 pitches, leaving it up to the bullpen. Brandon Workman, Matt Barnes and Marcus Walden have been...

Daily Red Sox Links: Jackie Bradley Jr., Matt Barnes, Chris Sale

In today’s links, Jackie Bradley Jr. is working on his hitting, Matt Barnes is the star of the bullpen and Chris Sale hasn’t been fully healthy this season. Jackie Bradley Jr. is in a familiar situation in terms of his offense. (Alex Speier; Boston Globe) We all know Matt Barnes has been getting outs effectively this season but what has been the key? (John Tomase; NBC Sports Boston) Even Chris Sale can’t be an ace when he’s not 100 percent. (Alex Reimer; WEEI) Speaking of injuries to starting pitchers, we’ve got an update on Nathan Eovaldi. (Keegan Matheson; MLB.com) Until he...

Matt Barnes is the reason this bullpen has worked so far

Matt Barnes is the reason this bullpen has worked so far

He’s absolutely ridiculous. Coming into the reason, the Red Sox bullpen was supposed to be the downfall of this roster if such a thing existed. In all of the scenarios in which Boston failed to live up to expectations, the majority of them included the bullpen blowing a whole lot of should-be wins. Instead, they’ve been perhaps the strongest and most consistent unit on the roster. Granted, we’ve seen cracks lately and some of the reasons people were so worried before the year, but overall they’ve been fantastic. They are in the top ten in all of baseball in both ERA and FIP as of...

Daily Red Sox Links: Michael Chavis, Matt Barnes, Koji Uehara

Ultimately Sunday’s win was just a victory in the middle of May, but it felt more important than that. (Chad Finn; Boston.com) This past weekend’s series was, it at least could be argued, a measuring stick for a Red Sox team that is still trying to reach its final form. (Jen McCaffrey; The Athletic) ($$) Once upon a time, Matt Barnes, Brandon Workman and Ryan Pressly were all part of the same minor-league rotation. Now, they are all having big-time success in the majors by moving away from their fastball. (Alex Speier; Boston Globe) Michael Chavis may have found a new good luck charm....

Daily Red Sox Links: J.D. Martinez, Matt Barnes, Steve Pearce

Remember when Happy Gilmore learned how to putt? That’s like when J.D. Martinez starts to heat up for the Red Sox. (Alex Speier; Boston Globe) With what we’re seeing from Martinez now, we’re being reminded of how important he is to this team. John Tomase argues it’s time to address his future here. (John Tomase; NBC Sports Boston) Matt Barnes hasn’t been perfect this year and will give up runs here and there, but even when that happens Alex Cora is still using his best reliever the right way. (Sean McAdam; Boston Sports Journal) ($$) Marcus Walden has emerged as the team’s...

Red Sox 6, Rockies 5: Michael Chavis walks it off

Red Sox 6, Rockies 5: Michael Chavis walks it off

With a single, not a home run, but we’ll take it. This was certainly a baseball game. For a bit, it seemed like it was going to be a repeat of Tuesday’s game. The Red Sox jumped out to an early lead on Wednesday scoring five runs in the first three innings against Rockies pitcher German Márquez. Meanwhile, Eduardo Rodriguez looked good for most of his start, with just a brief hiccup in the fourth. Then, for some reason, he was brought back out for the seventh with 99 pitches under his belt. That did not go well, and he and Matt Barnes combined to tie the game. Boston’s offense, which...

Daily Red Sox Links: Chris Sale, Michael Chavis, J.D. Martinez

In today’s links, Chris Sale makes adjustments, Michael Chavis could play a new position and J.D. Martinez seeks advice. Chris Sale is back to his ace-like form and the signs that he would get there were present before he tossed an absolute gem on Wednesday night. (Alex Speier; Boston Globe) Alex Cora is aware that Michael Chavis needs to be in the lineup by any means necessary. (Ryan Hannable; WEEI) Even though he is an All Star, J.D. Martinez can still learn from his father. (Alex Speier; Boston Globe) The Red Sox may have some inconsistencies in the bullpen, but Matt Barnes has been...
