Jake Smolinski needs surgery, Oakland A’s outfield competition narrows

Oakland A’s outfielder Jake Smolinski will have shoulder surgery on Friday, reports Susan Slusser of the S.F. Chronicle. Slusser goes on to mention that there is “no timetable for Smolinski’s return.” Smolinski was competing for a role in Oakland’s thin outfield. The A’s have Khris and Rajai Davis holding down two full-time spots, but RF Matt Joyce will need a right-handed platoon partner to pair with, and Smolinski was a top candidate for that job due to his mammoth splits against lefty pitching. With Smolinski out of the picture, Mark Canha figures to be a lock now for that...

What should the Oakland A’s lineup look like in 2017?

What should the Oakland A’s lineup look like in 2017?

Or distractions from Sonny Gray’s injury. Big number nerds will tell ya, lineup order doesn’t matter all that much. And they’re right. And that’s probably doubly true when you’re counting on Jed Lowrie to both hit and field for your team but you know what? We’re gonna talk about the A’s lineup. A team of platoons will naturally yield two different lineups, and the A’s will probably yield dozens more. They like to try weird things and the roster is often in flux. Vs. Righties 1. Matt Joyce, RF Joyce is an on-base machine, and with a newly refined swing, he’s going to hit...

Matt Joyce leads off a fine offensive day for A’s

On days Rajai Davis is getting a rest, Bob Melvin needs a leadoff man, so Thursday at Hohokam Stadium, he had new right fielder Matt Joyce atop the lineup, with Jed Lowrie batting second. Joyce opened the A’s four run-first with a base hit and opened their five-run second inning with a walk - and walked again later that inning. Joyce, who put up a .403 on-base percentage last year with the Pirates, is happy to hit wherever Melvin puts him but does find some drawbacks to leading off. The A’s were at the bottom of the league in on-base percentage last season. Lowre’s return after...

Dad’s ‘tough love’ molded A’s Matt Joyce into big-leaguer

Dad’s ‘tough love’ molded A’s Matt Joyce into big-leaguer MESA, Ariz. — Matt Joyce’s dad, also named Matt, tried all kinds of ways to motivate his son as a youngster in the Tampa, Fla., area. Dad would create little competitions — he’d park his truck behind the outfield wall during games and tell the younger Matt he’d pay him $100 if he hit the truck. The first time Joyce’s father did so, Joyce parked a home right into the bed of truck in his first at-bat. More often, though, the elder Joyce could be heard yelling at his son, including the time he hollered,...

Notes: Joyce might settle in as A's No. 3 hitter

MESA, Ariz. Though the As batting order is changing daily during the early exhibitions, one constant is emerging.Matt Joyce seems to be manager Bob Melvins early choice as a No. 3 hitter when hes in the lineup.
