Wire Taps: Nats & Dodgers try to play a doubleheader today after rainout; Wieters’ surgery + more...

Another day’s worth of Nationals news after another day without baseball, but the Nats and Dodgers are going to try to play again and attempt to play a doubleheader today... Just don’t look at the forecast for this afternoon. Just. Don’t. Do. It. They’re going to play two games today. There will be a doubleheader. Say it with me: There will be a doubleheader. If there isn’t, we’re going to start turning this site into one which does nothing but advocate for some streaming service or tv station out there to pick up Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency for a third season, at...

Washington Nationals’ catching situation: Pedro Severino time in D.C.; Will Nats add new catcher?

Pedro Severino should get the bulk of the starts behind the plate in D.C. with Matt Wieters recovering from surgery, but will the Nationals have to look for catching help? Pedro Severino is going to see plenty of time behind the plate now that Matt Wieters had surgery on his left hamstring, so it’s a good thing the 24-year-old catcher has had time to familiarize himself with the Washington Nationals’ pitching staff. “This is [Severino’s] opportunity to show the world how good he is. I love pitching to him. - Max Scherzer on Pedro Severino “He’s going to be our starting catcher...

Nationals announce Matt Wieters underwent hamstring surgery; no timetable issued for return

The Washington Nationals will be without their starting catcher for the foreseeable future after Matt Wieters went under the knife Thursday. Six days after hitting the disabled list with an apparent leg injury, Washington Nationals catcher Matt Wieters underwent surgery on his left hamstring, according to a team press release. More information will be available when he returns to the Washington, D.C., area, according to the Nationals, so Wieters will likely have to meet with team doctors before he’s given an estimate for the duration of his recovery. Wieters suffered the injury rounding...

Catch up on the last 24 hours in Nationals news before the start of the 3rd of 4 with the Diamondbacks in Chase Field. With Matt Wieters on the 10-Day DL, and waiting for the swelling to go down in his left leg so they can fully assess the damage, Pedro Severino is going to get significant starts over the next few weeks, and Nats’ skipper Davey Martinez said he needs the 24-year-old to do more of what he’s done so far this season. “I just want him to continue to do what he’s been doing. I mean, he’s been awesome,” the first-year skipper said. “I know he shares time with...

Washington Nationals place Matt Wieters on 10-Day DL; bring Spencer Kieboom up from Triple-A...

Matt Wieters lands on the 10-Day DL with a hamstring strain. Spencer Kieboom comes up from Triple-A. Adam Eaton goes on 60-Day DL. Washington Nationals’ skipper Davey Martinez told reporters last night that catcher Matt Wieters would have an MRI on his left leg after he injured it on the way to first while running out a single in the series opener in Arizona, but before they knew the extent of the damage to Wieters’ hamstring Martinez said they would need to bring another catcher up. He wasn’t interested in diagnosing what went wrong for Wieters on the trip from home to first base....

The Pirates' best defender so far? Corey Dickerson.

Chad Kuhl had Matt Wieters 0-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning on May 1. The switch-hitting Washington Nationals catcher went with the pitch, a fastball up and away, and lined it in front of Corey Dickerson in left field.

The Nationals need to find a backup catcher for tomorrow’s game after Matt Wieters injured himself in the series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Washington Nationals’ catcher Matt Wieters found a hole in the Arizona D-backs’ defensive shift, and singled to center field with one out in the second inning of what ended up a 2-1 win for the Nationals last night in Chase Field. “It was a weird thing. But it stinks, because he was playing so well, and he’s a big part of our success and what we do.” - Davey Martinez on Matt Wieters’ injured knee Wieters took an awkward step...

Sure, I definitely feel like talking about that trash inning Hector Neris threw on Sunday

What else could you possibly want to do after such a dumb loss than zero in on the specific dumbness of it? It’s easy to assign the climax of yesterday’s ninth inning to any particular moment: The hit batter. The first free pass. The walked-in run. My personal favorite is the one that started it all: Matt Wieters’ at-bat. Wieters, who led off the inning for the Nationals, was a huge candidate to record an out to start the frame. Instead, he pecked a Hector Neris offering to second base and managed to scramble down the line safely. Now, a catcher with low foot speed and a weak...

Washington and San Francisco play the second game of their three-game set in AT&T Park at 10:15 PM EDT tonight. Down 2-1 in the sixth last night, the Washington Nationals had a chance to respond when San Francisco’s third baseman, Evan Longoria dropped a foul pop down the left field line from Bryce Harper, who eventually took a one-out walk and Andrew McCutchen missed a liner to right off Ryan Zimmerman’s bat. Matt Adams K’d swinging in the next at bat, however, and Matt Wieters sent a fly ball out to center for the final out of the inning. “That was a big turning point in the...
