The Daily Chop: Each team’s best defender, Max Fried and more

Maximizing Max Fried

Photo by Carmen Mandato/ What Max Fried needs to do to have a breakout 2020 season Max Fried broke into the starting rotation in full in 2019, with an up and down season. Despite the highs and lows of his season, he was a productive player, pitching 165.2 innings on a 4.02 ERA and posting a good 3 WAR season. Looking at his other stats paints a picture of a player due for some positive regression, as Fried had a FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) of 3.72 and an xFIP of 3.32. On top of these numbers, he put up a highly impressive 9.4K/9 and lowered his walk rate to a solid 2.55BB/9, both...

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports While there are not as many Top 100 guys down in the minors, the Braves still have a strong crop of minor league talent. It is really hard for any team to consistently have seven plus guys who are legitimate Top 100 prospects, so for the last few years, fans of the Braves’ farm system have been spoiled to have such a wealth of talent on the way. However, that depth has taken hits in recent years. Mostly, it has been due to the loss of prospect status as young players like Ozzie Albies, Ronald Acuna Jr., Mike Soroka, Max Fried, Austin Riley, etc. are...
