Reviewing Astros Trades 2014-2018: Part II, The Gomez Trade. (w/ 2015 comment thread)

Second part in the what if series on the history of recent Astros trades. Today the 2015 trade with the Brewers for Carlos Gomez and Mike Fiers. Introduction This is Part II of a continuing series on the history and analysis of recent Astros trades. Part I is here, which includes a discussion of methodology and caveats. Mainly the grading is based on how the trades actually turned out, realizing that trades are based on the best information available at the time of the trade, that trades are based on probable outcomes, but like all gambles the hoped for outcomes do not always occur. Today...

The A's have scheduled their 2019 FanFest for Saturday Jan. 26 at Jack London Square, a hop, skip and a Khris Davis homer away from their proposed Howard Terminal ballpark site. Twenty players, including Gold Glove first baseman Matt Olson, and pitchers Mike Fiers and Sean Manaea, will attend, as well as old-timers Vida Blue, Rollie Fingers, Bip Roberts and Dave Stewart. The event, which runs from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., is free and features 10 food trucks giving away their treats, the popular question-and-answer sessions with players and management and a Ballpark Experience area where fans...

Oakland Athletics should join the Yusei Kikuchi sweepstakes

The Oakland Athletics need another starting pitcher, and Japanese lefty Yusei Kikuchi would be an off-kilter but exciting addition.  It was no secret that the Oakland Athletics‘ biggest need heading into the offseason was starting pitching. That fact hasn’t changed much, even after recently re-signing Mike Fiers to a two-year deal. And while the A’s project to […] Oakland Athletics should join the Yusei Kikuchi sweepstakes - Golden Gate Sports - Golden Gate Sports - A Bay Area Sports Site

With Mike Fiers deal official, A’s seek more rotation parts

The A’s announced their two-year contract with starting pitcher Mike Fiers on Monday, and much more rotation news is anticipated before pitchers and catchers report to spring training in February. The news probably will come later rather than sooner. “I think given our situation, waiting it out is probably the way we’re going to look at it,” said executive vice president of baseball operations Billy Beane, whose club opened last season with the majors’ lowest payroll but added significant parts as the season progressed. “We have to be opportunistic and patient.” In the wake of...

Free agent right-hander Mike Fiers has agreed to a two-year contract to stay with the Oakland Athletics, who were determined to find an experienced starter this offseason to help lead a young rotation.

Oakland Athletics smartly re-signed Mike Fiers to two-year deal

The Hot Stove baseball world is starting to make some sense again as the Oakland Athletics re-signed the veteran pitched to a two-year contract. Mike Fiers was traded to the Oakland Athletics in 2018 after spending the first half of the season with the Detroit Tigers. Oddly, the A’s non-tendered Fiers in late November. It […] Oakland Athletics smartly re-signed Mike Fiers to two-year deal - Call to the Pen - Call to the Pen - A Major League Baseball Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Mariners Moose Tracks, 12/23/18: Rick Rizzs, Ben Gamel, and Mike Fiers

Start your Sunday right. The Mariners sent Ben Gamel over to the Brewers in exchange for Domingo Santana; however, that deal may not be official yet. Sounds like Ben Gamel was and still is on a cruise ship when traded by Seattle to #Brewers. Not sure about maritime law. Might not be official until he docks.— Tom (@Haudricourt) December 22, 2018 We hope Ben enjoys his vacation and we wish him luck in Milwaukee. In Mariners News... Brew Crew Ball provides insight as to why Milwaukee may have been willing to part with Domingo Santana. These are the coolest ever. My friend Whitney...

MLB Roundup 12/23: Mike Fiers signs in Oakland

MLB Roundup 12/23: Mike Fiers signs in Oakland

A mostly quiet day before the holidays Mike Fiers signs two-year deal with Oakland Saturday was a mostly quiet day around the league as teams are presumably (and hopefully, from my perspective) getting ready to take a little time off from wheeling and dealing for the holiday season. That doesn’t mean things were totally quiet, however. The Athletics, a day after pulling off a big trade for Jurickson Profar, made another move to bolster their rotation. They re-signed Mike Fiers to a two-year deal worth around $15 million. The right-handed starting pitcher joined the Athletics in the...

A’s bring back Mike Fiers, finally have starting pitcher

The A’s left Mike Fiers off their playoff roster and then non-tendered him, making the pitcher a free agent. It appeared evident they weren’t keen on bringing the right-hander back in 2019. To the contrary ... Not only is Fiers returning, he’s getting a two-year contract. According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the package will be worth between $14 million and $15 million. Fiers, 33, was 12-8 with a 3.56 ERA last season. That included 5-2 and 3.74 with the A’s, who went 8-1 in his starts after he arrived from Detroit in a July trade. From the season-ending rotation, Edwin Jackson,...
