The emergence of strikeouts for Mike Leake

It's Mike Leake's world -- we just live in it. Prior to the start of the season, I did my best to come up with a scenario in which a historically average Mike Leake could be viewed as a crucial contributor for the St. Louis Cardinals. I must note that I wanted Leake's value to extend beyond mere "innings eater" status, and in the end, I concluded that in order for this to happen, the 28-year-old right-hander needed to strike out hitters more frequently. Well, over the last week and a half (two starts per pitcher), Leake has been, without a doubt, the most effective starting pitcher on the...

Cards News and Notes: Hazelbaker and Soco return, TyLy, Leake

Yesterday's VEB Mike Matheny needs to trust Tyler Lyons more: My take on why Tyler Lyons should be used in more important situations. Mike Leake employs new strategy of pitching excellently: Yesterday's Hunt and Peck, which had the inside scoop on Mike Leake's decision to pitch better. Cardinals promote Hazelbaker: the first roster move of the day Paul DeJong, Jacob Wilson and Tommy Edman Homer; Luke Weaver Strikes Out 8: Your daily farm report Hazelbaker/Socolovich promoted, McKenry to AAA, Peralta to DL: the resulting moves from Hazelbaker's promotion. The back-up catcher's back up gets...

Mike Leake employs new strategy of pitching excellently - A Hunt and Peck

The bold move appears to be paying off. St. Louis --  After signing a five year, $80 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals in the winter, Mike Leake found himself off to a rough start with the team he is slated to be with until 2020. In his first six starts he surrendered twenty-three runs and struck out only twenty-two batters. In his last two starts he has stuck out twenty-one. Only Leake and Bob Gibson have pitched back-to-back games where they have struck out ten and walked no one for the Cardinals. "I just thought, you know, maybe I should start pitching excellently and see...

The Cardinals starters compared to preseason expectations

How is the starting pitching staff doing so far this year? Yesterday, we took a look at how the Cardinals position players were doing compared to expectations, now let's take a look at the starting pitching (I will spare everyone from a look at the bullpen). First Mike Leake. This is what he's done so far: Mike Leake IP K/9 BB/9 GS ERA FIP WAR 2016 111 6.2 1.4 18 4.14 4.01 1.4 Pace 204 6.2 1.4 33 4.14 4.01 2.6 This is where we and the various projection systems had him at the beginning of the season. The strikeouts and WAR were about right, but VEB was a little...

Pirates bullpen shuts down Cardinals in 5-2 loss

Matt Carpenter went 0-5 and the rest of the offense followed his lead. As a person who does not like spending a lot of time on terrible games, I'll try to make this quick.  You don't want to read about this game either.  The Cardinals offense wasn't good.  Mike Leake was Mike Leake, he just so happened to give up most of his hits in the same innings.  The bullpen was good.  Randal Grichuk got a hit.  Aledmys Diaz walked twice. *fart noise*  That's about it. The game started well enough for the Cardinals.  Mike Leake's mojo worked for the first 4 innings.  He gave up a hit to Andrew...

Adam Duvall makes All Star team as lone Cincinnati Reds representative

Congrats, Adam. Way back when the Cincinnati Reds traded Mike Leake to the San Francisco Giants for Keury Mella and some 26 year old notaprospect, we didn't see the 2016 MLB All Star Game selections as anything of note.  Mella, of course, was a promising prospect, but he was destined for A-ball and was years away from the big leagues at all, much less from cracking an All Star roster. Of course, we were then what we still are today:  idiots.  Adam Duvall was that 26 year old career minor leaguer, and almost a full year later he's the lone Reds player heading to San Diego as an All...
