By rarely allowing the ball out of the infield, Matt Bowman has been one of the unsung heroes of the Cardinals’ 2016 season. Splitting a four-game series on the road against the best team in Major League Baseball is an accomplishment in and of itself. Pulling this off after being down 3-1 in the final game in the bottom of the 7th with the home team having the bases full, nobody out, and the top of the order waiting just around the corner is a near miracle. A quick primer if you missed it or need your memory refreshed: Mike Leake started the 7th inning, and even though he was masterful...

Improbable pitching and offensive production lifts Reds over Cardinals Mike Leake took on his former team (his last start against them did not go so well: 6.1 IP, 6 ER, 10 hits). Brandon Finnegan took the mound for the Reds. Lineup: I will be pleased when Matt Carpenter returns tomorrow. Brandon Finnegan is not a particularly good pitcher. He has had exactly one game this year allowing fewer than six baserunners. He's averaging a walk every 2 innings. His K/BB is 1.46. Over his last 6 starts, he has allowed nearly an ER/inning. But the narrative is that the...

Cincinnati Reds vs. St. Louis Cardinals Thursday, August 4, 201612:35 PMGABP Brandon Finnegan vs. Mike Leake The Reds get to deal with a rubber match today in a businessman's special. Brandon Finnegan gets the start for Cincinnati, and he's coming off of 6 shutout innings in San Diego in his last start. He's faced the Cardinals twice so far this year, and has only given up 2 ER in 12 innings. The story of this game, though, will be Mike Leake making his second start back in Cincinnati. He didn't fare very well earlier this year, as the Reds tagged him for 6 runs on...

Few expected Duvall to be so productive this season. How should Cincinnati handle his first half success? When the Reds traded Mike Leake to the Giants a season ago, the player most fans were excited about acquiring was Keury Mella. At the time the deal was made Mella was the top prospect in the Giants system according to MLB.com. It looked like this deal was a decent one for Cincinnati, and that they had acquired a nice pitching prospect for a starter who would be a free agent at season's end. For many the second piece the Reds received, Adam Duvall, was almost an afterthought. He was...
