Cardinals come back from 5-run deficit, lose anyway 7-6 to Reds

The Reds bullpen is as bad as advertised. Mike Matheny kind of gave up on this game.  The Cardinals were losing 4-1 and Mike Leake came back out for the 7th inning.  He didn't look good, but he didn't have a lot of pitches so he stayed in.  Normally, I'd be ok with this.  Losing by three runs is a low leverage situation and sure why not - go ahead and save your bullpen for a probable loss.  But the Cardinals were coming off an off-day and they normally don't face bullpens as bad as the Cincinnati Reds.  So he left him in, Leake gave up two runs, and well look at the final score.  Do...

Reds vs. Cardinals, Game 1: Preview/Predictions Thread

Cincinnati Reds vs. St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday, June 7, 20167:10 PMGABP John Lamb vs Mike Leake An old friend visits the ballpark tonight, as Mike Leake makes his first start at GABP as a Cardinal. Mike Leake is the same guy we remember, and is on a streak of 5 straight quality starts. He's yet to face the Reds since leaving Cincinnati at the trade deadline last year. Speaking of the trade deadline last year, John Lamb gets the ball for Cincinnati. Lamb bounced back in a big way against the Rockies in Denver after getting knocked around by the Brewers on the last...

An early evaluation of the Mike Leake contract

The signing of Mike Leake was controversial among fans at the time. After two months, how has his contract looked for the Cardinals? The 2016 St. Louis Cardinals have played exactly one-third of their season, and the contract of the club's marquee free agent signing of last offseason, starting pitcher Mike Leake, has yet to reach the 7% mark of its duration. The first two months of Leake's Cardinals tenure featured some ups and downs and were, by and large, an exercise in confirmation bias. Those who disliked the signing, viewing the contract as an emotional overpay for an average pitcher...

Reds snap 11 game losing streak, beat Brewers in game full of weirdness and stupidity

Despite Alfredo Simon's idiocy and fortunate for some weird last inning replay, the Reds start a win streak! The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game Adam Duvall. I'm not sure that there's anything left to be written about him at this point. In a season full of disappointment, frustration, and frustratingly disappointing injuries, Duvall has been a shining star. Keeping in mind that he was generally considered the throw in a trade the Giants made for nine starts of Mike Leake, and this is a seriously impressive two months of the season. In this one, he went 2-5 with 2 runs scored...

5/26/2016 Recap: Leake Puts Self to Sleep on Mound, Cards Lose Dinger Contest

In a contest of boring pitchers and solo dingers, the Cardinals drop the series opener against the quite-good Nationals. Pregame Today, the Cardinals take on the NL East-leading Nationals in our nation's cesspool capital. I can say that, because I live here. Mike Leake takes the hill for the middling Cards, while Joe Ross twirls for the 29-19 Nationals. Leake vs. Ross is the pitching equivalent of watching competitive grass growing on ESPN 10. Both are low-velocity control artists with that special quality that makes anybody that watches them pitch fall asleep. Whatever unfortunate...
