Mike Redmond discusses A.J. Burnett window treatment (w/video)

PHILADELPHIA -- With A.J. Burnett on the hill last night for the Phillies, former Marlins teammate Mike Redmond was asked about his memories of the pitcher, and it wasn't that eight-walk no-hitter in San Diego that topped the discussion. Instead,...

Miami Marlins: Mike Redmond recalls A.J. Burnett antic (with video)

Watching ex-Marlins teammate A.J. Burnett start for the Phillies Friday night brought back some memories for Marlins manager Mike Redmond. It was Redmond who caught Burnett’s 1999 debut against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Marlins hoping to get well-rested closer Steve Cishek into game tonight

PHILADELPHIA – The Marlins are 12 days into the season and Steve Cishek, one of the most efficient closers in baseball last season, had not pitched in eight days. Cishek, who is 2-for-2 in save opportunities, last pitched Apr. 3 against Colorado. He threw a bullpen today before the Marlins series-opener against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park and manager Mike Redmond was hoping to get him into the game. “We got to get him in there,” Redmond said. “He’s been able to throw and get some bullpens in. It’s tough. Sometimes that happens at the same time too he might pitch three or...

Marlins manager Mike Redmond not losing faith in Carlos Marmol

WASHINGTON – Mike Redmond will not second guess his decision to bring in Carlos Marmol in the eighth inning on Wednesday or intentionally walk Anthony Rendon to get to Jayson Werth with the bases loaded. The result was Werth taking Marmol deep for the deciding runs in the Nationals’ 10-7 victory. “It’s easy to second guess now and say I should have done that or I should have done this,” Redmond said. “I still felt good about having Marmol out there. This guy has closed a lot of big games, pitched in a lot of big situations in his career. That’s why we signed him. “We’re...

Crazy 8th: Mike Redmond dissects decision-making in decisive inning

WASHINGTON -- Acknowledging that Wednesday's eighth inning left plenty of room for second-guessing, manager Mike Redmond addressed some of the thinking that went into his use of the bullpen in last night's 10-7 loss to the Nationals. First, a quick...

Marlins pitcher Jacob Turner returns to South Florida, will have MRI on shoulder/back area

WASHINGTON – Manager Mike Redmond said pitcher Jacob Turner’s pain was in the “shoulder or back area” after feeling discomfort while taking batting practice on Tuesday. Turner has returned to South Florida after being placed on the DL retroactive to April 4. He will undergo an MRI. “I don’t know if maybe he over swung, it doesn’t really matter, he took a swing and felt something in his shoulder or back area,” Redmond said. “He tried to play catch and was a little stiff.” The Marlins are hoping Turners misses just two starts. “We just want to be overly cautious,” said...

Redmond not surprised with Marlins’ offensive surge; Dietrich unhappy with agent for having error changed

WASHINGTON – Perhaps the most stunning of all the numbers surrounding the Marlins’ quick start is the team that finished dead last in the majors last season with 3.2 runs per game, is now leading all of baseball with 6.0 a game. The Marlins scored 42 runs in their seven-game season-opening homestand, thanks to a .294 team batting average (second) and a .333 average with runners in scoring position (tied for second). Manager Mike Redmond, though, is not acting surprised. “I don’t know that it is hard to believe,” Redmond said. “We felt like the guys we brought in would drastically...

Has the time come for Marlins SS Adeiny Hechavarria to become a permanent top-of-the-order hitter?

MIAMI – Mike Redmond said a year ago he envisioned shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria as a top of the order hitter. On Friday, Hechavarria took advantage of his first opportunity in the leadoff spot. Hechavarria had four hits on Friday to bring his total to 11 to start the season, the second most by a Marlin through the team’s first five games. He will have a chance to add to that total tonight batting leadoff once again. “He really has had amazing at bats,” Redmond said. “He had a nice spring. You could kind of see him getting more and more comfortable with his at bats. He’s been...

Marlins manager Mike Redmond would like Jacob Turner to build off his strong spring

MIAMI – Jacob Turner makes his first start of the season today after an encouraging spring in which he added a few mph to his fastball. “The ball was coming out of his hand really well,” manager Mike Redmond said. “He was throwing hard. He had a couple of really nice starts against the Tigers. Hopefully he’ll continue to build off that today with a solid start and give us a chance to win the game.” The right hander had a 2.79 ERA in 19.1 innings this spring with 10 strike outs and seven walks. He was a different pitcher from last spring when he crumbled after being projected as...

Mike Redmond tells ump ‘you got it right,’ leaves field without challenging

MIAMI – Mike Redmond hasn’t ended a discussion with an umpire in such a friendly fashion in. … maybe forever. “I said, ‘hey you got it (right),” he said. “I’m out of here.’’’ Redmond’s first possible challenge of the season came in the fifth inning of the Marlins 4-3 victory over Colorado on Tuesday. It ended with hitting coach Frank Menechino giving the Marlins manager the thumbs up sign from the dugout, which the Marlins have designated as the ump made the right call, no challenge necessary. If the call is wrong, Menechino will take off his cap. Menechino received...

Redmond calls cleanup hitter options this season for Marlins an ‘upgrade’ from Polanco & Co. last year

MIAMI – In the end it was Casey McGehee’s experience that convinced Mike Redmond to bat the veteran third baseman cleanup. “Casey seemed like a natural fit,” Redmond said. “He’s been through the battles. The key is to try to get Giancarlo (Stanton) as many good pitches to hit as he can.” Garrett Jones will hit cleanup against right-handers, but against lefties like Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa, Redmond was to get better protection for No. 3 hitter Stanton with a right-handed batter. Redmond then recalled last season’s opening day lineup when Placido Polanco was hitting...

McGehee hitting cleanup, Baker second for Marlins tonight vs. Rockies

MIAMI – Casey McGehee has just 112 plate appearances as the cleanup hitter in his five-season in the major leagues, but in his first game back after spending a year in Japan he will be in the fourth spot against the Rockies tonight. McGehee will hit behind Giancarlo Stanton and Jeff Baker is in the two hole in manager Mike Redmond’s first lineup for the 2014 season. McGehee has a career .218 average with three home runs hitting cleanup (22-for-101). He has hit fifth most of his career. Redmond wants to use a right-handed hitter in the fourth spot against lefties to better protect Stanton....
