Cal Raleigh is making some improvements behind the plate

This week Cal Raleigh will be representing the Mariners’ Modesto affiliate in the California League All-Star Game, including an invitation to the Home Run Derby. This is a good time, then, to take a deep dive into Seattle’s 2018 third-rounder. The comparisons are obvious, and will only become more remarked upon over time, so let’s get them out of the way now. There are plenty of surface similarities between Mike Zunino and Cal Raleigh. Both attended Florida state schools for college (Z at Florida, Cal at FSU). Both have fathers who have been involved with baseball at a high level for...

Twins: 5, Rays 3 - Rays keep it close, but can’t close out Twins

Can we have some of those runs from yesterday/ After yesterday’s crazy 14-3 bout of the Minnesota Twins, the Tampa Bay Rays are looking to continue their hot hitting streak. Rays will send Opener Ryne Stanek with Jalen Beeks as the bulk pitcher, and would face off against young ace Jose Berrios. Rays would also welcome back Mike Zunino to the lineup after being on the IL since May 10th. How many runs in this lineup tonight? https://t.co/Uc2b9dBxqq #RaysUp pic.twitter.com/Z5mTlhZjeC— Tampa Bay Rays (@RaysBaseball) May 31, 2019 Willians Astudillo didn’t want to wait for the Rays...

Mike Zunino returns to lineup as Rays inch back to full health

ST. PETERSBURG - There have been plenty of seasons when the Rays made it through 162 games while using only three catchers. In 1999, they used two for the entire season.Which sort of puts last month in perspective. In one 11-game stretch, the Rays used six different starting

Rays designate Erik Kratz; activate Mike Zunino

After losing three catchers to injury, the Rays acquired 39-year old catcher Erik Kratz (who had been designated by the Giants) to help fill the void at back stop alongside Travis d’Arnaud. Coming off a 2018 post-season with the Brewers, Kratz has performed well as an emergency option, but with the return of the team’s primary catcher, it was time for another designation for assignment. It’s a shame, because honestly I’ve liked his work behind the plate. I would have liked to see what the Rays could have done with two catchers on the bench or by trying d’Arnaud in the field, but...
