Moreland Travis Go Yard In 9-6 Win Over Northeastern

(Boston Herald Photo)In the first game action of 2017, Mitch Moreland and Sam Travis each clouted three-run HRs to pace Boston to a 9-6 win over Northeastern University. The Huskies actually outhit The Carmine Hose 9-8, but the dual 3-run blasts proved the difference for Boston. Sox hurler Brian Johnson pitched two hitless innings, with a string of minor leagues filling out the game. Also collecting hits for the Red Sox were: Deven Marrero, Blake Swihart, Pablo Sandoval (a double capped by a head-first slide into 2B), Brian Bogusevic, Chris Young and Steve Selsky. Red Sox 9, Northeastern 6: First game in the books

One game down, 200 to go The Red Sox start playing major-league teams on Friday, but before that they had their annual tune-up game against college competition. There was only one game this year, but Northeastern was able to keep the game relatively close thanks to shaky performances from a few pitchers. We were only able to actually see the first couple innings, but there are a few points worth noting based off the box score and the observations from the beat writers in attendance. Mitch Moreland and Sam Travis go deep The Red Sox are looking for some power to make up for David Ortiz’...

Sam Travis 'Leader In The Clubhouse' As 2017 Sox Sleeper

Sam Travis 'Leader In The Clubhouse' As 2017 Sox Sleeper

()If you're looking for a true sleeper candidate on the 2017 Red Sox, Sam Travis may be your guy. Don't be surprised if Travis get FenwayNation's 2017 'Under The Radar' Award (for under-recognized contributions). Way back before last Thanksgiving, we profiled Travis as a potentially big contributor this year. The 23-year-old had a monster Spring Training late year, hitting .469 and knocking in 13 runs. Then, at AAA last May, he tore his ACL. Travis is now back, bulked up, and ready to fill-in at 1B, DH or wherever. One role for the right-handed hitter might be to platoon with Mitch Moreland...

First Red Sox Lineup Of The Year Has Mookie On Top

When the Red Sox take on the Northeastern University Huskies tomorrow, it will mark the first time that John Farrell posts a 2017 lineup. So, here it is: Mookie Betts RF; Xander Bogaerts SS; Mitch Moreland 1B; Chris Young LF; Pablo Sandoval 3B; Sam Travis DH; Marco Hernandez 2B; Rusney Castillo CF; Christian Vazquez C. The game will start at 1:05 PM and—of course—will not be on television or radio. You might try to catch a foreign soccer match on NESN, though. This year, The Carmine Hose will not be facing that other institution from Chestnut Hill.

One Big Question: Can Mitch Moreland thrive on the long end of the platoon?

One Big Question: Can Mitch Moreland thrive on the long end of the platoon?

Mitch Moreland wasn’t great against righties last year. Can he prove that was a fluke? Welcome to Over The Monster’s One Big Question series. For the next 40 (week)days, we will be trying to answer one important question for each player on the Red Sox 40-man roster. The goal is to find one interesting portion of each player’s game to watch for, whether that be in spring training or the early regular season. We’ll be going straight down the list on the team’s roster page, meaning we’ll be going in alphabetical order through each position group, starting with the pitchers. Today,...

MLBPA chief Tony Clark not discouraged by pull-back in spending by Red Sox

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Red Sox to whom Major League Baseball Players’ Association chief Tony Clark spoke featured plenty of high-priced players. David Price, Hanley Ramirez, Rick Porcello, Pablo Sandoval and Dustin Pedroia all will earn $15 million or more this season, in some cases much more. What the Red Sox don’t have in spring training this season is a high-priced free-agent acquisition, a departure from recent years. Daily Red Sox Links: Christian Vazquez, Joe Kelly, Mitch Moreland

Today’s links look at Boston/New York bidding wars, Joe Kelly’s simplified approach, and the worst transactions of the winter.
