Hanley Ramirez won’t adjust approach if hitting behind Mookie Betts

FORT MYERS — For those who believe in the effectiveness of reliable lineup protection, Hanley Ramirez might be the most important player in the Red Sox batting order.Ramirez, who hit cleanup behind Mookie Betts yesterday for the first time during the Sox’ 8-7 exhibition win over the Twins, will likely play the role of bodyguard for the team’s best hitter. With David Ortiz retired, Betts won’t have the protection he did for a dozen regular-season games last year and all three postseason games.Ramirez doesn’t see it as a responsibility.“As a player you don’t think about that,”...

Sam Travis and the Middlebrooks/Shaw Trap

Sam Travis and the Middlebrooks/Shaw Trap

Travis is an exciting power-hitting prospect. The Red Sox have seen a few of those recently who have flamed out. Maybe it’s just me but I’ve had some hard luck with Red Sox prospects recently. Obviously there have been a number of players who have worked out, such as Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts and even Jackie Bradley Jr., if the last season and a half are to be believed. However, two players that never reached the potential they exhibited still stick in my craw: Will Middlebrooks and Travis Shaw. Middlebrooks was drafted in the fifth round of the 2007 draft and made his MLB debut...

Derek Jeter:

Derek Jeter: "I Love Watching Mookie Betts Play"

Yankee legend Derek Jeter has one guy in major league baseball he likes watching—and it's your current Red Sox right-fielder. At a team gathering for Yankee minor-leaguers, the former pinstripe captain was asked who he likes in baseball today. His response was, "I love watching Mookie Betts play. Anyone who goes and plays the game hard." This high praise for The Mookster is understandable, since Betts brings the same respect for the game that so characterized Jeter's career. Pretty cool.

Gamethread: Red Sox vs. Northeastern

Gamethread: Red Sox vs. Northeastern

First gamethread of the year! The Red Sox are playing a baseball game today. It’s against a college team, and most of the regulars will be out, but it’s a baseball game dammit. Plus, Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts are playing, and that’s neat. As far as I know, it’s only going to be a radio broadcast today but I’ll keep an eye out to see if it’s on MLB TV or if Northeastern has some sort of stream. If I find something, I’ll update this. Either way, there’s baseball being played.

Dave Dombrowski: Red Sox would like to have Xander Bogaerts, Mookie Betts for long time, but aren’t in rush to extend them

Xander Bogaerts and Mookie Betts are two Red Sox players who are potential superstars and obviously the team would like to have them part of their long-term future. Bogaerts is a free agent after the 2019 season, while Betts is a free agent after 2020. Appearing on Kirk & Callahan Thursday morning, Red Sox president […]

Hanley Ramirez tells Red Sox fans everyone must move on from David Ortiz

Say it ain’t so Hanley! But he’s right. As much as it pains us all, David Ortiz is not walking through that door. David Ortiz is retired. The Red Sox haven't won a postseason series without Big Papi since 1999. When Theo Epstein plucked Ortiz out of relative obscurity prior to the 2003 season the iPhone was still four years away, the most recent Star Wars film was Attack of the Clones, and Mookie Betts was just ten years old. First Red Sox Lineup Of The Year Has Mookie On Top

First Red Sox Lineup Of The Year Has Mookie On Top

When the Red Sox take on the Northeastern University Huskies tomorrow, it will mark the first time that John Farrell posts a 2017 lineup. So, here it is: Mookie Betts RF; Xander Bogaerts SS; Mitch Moreland 1B; Chris Young LF; Pablo Sandoval 3B; Sam Travis DH; Marco Hernandez 2B; Rusney Castillo CF; Christian Vazquez C. The game will start at 1:05 PM and—of course—will not be on television or radio. You might try to catch a foreign soccer match on NESN, though. This year, The Carmine Hose will not be facing that other institution from Chestnut Hill.

Daily Red Sox Links: Mookie Betts, Sam Travis, Pedro Martinez

Today Mookie Betts is an MVP candidate, Sam Travis could make an impact in 2017 and Pedro Martinez provides an example of how to succeed in Boston. Mookie Betts came in second in AL MVP voting last season. He’ll be in the running again this time around as well. (Mike Cole; NESN) Sam Travis is a prospect who could be making plays for the Red Sox very soon. (Christopher Smith; MassLive) Lost in the obsession with Pablo Sandoval’s new slim physique is that how he responds to his labrum surgery will be just as important. (Alex Speier; Boston Globe) Chris Sale could learn a lot from...

Should Bogaerts And Betts Get Toews and Kane Tratment?

Should Bogaerts And Betts Get Toews and Kane Tratment?

()Early last June, Boston.com's Eric Wilbur suggested that the Red Sox should lock-up Xander Bogaerts and Mookie Betts to contemporaneous long-term contracts—as the Chicago Blackhawks did with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane (they inked 8-year, $84 million extensions on the same day in 2014). If anything, the rest of the 2016 season made that strategy even more savvy—and could also include Jackie Bradley, Jr. With each passing year, this trio of 'Killer B's' (and a fourth on the horizon in Andrew Benintendi) will get more and more expensive to keep in Boston. So, what's stopping John...

MLB Network names Mookie Betts #8 on their Top 100 Players Right Now

Another ranking featuring a Red Sox player? If it’s not Mookie Betts you’re doing it wrong. Remember when it was a question of whether Mookie Betts or Rusney Castillo would emerge as the right field solution? Seems like a long time ago. The folks at MLB Network have moved well past that non-controversy and in their latest ranking placed Betts number eight overall. Out of the best players in both leagues, Betts is eighth! The full list is available but here are the top ten to get you started: 10. Joey Votto 9. Bryce Harper 8. Mookie Betts 7. Manny Machado 6. Miguel Cabrera 5. Jose...

Mookie Betts's 'ugly' batting practice is all part of the plan

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Mookie Betts has looked terrible in batting practice in the early days of spring training at JetBlue Park. He pops the ball up. He swings and misses. He slaps grounders the other way as if it’s better to hit the ball off the first-base bag than to hit it off the fence. To his hitting coach, Betts looks as terrible in batting practice as Eddie Murray."If you ever watched Eddie Murray take BP, it was the ugliest BP you’ll ever see," Boston [.
