A sweep unswept: Reds 4, Phillies 3

A sweep unswept: Reds 4, Phillies 3

A promising afternoon became a winnable loss. Everybody’s anxious to see Aaron Nola return to form, and with a heater touching the mid-90s and a diving curve, he looked like today could be the day. The Phillies had a healthy, if a bit meandering, Nola on the mound with a rested bullpen behind him following Nick Pivetta’s complete game on Saturday. But those full counts kept creeping in, and Nola was offering more long at-bats than he should have been. In the second, the Reds plunked a couple of hits off of him and squeezed out an early 1-0 lead. Are you a fan of the “hustle”...

The Phillies go for a three-game sweep of the Reds this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. The Phils, led by a stellar outing from Nick Pivetta, shut down the Reds on Saturday, 4-1.Pivetta tossed a complete game in the win, the first of his career. Jay Bruce also contributed in the victory and is now the third player with at least four homers and 11 RBIs through his first five games with a team dating back to 1920. Home Sweet HomeThe Phillies enter Sunday having won 22 of their 33 games at Citizens Bank Park this season. The .667 winning percentage ranks sixth in baseball. The club has won...

This one’s for you, Jack: Phillies 4, Reds 1

Nicky P gives a glimpse of what he can do when he’s right I’ll admit it. I didn’t have any hope for Nick Pivetta this season. He’s done nothing but disappoint when given the opportunities to succeed and still many of us keep coming back to the well. The fastball is too good, the curveball is too good, it’s all there for him to be really good. And yet he continually disappoints. Not on Saturday. Nick Pivetta was incredible. He went the full nine innings, notching his first complete game of his career, scattering six hits with nary a walk allowed. His first inning was a little...

Reds at Phillies, Game 2 - Preview and Lineups

The Reds face off against the Fightin’ Jay Bruces this afternoon after a lackluster loss last night. Tanner Roark gets the ball for the Reds, facing off against a former division rival that he’s faced 22 times over his career. Results haven’t always gone his way in this ballpark, though, and he owns a 5.30 career ERA at Citizens Bank. He’ll face Nick Pivetta, who after starting the season in the big league rotation, is making his third start back from a minor league stint. Something appears to have worked, though, as he threw 6 shutout innings without walking anybody and striking...

After a tough road trip, the Phillies head back east with a series win. I’d like to thank John Stolnis for summing up the past few days so that I don’t have to. The last week in Phillies-land:1. Well, that wasn’t it, either: Dodgers 8, Phillies 0

Nick Pivetta twirled a gem, but the Phillies never scored for him, and left L.A. without a win. If you’re the kind of person who feels like one series or one game can determine a season, then this weekend the Phillies spent in L.A. wasn’t for you. They dropped all three games against the Dodgers, facing some starting pitching that put theirs to shame, scoring only six runs total to the Dodgers’ 18, and left down in a stunned, bewildered state. The Phillies are still the Phillies, a team comprised of a lot of good players but with some decisions to make as the season goes on, but they...

It’s series finale time in L.A. Welcome to slightly-later-in-the-afternoon baseball. The struggling Nick Pivetta faced Rich Hill at 4:10, hopefully replicating his last performance, except for the home runs he gave up early. Phillies pitchers love getting hit in the first inning. The Dodgers don’t need that kind of help.

Pivetta shines in return to Citizens Bank Park; Phillies trump Cards behind Hernandez blast

Nick Pivetta struggled in the first inning, surrendering homers to two of the first four batters he faced, but settled down to retire the next ten hitters en route to a 4-3 victory over the Cardinals.Pivetta was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley in mid-April following four starts and posting an 8.35 ERA. His effort on Tuesday night may have earned him another start later this week when the Phillies are in Los Angeles.“Yeah, that’s something we’re going to discuss,” manager Gabe Kapler told reporters afterward. “We’re not quite there yet.”The Cardinals raced out to a 3-0 lead in...
