The competition, as much as the coaching staff wants to frame it, is between Nick Pivetta and Vince Velasquez. In a perfect world, both would pitch well enough to earn the spot, but Pivetta’s debut (1 2⁄3 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 K) wasn’t the right foot to get started on.
