You Cannot Replace Past Performance

U.S.S. Mariner — One of the most common questions I get asked is why won’t the Mariners bring up Nick Franklin to play shortstop, considering how poorly Brendan Ryan and Robert Andino are hitting right now. This seems to be the primary question Mariners fans are asking every writer, as Larry Stone also tackled this subject yesterday, noting [...]-- This post came from: U.S.S. Why the Mariners are handcuffed in their middle infield

Mariners Blog | Seattle Times — There has been plenty of justifiable discussion of late pertaining to how the Mariners can continue to carry both Brendan Ryan and Robert Andino on the same roster when Ryan is batting .129 and Andino .169. It's certainly a valid question for any team hoping to win more than it loses. And there is a valid answer that I'm sure very few fans and pundits want to hear: the alternative could be far worse. First of all, bringing up one or both of Carlos Triunfel or Nick Franklin will require dropping either Ryan or Andino. Now, if you drop Ryan from the team, you throw away any of the defensive valu...

Mariners going with tandem at shortstop

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Mariners manager Eric Wedge wanted to make it clear that he did not bench shortstop Brendan Ryan, the Tacoma News Tribune reports.  "Regardless of what has been written, I didn’t bench (Ryan)," Wedge said. "I said Andino is going to play more and we’re going to take it day to day, week to week and month to month and see what happens." Ryan has started the last two games after Robert Andino saw two starts at short. It looks like they'll be rotated as the position continues to be evaluated. Ryan is batting .148 over 61 at-bats with three RBI and 15 strikeouts. Andino has seen 40 at-bats and is h...

M's pressurizing themselves, and other pre-game notes, April 25

Mariners Blog | Seattle Times —   From different sides of the Mariner clubhouse, covering two different experiences, the verdict was the same: The heat is on, and much of it’s self-induced. “I just put so much pressure on myself at times,” said Brendan Ryan, replaced at shortstop by Robert Andino at least in the near-term. “The thing with me, you know what you get defensively, that there should be so little pressure offensively. I know how athletic I am. I know there’s so much more there. “I just try too hard, I don’t know. I get in my own way.” Across the way was Michael Morse, who got off to a sizzling start, then was hit ...

Mariners manager breaks down shortstop plan

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Mariners manager Eric Wedge announced Wednesday he's swapping shortstops, replacing Brendan Ryan in the starting lineup with Robert Andino. "I’m going to take it day-by-day, week-by-week and month-by-month, quite frankly," Wedge said, per MLB.com. "I’m going to give Robert a chance to play and see where he takes it. I like what I saw with his work and his approach this spring. I don’t feel it’s been as good in-season, but it’s been a little better here the last week in the cage. It’s an opportunity for Andino to go out and take it." Wedge said he's open to Ryan reclaiming the starting job, but...

Should Fantasy owners start looking at Nick Franklin?

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Mariners manager Eric Wedge announced Wednesday he was making a change at shortstop, replacing Bredan Ryan with Robert Andino. It's not such an interesting move because Andino is now in the lineup as what it might mean for infield prospect Nick Franklin, who is off to a promising start for Triple-A Tacoma. Franklin is one of the Mariners' top prospects, as Baseball America and MLB.com consider Franklin a top-100 prospect. Through 11 games for Tacoma, Franklin has a .325/.449/.500/.949 slash line. He also has two home runs and eight RBI, while having more walks (eight) than strikeouts (seven). ...
