First pitch: Cedeno, McCutchen scratched as Astros try to take series from Pirates

Houston Chronicle — PITTSBURGH — The Astros and Pirates will be shorthanded for a three-game series finale that starts at 12:35 CT Sunday at PNC Park. Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen (sore right knee) was a late scratch, while the Astros’ Ronny Cedeno (sinus infection) was also removed from the initial posted lineup. The Astros edged the Pirates 4-2 in 11 innings on Saturday. A victory Sunday would give the Astros a 2-1 series win and a 3-3 mark on the road against two strong teams, Pittsburgh and Detroit. No. 1 starter Bud Norris was initially scheduled to take the mound for the finale. His start was bumped to Tue...

Your 2013 VSL Cubs!

The Cub Reporter — The Cubs have moved their second Dominican Summer League (DSL) team to Venezuela (Ciudad Alianza), and so 2013 will see the debut of the VSL Cubs (and no more DSL Cubs #2). While the Cubs have signed many Venezuelan players over the years (with Carlos Zambrano, Angel Guzman, Ronny Cedeno, and Geremi Gonzalez being the most-notable ones), they have operated a team in the Venezuelan Summer League (VSL) only once previous, and that was a "co-op" team shared with the Minnesota Twins in 2007. The VSL has been in operation since 1997 and had at one time as many as a dozen teams. However, in recent ...

John Lackey a winner in return to mound

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Red Sox starter John Lackey gave up an RBI single to Ronny Cedeno in the first inning of Sunday's start against the Astros. That was all he would allow over six fantastic innings. Returning from a scary biceps injury, Lackey made his first real full start of the season and held the Astros to just one earned run on five hits and two walks over six solid frames. He was expected to be limited to five innings, but he needed only 81 pitches to finish six in the victory. Lackey (1-1) loaded the bases in the sixth, but got out of it with a strikeout and a ground out to finish his afternoon. He struck...

First pitch: Astros stack lineup with rigthanded hitters, Cedeno at DH vs. Red Sox

Houston Chronicle — BOSTON — Veteran shortstop Ronny Cedeno is an even more unlikely designated hitter candidate than second baseman Jose Altuve. But the latter has already served as DH for the Astros this season and Cedeno has received the call for a 6:10 p.m. CT game Saturday against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Robbie Grossman has been moved out of the leadoff spot and into the nine hole, while Cedeno will bat fifth. The Astros’ (7-16) lineup features seven righthanded batters and two switch hitters (Marwin Gonzalez, Grossman) against Boston lefty Felix Doubront (2-0, 4.32 ERA). “This guy’s tough on leftys,” Ast...

Astros swing for the fences in second straight win over Mariners

Houston Chronicle — Box score Game recap: RHP Lucas Harrell didn’t need much offensive support while dominating the Seattle Mariners, but he got plenty of cushion as Ronny Cedeno and Brandon Laird each hit three-run home runs in the Astros’ 10-3 victory Wednesday afternoon. Chris Carter got the attack going with a leadoff home run in the second inning on an afternoon that also was highlighted by Cy-Fair High graduate Robbie Grossman’s impressive major league debut at Minute Maid Park. Grossman had a pair of doubles, becoming only the second Astro to debut in the majors with at least two doubles. Laird was 3-for-4...

White Sox recall Tyler Greene

CBSSports.com Fantasy — The White Sox have recalled infielder Tyler Greene, the Chicago Tribune reports. Greene, 29, was slated to become the Astros' starting shortstop but lost the job to Ronny Cedeno following a trade. The Astros eventually released him, and the White Sox signed Greene on April 1.  Greene, a .224/.292/.356 career hitter, offers the White Sox a backup option across the diamond in the wake of injuries to Gordon Beckham and Angel Sanchez, both now on the disabled list.

The Astros (1-3) have lost three consecutive games. The club has 56 offensive strikeouts through its initial four games and became the first team in MLB history Friday to record at least 13 strikeouts in four consecutive contests at any point during a season. Ronny Cedeno returns to shortstop against Rangers

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Ronny Cedeno will start at shortstop for the Astros Wednesday against Texas, replacing Marwin Gonzalez from Tuesday's lineup, the Houston Chronicle reports. It's unclear how the playing time split will fall for Cedeno and Gonzalez. As the right-handed hitter of the pair, Cedeno is likely to get most starts against left-handed pitchers. However, Wednesday's opposing starter, Alexi Ogando, is also right-handed, so it doesn't appear Bo Porter will be using a strict platoon. It looks like Cedeno has the upper hand for playing time right now, but don't be surprised if Porter ends up riding the hot ...

Countdown to opening day: Comparing 2012-2013 infields

Houston Chronicle — The Astros’ 25- man roster is still murky heading into the final week of spring training, but Jeff Luhnow cleared up the infield situation Sunday when Ronny Cedeno joined the club and former first rounder Tyler Greene was sent packing. Luhnow also suggested that the team had settled on Brett Wallace at first and Matt Dominguez at third. As the Astros’ start to narrow down their roster, we’ll compare notes with the opening day roster from 2012. Since the infield seems set, let’s begin the review. FIRST BASE. 2012: Carlos Lee, 36 years old. .287, 5 HR, 29 RBI in 258 ABs before the trade. 2013: B...
