Boston Herald MINNEAPOLIS — It is not easy to squeeze 127 pitches into 42⁄3 innings like Ryan Dempster did last night. It requires both an incredible array of deep counts, walks, hits and an overall near-complete absence of command. A manager willing to give a veteran pitcher every opportunity to get the final out needed for a decision did not hurt, either.John Farrell had already come out in the fifth after pitch No. 122 to check on Dempster, who had just lost a seven-pitch battle to Pedro Florimon, who singled.

With Ryan Dempster sitting at 122 pitches (four more than any Red Sox pitcher had thrown in [...]

The Republican MINNEAPOLIS — Four wins in a row does not alter the harsh reality for Red Sox starting pitchers in May. Specifically, starting pitchers not named Clay Buchholz or Jon Lester.
Boston Red Sox May 18, 2013Boston Herald MINNEAPOLIS — Regrets? There were a few last night.Start with Red Sox manager John Farrell, who regretted sticking with wild Ryan Dempster for as long as he did. Dempster threw 127 pitches, more than in all but one of his 228 starts since 2001, and still was unable to complete the fifth inning in a game that became far closer than it ever should have been. And then, there were the Minnesota Twins, tormented once again by the one who got away.
Boston Red Sox May 18, 2013Red Sox Blog | Providence Journal By Tim BrittonMINNEAPOLIS -- Ryan Dempster's postgame diagnosis was straightforward. "I wasn't very good tonight," he said. No, Dempster wasn't at his best in Saturday's 12-5 win over the Twins, requiring 127 pitches to record just 14 outs. Dempster threw at least 24 pitches in each of his last four innings. Nevertheless, neither he nor manager John Farrell expects the elevated pitch count to affect the right-hander's next start. "I'm a pretty good judge of my body. I'm going to do what I need to get ready," Dempster said. "You've just got to go out there and recover. Recovery days are hug...

Twinkie Town Ryan Dempster (2-4, 3.75) Dempster is in his 16th major league season and he hasn't shown any signs of slowing down. In fact, his strikeout rate is currently the best it's ever been in his career (11.44 K/9). While he's been doing a great job of missing bats and limiting hits (.203 batting average allowed), he's struggled with the long ball as he's already allowed 9 home runs in 48 innings this year, though a good chunk of those came in his last start against Toronto when he gave up 3 homers and 6 runs in 5 innings. Dempster actually faced the Twins back on May 7th, and he took the los...
