The Rockies look poised to go young at second base

The Rockies look poised to go young at second base

The Rockies have a lot of young, talented players itching for playing time. This might be their shot to finally prove themselves. With the departure of DJ LeMahieu at the end of 2018, the Rockies had a hole to fill at second base. Left on their roster are two young candidates — Ryan McMahon and Garrett Hampson. If they want to, they could give Brendan Rodgers a shot at the position with a good showing in spring training. Although it would not have been surprising if the team pursued a veteran, that does not appear to be the case. On December 21, the Rockies signed free agent 1B/2B...

Saunders: DJ LeMahieu’s departure puts pressure on Rockies’ young trio, Jeff Bridich

Either Ryan McMahon, Garrett Hampson or Brendan Rodgers, all candidates to replace LeMahieu at second base, are going to have to produce big time if the Rockies are going to make it to the postseason for their third season in a row.

Thursday Rockpile: Keeping Nolan Arenado on the Rockies

Rockies news and links for Thursday, December 27, 2018 Will Rockies make a big offseason move? | Rockies.com Thomas Harding takes the post-Christmas slowdown to answer a few questions from fans, including about the future for Jon Gray and Ryan McMahon with the Rockies. He also takes a question about whether the Rockies need to make more moves in order to hold onto Nolan Arenado. Put me in the camp that the Rockies should make more moves in order to compete for a division title in 2019, but not that they need to do so in order to convince Nolan Arenado to sign an extension. Despite what...

Daniel Murphy or Justin Smoak: Who do you got?

Daniel Murphy or Justin Smoak: Who do you got?

It looks like the Rockies are going to go after one of Murphy or Smoak — who’s the better option? In a low-key manner, Thomas Harding dropped a few interesting nuggets of information early on Thursday. First, he noted that the Rockies plan to move Ian Desmond off of first base and to the outfield. So that may be that for the Ian Desmond, first baseman, experiment. Desmond would actually fit pretty well in a platoon role with Raimel Tapia in left field. Second, Harding suggests that it’s more likely that the Rockies will look to play Ryan McMahon at second base. McMahon may end up at...

Thomas Harding details how each player performed (or didn’t) in 2018 and can potentially fill in the gaps left by the three free agents, all while providing great quotes from BrainyQuote.com to best...
