The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Colorado Rockies 6-3 on Monday afternoon but found it hard to celebrate after starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong was hit in the left eye by a pitch in the second inning and wound up being hospitalized.

Vogelsong leaves game, but Pirates beat Rockies, 6-3

Given how the scene began, the sight of Ryan Vogelsong leaving the field on a cart Monday afternoon showed signs of hope. Moments earlier he was face-down in the batter’s box after taking a pitch off his face. But he was conscious and began to move, then sat, then stood. As the cart drove down the right-field line, opposing players and fans alike applauded.
