Giants lose ground in every race because of stupid game

Other than that ... The problem with evaluating pitchers, a one-act play: Ryan Vogelsong doesn't fill me with confidence these days, but that shouldn't be a slight. I'm comparing him to Ryan Vogelsong from 2012. Matt Cain from 2011 and Tim Lincecum from 2010. Madison Bumgarner the whole danged time. The bar is high, and most of the active pitchers these days don't clear it. This is an Ivy League secret club, Whiffs and Breakers, and you have to be invited to join. Vogelsong isn't there right now. Which means, by default, he probably never will be again. If he starts a postseason game, it's...

Vogelsong gives up 4 runs in loss to Snakes - Ryan Vogelsong (S) San Francisco Giants

Ryan Vogelsong allowed four runs over 5 2/3 innings as the Giants dropped a 6-2 decision versus the Diamondbacks on Monday.

SF Giants’ lineup for series opener at welcoming Arizona

Now that the Dodgers series loss is in their rearview mirror, the Giants return to the comforts of Arizona, where they’ve won 16 of their past 22 games. The three-game series starts tonight with Ryan Vogelsong vs. Wade Miley. Vogelsong pitched 6 2/3 innings of two-hit ball in San Francisco on Wednesday, but it was a struggle. He walked five and said after the game, “It was a grind. That’s the only way I can put it. I’m extremely happy I didn’t give up an runs, but I’ve got a lot of work to do before I face them again on Monday.” Miley walked four and lasted only two innings [...]

Giants overcome slow start, down Diamondbacks, 5-0

The Giants have a team ERA of 0.50 over their last 18 innings. That seems good. Ryan Vogelsong pitched the worst best game of his career. I don't think he'd argue that point. He allowed two hits in 6⅔ innings, but he was off. Every count was a full count. Every batter started with a full count, like he was being punished by a manic principal adding on an hour of detention every time he opened his mouth. Grind grind grind. Mitt sets up here, ball goes there. Mitt sets up there, ball goes here. It was tortuous. It was effective. It was the kind of game that a pitcher gets when a good team...

Ryan Vogelsong seeks bounceback for SF Giants

Gregor Blanco tries to catch Nolan Arenado’s three-run homer at Coors Field on Wednesday, one of four allowed by Ryan Vogelsong. On Tuesday night, Yusmeiro Petit pitched a complete game on 84 pitches to remind us that slinging the ball at AT&T Park is a whole lot different than at Coors Field, where Petit was hammered for six runs in four innings in his prior start. Now, Ryan Vogelsong gets a shot to remind us. He followed Petit’s game in Denver by allowing a career-high-matching eight runs five plus innings. That included four homers, or one fewer than his entire August total. Vogelsong...

Rockies shell Giants' Vogelsong en route to 9-2 victory

There would be no comeback on Wednesday, just a flat all-around performance from the Giants.

Ryan Vogelsong shelled in Giants' loss to Rockies

San Francisco Giants pitcher Ryan Vogelsong gives up eight runs, four home runs in Colorado Rockies win

Rockies hit four homers off Ryan Vogelsong, crush SF Giants; honor for Bum

(Note, just before filing this story we learned that Madison Bumgarner has won National League Pitcher of the Month for August, the second time this year he has taken the honor. However, Joe Panik lost Rookie of the Month to Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks.) By Henry Schulman Denver – With Wednesday’s 9-2 loss, the Giants dropped their season series against the last-place, injury-depleted Rockies, 10 wins to nine, which will haunt them if they lose the National League West to the Dodgers. Colorado won their final meeting of the season when Ryan Vogelsong allowed a career-high four homers and...

Tougher test for SF Giants: The Brewers, plus lineup

Now that the injury-depleted Rockies have left, the Giants take on the Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers for three games, and the offense will be tested immediately. The Giants and Ryan Vogelsong face Wily Peralta, a 15-game winner who held San Francisco to one unearned run in 6 1/3 innings in Milwaukee earlier this month. Peralta is coming off a terrible start, seven earnies in five innings against the Pirates. But in the start before that he blanked the Dodgers over six innings in Los Angeles. The Giants are shooting for their first four-game winning streak since early June. Vogelsong is...

What an ugly loss — rotten job by SF Giants’ bullpen in 14-6 loss

Washington – Ryan Vogelsong outpitched Stephen Strasburg. Then the sixth inning happened. The Giants were on their way to a Sunday matinee victory over the Nationals, a series win and a 4-2 trip. Their 5-0 lead disappeared, however, and they lost 14-6 — 13-run swing. The worst loss of the season. Once Vogelsong walked off the mound two batters into the sixth, the day turned sour for the Giants. Manager Bruce Bochy pulled him after Ian Desmond homered and summoned lefty Jeremy Affeldt. Faster than you could ask “Couldn’t Vogelsong have completed six?”, Affeldt faced five batters and...
