Dee Gordon's dash sends Giants, Vogelsong to a loss in Miami

Running game story... MIAMI – Bruce Bochy won’t have to think too hard about a leadoff hitter for his NL All-Star squad. Dee Gordon left quite an impression Tuesday night. In a second-inning blur, Gordon hit a ball to the… Continue Reading → The post Dee Gordon's dash sends Giants, Vogelsong to a loss in Miami appeared first on Giants Extra.

Gordon’s inside-the-park homer dooms Giants

Gordon’s inside-the-park homer dooms Giants In a rematch of a 3-2 Giants victory at AT&T Park in May, Mat Latos outpitched Vogelsong, holding the Giants to three runs (two earned) over six innings. Vogelsong's June was mixed, but he was on a good roll the past two starts, both scoreless, totaling 12 2/3 innings. Right fielder Gregor Blanco tried to backhand the ball off the ground to Angel Pagan, so Pagan could throw it to the infield, but Blanco pushed the ball away from Pagan. Belt had a two-out RBI single in the first inning. The Marlins added insurance against Jean Machi in the...

Extra Baggs: Buster Posey praises Andrew Susac, Duffy's improvement at 3B, etc.

SAN FRANCISCO – It’s not in Buster Posey’s nature to switch off his brain. Even when he’s playing first base, he watches and studies every pitch and every interaction on the field. When he watches Ryan Vogelsong shake off rookie… Continue Reading → The post Extra Baggs: Buster Posey praises Andrew Susac, Duffy's improvement at 3B, etc. appeared first on Giants Extra.

Another Buster Posey grand slam lifts Giants to victory

Manager Bruce Bochy, usually optimistic to a fault, could not sugarcoat the Giants’ predicament with Nori Aoki joining fellow outfielder Hunter Pence on the disabled list for an indeterminate sentence. “You lose your leadoff hitter and a guy who hits in the heart of the order, both catalyst players, that’s hard to overcome,” Bochy said. Buster Posey hit his second grand slam in less than a week, against Ian Kennedy, to support six shutout innings from Ryan Vogelsong. The third-inning slam allowed the Giants to exhale after a really rotten 24 hours in which they lost despite 14...

Giants, Vogelsong blank M's, 7-0

SEATTLE-Seattle Mariners shortstop Brad Miller wasn't charged with an error. That technicality shoveled the resulting runs onto starting pitcher Mike Montgomery's stat line, but it certainly didn't absolve Miller from…

Giants split series with convincing 7-0 win against Mariners

Matt Duffy, Norichika Aoki, and Joe Panik all had big hits, and Ryan Vogelsong pitched his best game of the year. Ryan Vogelsong, you confusing man. Earlier in the day, we all agreed that Vogelsong was the odd man out of the Giants' rotation. The larger arguments were a morass of Lincecum/Hudson/Heston disagreements, but most everyone could agree on the larger truth that Vogelsong was clearly out. Then he pitched his most convincing performance of the year, a low-drama affair with plenty of missed bats. It wasn't just that he didn't allow a run in 6⅔ innings -- it was the way he did it....

Giants out-hit, out-dinger Mets in 8-5 win

They'll go for the sweep tomorrow, but they've already secured a winning road trip. Last week, I was invited on a Pittsburgh radio show to preview the Pirates series. At one point, the host ran down the list of scheduled pitchers. "Gerrit Cole vs. Vogelsong ... Liriano vs. Hudson ... A.J. Burnett vs. Chris Heston ... it's safe to say the Pirates have the edge in all of these pitching matchups, right?" Whoa. I ... I hadn't thought of it like that. It turns out, that when the Giants go up against a good team -- without their Bumgarner, mind you -- they very rarely have the edge in starting...

Bochy discusses Cole-Vogelsong matchup; Monday’s lineups

Steve Kroner subbing for Henry Schulman for the opener of a three-game series between Pittsburgh and the Giants at China Basin: Tonight’s pitching matchup features one of the National League’s best pitchers of this season, the Pirates’ Gerrit Cole (7-2, 2.11 ERA), and one of the NL’s best pitchers of May, the Giants’ Ryan Voglesong, who went 4-0 with a 1.14 ERA last month. Moments before the above photo was taken, Giants manager Bruce Bochy talked about what makes Cole, a 24-year-old right-hander, so effective: “He’s one of those big power arms,” Bochy said. “He come at you...
