Dodgers do much to keep Giants in it, Posey talks slump, Vogelsong's `best warmup of my life'

Alas, I have to be at the airport in just a few hours, so no major blog report tonight. Here's the game story which touches on the race, Buster Posey's road trip skid and what happened to Ryan Vogelsong after… Continue Reading → The post Dodgers do much to keep Giants in it, Posey talks slump, Vogelsong's `best warmup of my life' appeared first on Giants Extra.

Giants lose again — finish trip 2-5

In retrospect, the Giants wasted a golden opportunity to overtake the Dodgers in the National League West but remain 1 ½ games out of first place. Vogelsong gave up three runs in a 28-pitch first inning, facing eight batters, giving up three hits and issuing consecutive walks, one with the bases loaded. The Giants made it 3-2 when Matt Duffy scored on Marlon Byrd’s grounder past first baseman Pedro Alvarez (E-3) and Aoki’s RBI single that chased Pirates starter Francisco Liriano with one out in the sixth. Posey and newcomer Byrd both went 0-for-5, and Posey finished the trip...

Vogelsong looks to continue recent run against Pirates, Liriano

Does Ryan Vogelsong have another good one in him against his old team to conclude this 7-game trip against the N.L. Central powers? They need it to avoid losing ground to the Dodgers in the West and the unconscious Cubs… Continue Reading → The post Vogelsong looks to continue recent run against Pirates, Liriano appeared first on Giants Extra.

Giants ship Chris Heston to minors — Marlon Byrd arrives, Mike Leake goes Saturday

Giants ship Chris Heston to minors — Marlon Byrd arrives, Mike Leake goes Saturday PITTSBURGH - Chris Heston, who pitched like a No. 2 starter for much of the season but struggled lately, was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday. A spot in the rotation had to be cleared because Mike Leake is coming off the disabled list, and the Giants decided Heston was the odd man out. Manager Bruce Bochy said Heston will return to the Giants when roster limits expand to 40 on Sept. 1. With Ryan Vogelsong pitching well his past two starts and Cain coming off a solid start, the Giants had are...

Chris Heston sent down to make room for Marlon Byrd

Calm down. It's a procedural move, mostly. Chris Heston was sent down to Sacramento to make room for Marlon Byrd. /audience gasps But that's okay! The rosters expand on September 1, and he'll be right back up. Mike Leake will take Heston's spot in the rotation, Matt Cain will get another show-me start, and everything is fine. To be fair, Heston was pitching poorly, but this has more to do with him having options left. In order to get the potential upgrade of Heston over Vogelsong for one start, the Giants would have had to send down Josh Osich for at least 10 days. I'd rather have the...

Vogelsong says remember 2012 if you think Giants are done, plus Lollis finally has an average

Ryan Vogelsong was brilliant Tuesday night, both with his arm and his perspective. He threw six two-hit shutout innings in one of the Giants' darkest hours of the season after learning they'd lost Hunter Pence to an oblique injury. It… Continue Reading → The post Vogelsong says remember 2012 if you think Giants are done, plus Lollis finally has an average appeared first on Giants Extra.

Vogelsong pitches, Bumgarner hits, Giants win

The Giants picked up their second shutout of the week, so it figures that Madison Bumgarner would be involved somehow. In the first inning of Tuesday night's game, Lance Lynn got an out with his very first pitch. He then struck Matt Duffy out on three pitches and ended the inning by getting a ludicrous outside strike call against Brandon Belt. Lynn had command, he was missing bats, and he had a wide strike zone. The only logical response for Giants fans was to make a cartoonish GULNK sound while swallowing really hard. In the first inning of Tuesday night's game, Ryan Vogelsong threw 10...

A game lost that was there for the taking, no faulting Crawford's desperate try, and now it's Vogelsong and Cain to try and save the series

It could have been such a great start to a critical trip. The Giants came into Busch Stadium feeling pretty great about themselves.  The Cardinals, as wonderful as they've been all season, were ripe to be rolled. They learned before… Continue Reading → The post A game lost that was there for the taking, no faulting Crawford's desperate try, and now it's Vogelsong and Cain to try and save the series appeared first on Giants Extra.

Giants notes: Lincecum plans to face batters soon, Panik heads to Arizona, etc.

SAN FRANCISCO – They were all on the field at the same time Sunday morning. Mike Leake threw off a bullpen mound. Matt Cain was next. Ryan Vogelsong played catch. Tim Lincecum long-tossed. Get Tim Hudson out there in his… Continue Reading → The post Giants notes: Lincecum plans to face batters soon, Panik heads to Arizona, etc. appeared first on Giants Extra.

Vogelsong strikes out eight, revitalized bullpen locks down Giants' 3-1 victory over Nationals

Running game story... SAN FRANCISCO – The Giants might be treading into a pennant stretch with a third of their lineup on the disabled list. But a well-worn bullpen had to rank among their chief concerns, too. What a difference… Continue Reading → The post Vogelsong strikes out eight, revitalized bullpen locks down Giants' 3-1 victory over Nationals appeared first on Giants Extra.

Giants lose at Wrigley — this is not a recording

CHICAGO - This four and snore stuff isn’t working out. At this rate, five and dive would be an upgrade. Matt Cain was the Giants’ third straight starting pitcher to last exactly four innings, following Chris Heston and Ryan Vogelsong, and that’s no way to rest a bullpen. Or win a game. The Giants are one loss from getting swept in a four-game series after Saturday’s 8-6 downer at Wrigley Field, which is developing a feel of playoff fever. Cain surrendered five runs on six hits and five walks, putting both the hitters and relievers in a hole. ...

Giants Splash: Mike Leake to DL — Bruce Bochy hoping for ‘nine completely healthy starts’

CHICAGO - The Giants’ disabled list now includes three starting pitchers. Mike Leake has joined the Tims, Lincecum and Hudson. The Giants placed Leake on the 15-day DL Friday with a strained left hamstring, which was sustained Monday during conditioning drills in Atlanta a day after his Giants debut. Left-handed reliever Josh Osich has rejoined the team filling Leake’s roster spot. Ryan Vogelsong is coming out of the bullpen to make two starts in place of Leake, who was acquired July 30 from the Reds for two minor-leaguers. It’s Leake’s first visit to...

Mike Leake put on DL, Josh Osich called up

Well, at least the Giants don't have too many long relievers now. The Giants gave up one of their top prospects to get Mike Leake, even though Leake was just a rental. And that's okay, see, because those 10 or so starts in the regular season were going to be really, really important. The Giants lost the first Leake start. And it looks like he'll miss at least two starts with a hamstring strain. Those final seven or eight starts had better be humdingers. To replace Leake on the roster, the Giants will call up Josh Osich, who was impressive in his debut last month. With Ryan Vogelsong back in...
