Giants notes: Lincecum plays catch, Bochy preps Vogelsong for short relief

SAN FRANCISCO – Bruce Bochy didn’t feel the need to take the Yahtzee cup to his lineup Saturday. The Giants have scored 36 runs in their last four home games, including Friday night’s 9-3 win over the A’s, and their… Continue Reading → The post Giants notes: Lincecum plays catch, Bochy preps Vogelsong for short relief appeared first on Giants Extra.

Giants beat: Vogelsong had big role in win

Giants beat: PHOENIX — Ryan Vogelsong surely has an opinion on the team’s decision to move him to the bullpen. Vogelsong was the 10th and final Giants pitcher and earned the victory with two shutout innings. Brandon Crawford scored when shortstop Cliff Pennington fielded Angel Pagan’s bases-loaded grounder and bounced a throw past the plate. Vogelsong was not aware that it was his first relief win in 10 years. Vogelsong’s 4.75 career ERA in 92 relief appearances is not that much worse than his 4.33 ERA in 159 starts, but he’s allowed far more baserunners out of the...

Giants notes: Vogelsong reflects on relief role, Aoki update, no talks to move Pagan, etc.

PHOENIX – Ryan Vogelsong declined to take questions about his demotion to the bullpen when approached Saturday. When it comes to the Giants’ success, his on-field response is more important, anyway. So maybe it wasn’t a personally gratifying moment for… Continue Reading → The post Giants notes: Vogelsong reflects on relief role, Aoki update, no talks to move Pagan, etc. appeared first on Giants Extra.

Giants win 23-hour, 34-inning game in extra innings

It didn't feel that short, though. There were four full days without baseball. If you're counting from game-to-game, there were five. So many days without baseball. Your teeth were chattering. Your nights were long. When would the embargo end? Here. Here is two baseball games, jammed into one. There will be ups and downs and diagonals, and you'll blink a lot when it's done. And you were so close to hating baseball for a little bit. A loss would have meant something. Here's what it means that Ryan Vogelsong is a reliever now or My thoughts on Brandon Belt against left-handers. Heck, we don't...

Vogelsong wins in relief in Giants’ wild second-half opener

PHOENIX – The best thing about the All-Star break for players is rejuvenating tired legs after the first-half grind. So much for that. The Giants returned from their four-day hiatus Friday night and played for 5 hours, 11 minutes before beating the Diamondbacks 6-5 in 12 innings. It was epic. The teams combined to use 17 pitchers. The Giants used 22 of their 25 players. Only Madison Bumgarner, Jake Peavy and Chris Heston were spared. Clubhouse coordinator Brad Grems was taking some hacks in the cage in case he was needed to pinch-hit in the 13th. “It felt like the start of the year at the...

Giants open 2nd half with wild 12-inning victory

Manager Bruce Bochy had nine relievers at his disposal, including the newest member of the bullpen in Ryan Vogelsong, and used all of them. Vogelsong got the win with two shutout innings and a contribution from his bat. With the bases loaded and the infield in, Pagan hit a chopper to short. The Giants, down 5-2 in the seventh, rallied to tie the game against right-handed reliever Enrique Burgos on Buster Posey’s sacrifice fly and Hunter Pence’s two-run, opposite-field homer. The game remained 5-5 through some excellent relief work by a conga line of pitchers. Cain, in his third start...

Giants use 22 of 25 players, including Vogelsong in relief, to outlast Diamondbacks

PHOENIX – Would a second All-Star break be out of the question? The Giants might need another cool drink on the pool deck after burning lungs and arms in their 6-5, 12-inning victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday night. Manager… Continue Reading → The post Giants use 22 of 25 players, including Vogelsong in relief, to outlast Diamondbacks appeared first on Giants Extra.

Ryan Vogelsong moving to the bullpen for Tim Hudson, as expected

Tim Lincecum is also not ready for a rehab assignment, so the rotation mess is solved. For now. When Tim Hudson went on the DL for one of those standard shoulder-issues/mom's-liver-transplant combos, it was easy to imagine the Giants taking their sweet time getting him ready again. It was a scenario that was very, very Giants, and it made a certain amount of sense. Except during the All-Star break, Bruce Bochy unambiguously suggested that Hudson's spot in the rotation is safe, which meant another shoe was going to drop. That other shoe is Ryan Vogelsong, who will move to the bullpen with...

Post-Game 21 Thread: Vogelsong Pounded

Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof DODGERS 7, GIANTS 3 And there we go! Dodgers win the rubber match with the Giants, as Ryan Vogelsong got pounded today by the big Dodger bats. Joc Pederson, Adrian Gonzalez, and Andre Ethier all had home runs for the Dodgers in the first (the latter, a two-run shot scoring Scott Van Slyke). Jimmy Rollins added a HR in the third to make it 5-1, and the Dodgers had a 7-3 lead by the fourth inning, so no more scoring (by either team) was even necessary). Zack Greinke (of course) takes the win to grow to 4-0. This guy is...

Post-Game 15 Thread: Maxwell's Silver Hammer

GIANTS 3, DODGERS 2 (10) Dammit, it did happen again. One night after a walkoff 3-2 defeat to the Giants, the Dodgers suffered yet another walkoff 3-2 defeat to the Giants, this time at the hand of Justin Maxwell (whose .300 BA is bound to normalize back to his career ~.225 average...just give it time). Alex Guerrero and Adrian Gonzalez both had RBIs off of Ryan Vogelsong, and Mike Bolsinger had a decent 5.2 IP start (1 ER). But Pedro Baez blew his first save of the year, and Juan Nicasio gift-wrapped the victory for the Giants in extras. The loss leaves us tied with the Padres for the...

Giants finish 0-6 trip with Bochy, Vogelsong ejected

WASHINGTON — At some point Sunday night, manager Bruce Bochy was going to get tossed. The familiar lava flow was building after a night of anger directed toward home-plate umpire Phil Cuzzi. Bochy soon followed, and both watched last innings of the Giants’ miserable trip from the clubhouse, where at least they were spared the crowd roars as the Nationals completed a 3-1 victory. Bad feelings on the field reached their apex for the Giants in the fifth inning of a 1-1 game amid mounting unhappiness with Cuzzi’s pitch calling. Bochy was ticked as far back as the first inning when...
