Vogelsong penciled in for WS Game 4 start - Ryan Vogelsong (S) San Francisco Giants

Ryan Vogelsong will start for the Giants in Game 4 of the World Series Saturday.
Vogelsong was done early, but he knew the Giants weren’t … they just needed some of that Giants Karma

Vogelsong was done early, but he knew the Giants weren’t … they just needed some of that Giants Karma

Manager Keith Comstock had a rule for the 1998 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, and Ryan Vogelsong follows it to this day. “I was told a long time ago: When you come out of the game, stay out of the way,” Vogelsong said.… Continue Reading →

Packed first 3 innings of NLCS Game 4

Steve Kroner reporting: This hasn’t been the typically low-scoring postseason game for the Giants. St. Louis leads 4-3 after three innings, and consider these items: Ryan Vogelsong is out of the game, replaced by Yusmeiro Petit to begin the fourth. Vogelsong allowed four runs (all earned) on seven hits in his three innings. Before Wednesday, he had not allowed more than one run in any of his five career postseason starts. His career postseason ERA was 1.19 Each team’s leadoff man has reached base in each of the three innings. The Cardinals have had doubles: Matt Carpenter in the first,...

NLCS Game 4 Overflow 1 Gamethread

Cards lead 4-3 after 3 innings. Vogelsong and Miller both stunk. The former is out of the game, and the latter ought to be. But AJ Pierzynski is the boss with the hot sauce. More Cardinals runs, please.

Vogelsong’s streak ends

Ryan Vogelsong had started his postseason career with five starts in which he allowed one run or less. In a little more than one inning tonight, he’s allowed two runs in Game 4 of the NLCS. He was the only pitcher in MLB history to start his postseason career with five such starts. The MLB record for any stretch of 1-run-or-less is six by Curt Schilling.

An appreciation of Ryan Vogelsong, postseason hero

An appreciation of Ryan Vogelsong, postseason hero

This is Ryan Vogelsong's sixth postseason start for the Giants, which is a sentence we all expected to read, back in 2009. If you needed a reminder, and you probably didn't, take a deep breath before Game 4 and appreciate the unlikeliness of Ryan Vogelsong. He was gone, now he's back. This is year four of the grand Ryan Vogelsong reimagining, which was supposed to last for a few months, not unlike the Todd Linden reimagining. Todd Linden was on the Giants' Triple-A team last year. Did you remember that? Probably not. That's what should have happened to Vogelsong, except he's still here,...

Bochy names Hudson for Game 3, Vogelsong to start Game 4

San Francisco Giants' manager Bruce Bochy said things can change at this time of year because it's all hands on deck, but it would take an odd set of circumstances for Hudson or Vogelsong to pitch in relief.

SF GIANTS UPDATE: Bruce Bochy names half his NLCS rotation

The rain has subsided and the Giants are hitting on the field after their media availability, which got a little weird when one reporter pursued a line of questioning about Madison Bumgarner being raised in a log cabin and another reporter clumsily trying to play quiz-show with Bruce Bochy to see if he knew the games of the Cardinals’ right fielder and second baseman. Bochy announced that Madison Bumgarner and Jake Peavy would start Games 1 and 2 in St. Louis, but would not say who will start beyond that. That made me wonder if Tim Hudson or Ryan Vogelsong had some sort of physical issue...

Nationals-Giants discussion thread: NLDS Game 4

The Nationals lived to play another day after beating the Giants. 4-1, in a must-win Game 3 on Monday. Now Gio Gonzalez gets his first start of these playoffs.  In his final seven starts of the season, Gonzalez punched up a 2.36 ERA and held batters to a .191 average. Ryan Vogelsong, who will start for […]

Giants’ Ryan Vogelsong hopes to overcome recent struggles

Ryan Vogelsong started the month of August with a two-hit, one-run complete game at the New York Mets. He then turned in a string of strong outings, posting a 3-1 record on the month with a 2.58 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. There’s a decent chance the Nationals are not facing that pitcher in Tuesday’s Game […]

Giants counting on Vogelsong in Game 4 against Nationals

SAN FRANCISCO - Technically, the Nationals remain the ones with their backs against the wall heading into Game 4 on Tuesday night at AT&T Park. But don't tell that to Ryan Vogelsong.

Nats Journal: Nationals-Giants discussion thread: NLDS Game 3

The Nationals’ season has come to this: NLDS Game 3 in San Francisco with Doug Fister facing Madison Bumgarner. One of the best left-handers in all of baseball, Bumgarner pitched the Giants into the NLDS with a complete-game shutout of the Pirates. Fister has the most postseason experience of any Nationals pitcher and has a 2.98 career playoff ERA. If the Nationals win Monday, Game 4 will be here in San Francisco on Wednesday night, with Gio Gonzalez starting for the Nationals and Ryan Vogelsong perhaps going for the Giants. The lineups are here. As always, talk about the game below. Read...

Nats Journal: Rested Giants would turn to Ryan Vogelsong in Game 4

Giants Manager Bruce Bochy said that if there’s a Game 4 at AT&T Park on Tuesday, he’d likely stick with his rotation and give Ryan Vogelsong the start. Of course, the veteran manager would prefer his team finish off the Nats this afternoon and not have to worry about Games 4 and 5 of the National League Division Series. Read full article >>
