Vogelsong, Giants stumble against Rockies

The first inning at Coors Field on Monday night lasted 37 minutes. An hour had passed by the time Ryan Vogelsong was pulled with just one down in the bottom of the second. After three hours and 13 minutes, the Giants trudged back to the clubhouse, 8-2 losers to the Colorado Rockies.

POSTGAME NOTES: Giants lose a reliever; Vogelsong disappointed with “embarrassing” outing

Well, this game had a little bit of everything bad. Ryan Vogelsong’s line had nearly as many homers (three) as outs (four). His replacement, David Huff, is almost certainly headed to the disabled list with a left quad strain. At… Continue Reading →

POSTGAME NOTES: Vogelsong hits his stride, and Hanley; Machi pulls off a rare feat

Even for Ryan Vogelsong, the 36-year-old who has been playing professionally since 1998, a little confidence can go a long way. Vogelsong fought his mechanics all spring and in his first two starts, and he gave up a leadoff single… Continue Reading →

Ryan Vogelsong, bullpen keep Dodgers quiet, Giants win 2-1

Ryan Vogelsong, bullpen keep Dodgers quiet, Giants win 2-1

Shhhhhhhh. I have a recurring dream where I die, and after walking through darkness for what seems like miles, I arrive at a gate. Guarding the gate is something with the head of Ryan Vogelsong and the body of a falcon. He gets ready to ask me a question, and I start shaking. I know at that moment that my lost faith will not be forgiven. I am doomed. I am doomed. All is lost. Then I wake up and continue doubting Ryan Vogelsong because, really, who remembers dreams? Also, I forgot to mention the Vogfalcon was perched on my first car, which someone was using as a planter box. There was a...

Post-Game 15 Thread: Giants Continue Domination of Dodgers

Post-Game 15 Thread: Giants Continue Domination of Dodgers

What they'll be doing tomorrow.GIANTS 2, DODGERS 1 Maholm did his job, allowing one run in six innings and scoring the Dodgers' only run. The rest of the lineup took a dump, including a two-base error by Kemp, CI on AGon, Kemp getting picked off (and a lost challenge by Mattingly) and a Uribe CS. Oh, and Hanley had to leave the game after getting plunked on the left hand by Vogelsong. The inning ended on a bases-loaded DP by Uribe. Afternoon shitfest tomorrow vs. Bumgarner. I'm sure the boys will come out all fired up. photo by Brant Ward/SF Chronicle

Game 15 Thread: April 16 @ Giants, 7p

These are actual festivals. Why are they all in the UK? (here, here and here) Paul Maholm (0-1, 8.10) vs. Vogelsong (0-0, 8.00). A second consecutive matchup between two pitchers with 8+ ERAs following a dispiriting 12-inning loss? It's gonna be a fest, all right, and which term for excrement you fill it up with is up to you. The bullpen, of course, is the main source of contention for Dodger fans these days, although let's not forget the bats, which went 2 for 13 with RISP yesterday. Yes, a loss to the Giants brings everybody down. Bring on the hate!

Post-Game 6 Thread: Disappointing Home Opener

Post-Game 6 Thread: Disappointing Home Opener

GIANTS 8, DODGERS 4 The Dodgers had not lost a home opener since 2007. But that streak ended at six, as Hyun-Jin Ryu struggled to get that third out in the first inning (Matt Kemp didn't help any with a fielding error in his return to play), then got snakebit by a Hanley Ramirez error in the second. Ryu gave up eight runs, six earned, and didn't come out to start the third inning. And that's basically all she wrote; heck, even the Giants can hold onto a eight-run lead every once in a while. Adrian Gonzalez and Andre Ethier had back-to-back HR in the fourth, keeping Ryan Vogelsong from...

SF GIANTS POSTGAME NOTES: Why did Vogelsong struggle? Plus Panda’s contributions and ‘ruthless’ Dodger fans

Sometimes, a manager or coach can see something about a player who feels completely differently about what is happening. In today’s 8-4 win at Dodger Stadium, Bruce Bochy suggested that Ryan Vogelsong’s pitch count caught up with him in the fifth inning, which he did not survive. This seemed to fit a pattern all spring for Vogelsong: really strong in the beginning innings, weaker (with lower velocity) later. “I hated to get him, but it looked like he hit a wall,” Bochy said. ”For three innings he was right on with his delivery and command. He had good stuff. His velocity was real...

Why the Giants will win the pennant

Why the Giants will win the pennant

Because we want them to? This is a part of the soon-to-be-published SBNation.com baseball preview, in which they asked every team blogger why their team will win the pennant. I can't jinx the Giants without every other writer jinxing their team. No one will win the pennant this year. The Yellowstone super-caldera is going to win the pennant. Good job, SB Nation. Buy canned goods, every one. The Giants lost 86 games last year. They took great pains to retain Tim Lincecum, Hunter Pence, Javier Lopez, and Ryan Vogelsong. They replaced Barry Zito with Tim Hudson and swapped out Gregor Blanco's...
