POSTGAME NOTES: Bochy sticks with Vogelsong for Game 4; A lefty gets to Lopez; Pagan says he feels no pain

Kelvin Herrera looked like he wanted to be anywhere but the batter’s box. His back foot inched towards the Giants dugout as teammates tried to stifle grins in the dugout. In front of them, Ned Yost stood with a stern… Continue Reading →

Vogey, not Bumgarner, for Giants in Game 4

Manager Bruce Bochy said after Friday’s 3-2 loss that Ryan Vogelsong will still start Game 4 rather than moving Madison Bumgarner up a day. “Vogelsong’s going tomorrow,” Bochy said. “He’s done a pretty good job for us, so he’s going to have his start tomorrow. “He has experience,” Bochy added. “He’s pitched great in the postseason, and he had one little hiccup. … We have confidence in all these guys including Vogey. It was a good ballgame tonight, but we’re not going to change things because we lost.” Did Bumgarner push hard to pitch Game 4? “He’s going to say...

World Series: Could Bumgarner replace Vogelsong in Game 4?

San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy hasn't ruled out starting Madison Bumgarner in Game 4, which would also make him available if a Game 7 is necessary.

WORLD SERIES NOTES: Will Bum come back on short rest? Plus, Bochy talks to Strickland

Ryan Vogelsong stopped in the dugout to grab his bat and get some Gatorade. “I’ve got to go hit with Bum,” he said. Well, that’s one way to look bad if you’re a pitcher. Bumgarner puts even most hitters to… Continue Reading →

Bumgarner in Game 4? Bochy says it’s possible

Bruce Bochy chats with Madison Bumgarner during Thursday’s workout at AT&T Park. I’m skeptical for a lot of reasons, but manager Bruce Bochy said in the interview room today that he and the staff have talked about starting Madison Bumgarner on three days’ rest in Game 4, instead of Ryan Vogelsong, if the Giants lose Game 3 tonight. That would allow Bumgarner to pitch Game 7 as well, on short rest, if needed. “Well, sure, we talked about it,” Bochy said. “We discuss everything, our options.” But then, Bochy reiterated what he told beat writers the other day, offering hints that...

KC's Vargas to take on Vogelsong in Game 4 of World Series

SAN FRANCISCO — Even though left-hander Jason Vargas will be making his World Series debut for the Kansas City Royals in Game 4, the Fall Classic atmosphere in San Francisco will not be foreign to him. Four years ago, while home for the offseason in Arizona, Vargas and his wife decided to fly to San Francisco to watch Game 1 of the 2010 World Series between the Giants and Texas Rangers. The Giants won, 11-7, on the way to their first World Series title in San Francisco. They followed with another championship in 2012 and are back in for a third time in five years. read more

Vogelsong was done early, but he knew the Giants weren’t … they just needed some of that Giants Karma

Manager Keith Comstock had a rule for the 1998 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, and Ryan Vogelsong follows it to this day. “I was told a long time ago: When you come out of the game, stay out of the way,” Vogelsong said.… Continue Reading →

Packed first 3 innings of NLCS Game 4

Steve Kroner reporting: This hasn’t been the typically low-scoring postseason game for the Giants. St. Louis leads 4-3 after three innings, and consider these items: Ryan Vogelsong is out of the game, replaced by Yusmeiro Petit to begin the fourth. Vogelsong allowed four runs (all earned) on seven hits in his three innings. Before Wednesday, he had not allowed more than one run in any of his five career postseason starts. His career postseason ERA was 1.19 Each team’s leadoff man has reached base in each of the three innings. The Cardinals have had doubles: Matt Carpenter in the first,...

NLCS Game 4 Overflow 1 Gamethread

NLCS Game 4 Overflow 1 Gamethread

Cards lead 4-3 after 3 innings. Vogelsong and Miller both stunk. The former is out of the game, and the latter ought to be. But AJ Pierzynski is the boss with the hot sauce. More Cardinals runs, please.

Vogelsong’s streak ends

Ryan Vogelsong had started his postseason career with five starts in which he allowed one run or less. In a little more than one inning tonight, he’s allowed two runs in Game 4 of the NLCS. He was the only pitcher in MLB history to start his postseason career with five such starts. The MLB record for any stretch of 1-run-or-less is six by Curt Schilling.

An appreciation of Ryan Vogelsong, postseason hero

An appreciation of Ryan Vogelsong, postseason hero

This is Ryan Vogelsong's sixth postseason start for the Giants, which is a sentence we all expected to read, back in 2009. If you needed a reminder, and you probably didn't, take a deep breath before Game 4 and appreciate the unlikeliness of Ryan Vogelsong. He was gone, now he's back. This is year four of the grand Ryan Vogelsong reimagining, which was supposed to last for a few months, not unlike the Todd Linden reimagining. Todd Linden was on the Giants' Triple-A team last year. Did you remember that? Probably not. That's what should have happened to Vogelsong, except he's still here,...

Bochy names Hudson for Game 3, Vogelsong to start Game 4

San Francisco Giants' manager Bruce Bochy said things can change at this time of year because it's all hands on deck, but it would take an odd set of circumstances for Hudson or Vogelsong to pitch in relief.

SF GIANTS UPDATE: Bruce Bochy names half his NLCS rotation

The rain has subsided and the Giants are hitting on the field after their media availability, which got a little weird when one reporter pursued a line of questioning about Madison Bumgarner being raised in a log cabin and another reporter clumsily trying to play quiz-show with Bruce Bochy to see if he knew the games of the Cardinals’ right fielder and second baseman. Bochy announced that Madison Bumgarner and Jake Peavy would start Games 1 and 2 in St. Louis, but would not say who will start beyond that. That made me wonder if Tim Hudson or Ryan Vogelsong had some sort of physical issue...
