Marlins Podcast Episodes MLB Network’s The Shredder rates Sandy Alcantara as the fifth-best major league starting pitcher right now behind Corbin Burnes, Justin Verlander, Carlos Rodón and Max Scherzer. Alcantara finished No. 1 in the fan vote, though. Free agent José Iglesias tells Pelota Cubana that he’s had talks with the Marlins this offseason. Iglesias is firmly in the journeyman stage of his career—played with six MLB teams over the last five...

@sandyalcantar22/Twitter Today’s Marlins news roundup also includes a call for your Jake Eder questions. Marlins Podcast Episodes Sandy Alcantara was presented with his 2022 National League Cy Young award at the annual BBWAA dinner in New York. He spent his three-minute acceptance speech thanking God, his family, close friends and members of the Marlins organization, specifically Mel Stottlemyre Jr. The physical plaque had an embarrassing typo, but he’ll presumably receive a personalized, typo-less one in the near future. Kim Ng was honored, too. Here’s her...

Which of these players has the best chance to make it on the Opening Day roster? On Wednesday, the Miami Marlins announced they would bring 27 non-roster invitees to their major league spring training camp (a 28th NRI, Daniel Castano, received his invite on Thursday). @sixto03_sanchez/Instagram What other pitchers performed at a high level after back-to-back years without any professional appearances? Pitcher injuries are unfortunately commonplace across Major League Baseball today. For anybody not named Sandy Alcantara, you need to enter the new season bracing for the possibility of an IL stint at some point. More so than ever, MLB teams are prioritizing quality over quantity when it comes to pitching—they handle their arms cautiously and do everything possible to prepare them to succeed when they’re actually on the mound. On...

Fish Stripes rewinds to one of 2022’s most satisfying Marlins wins. We’re going back to June 29 of last year against the Cardinals. Morale was pretty low for the 33-40 Marlins, but Sandy Alcantara pitched an incredible game (as he always does). The Marlins were down a run entering the ninth inning and on the ropes against St. Louis closer Ryan Helsley. Down to their final out, Avisaíl García stepped up. In the midst of the worst season of his life, I can hardly describe how much of a miracle it was when he blasted a go-ahead home run to center field. Sandy went back out...

Noah Berger/Fish Stripes Today’s Marlins news roundup also includes an important update on a potential Miami trade partner. Marlins Podcast Episodes Tuesday’s winter ball updates: Javier Sanoja (Cardenales de Lara) went 1-for-5 with 1 RBI; Anthony Maldonado (Criollos de Caguas) took a loss in relief, in part because of poor defense behind him (1.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K); Norel González (Cangrejeros de Santurce) went 0-for-3. The City of Miami proclaimed that January 10, 2023 shall be known as “Sandy Alcantara Day” and mayor Francis Suarez presented...
