Atchison lands on DL with spur issue

Mets Blog | ESPN New York — USA TODAY Sports Scott Atchison has landed on the DL, with Collin McHugh taking his bullpen spot. ST. LOUIS -- Scott Atchison, who experienced numbness in his fingers while pitching Monday, has been placed on the disabled list. Assistant GM John Ricco said Atchison, who was examined Tuesday in New York by team doctor Struan Coleman, has no new structural damage. Bone spurs in the back of his pitching elbow have caused inflammation and irritated a nerve, Ricco added.

LOUIS -- Right-hander Scott Atchison experienced numbness in his fingers while pitching Monday, an alarming sign for a reliever who also experienced that symptom before learning of a tear in an elbow ligament last season. After seeking a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews while with the Boston Red Sox in 2012, Atchison elected not to have Tommy John surgery, and instead rested for two months and was able to come back in September. Now, his future is uncertain with the recurrence of the related finger numbness.

Mets Blog | ESPN New York — PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Right-hander Scott Atchison missed two months of last season with the Boston Red Sox with a torn elbow ligament, then was non-tendered in December. He since has signed a minor league deal with the Mets and is a favorite to earn a bullpen spot. Atchison feels like the five September appearances he made with the Sox after returning from the DL validated to himself and others he is capable of performing at his pre-shutdown level.
