New York Mets May 18, 2013Mets Blog | ESPN New York CHICAGO -- Scott Hairston, who slugged 20 homers in 377 at-bats with the Mets last season, indicated Friday that he did not get a strong sense the front office wanted him to re-sign with the organization. So Hairston, after stalling, eventually signed a two-year, $5 million deal with the Chicago Cubs on Feb. 10 that included bonuses based on usage. He faces the Mets in a weekend series at Wrigley Field. “I get the feeling that they wanted to go in a different direction,” Hairston told ESPNNewYork.

Gaslamp Ball Eric Stults pitched a solid game, allowing just 2 runs over 6.2 innings, but the offense was the story today. After struggling through the first 7 innings, the bats came alive in the 8th and scored 4 runs in an impressive 2-out rally. They're going to have a happy flight home. 7th Inning After six and a half scoreless innings, Scott Hairston got bored and hit a two-run shot to left field. Foulweather fans immediately turned the game off. 2-0 Cubs 8th Inning Jesus Guzman got things started with a leadoff single and Kyle Blanks followed up with a walk. With two leadoff runners on board,...

Hairston has just two hits in 24 at-bats against left-handers, but both have been home runs.

McCovey Chronicles For some reason, this game keeps coming up. Scott Hairston games can scar the psyche, apparently. It comes up now because that was the last five-game losing streak for the Giants. And it ended in a much, much more discouraging fashion. So if you want to go into hey-this-stuff-happens mode, you can note that this stuff most certainly does happen, even in the best of seasons. Show of hands if you're in hey-this-stuff-happens mode. Right. Didn't think so. No, you're probably in scorched-earth mode, where everything is horrible and the Giants are horrible and Jason Marquis is horrible but ...

Cincinnati Reds April 23, 2013Chicago Cubs Blog | ESPN Chicago CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum is sticking with his mostly right-handed lineup when his team begins a three-game interleague series against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. Chicago Cubs March 8, 2013Chicago Cubs Blog | ESPN Chicago MESA, Ariz. -- Chicago Cubs outfielder Scott Hairston knows all too well what Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin is going through. Melvin was bitten by a scorpion Wednesday night sending him to the hospital for three hours. Hairston was stung by one back in 2010. "It was early, before taking the kids to school," Hairston said Thursday morning before the Cubs played the White Sox. "I stepped outside in my sandals and it felt like I was stepping on glass.

Gaslamp Ball As I'm sure you're well aware, the San Diego Padres have never had a player hit for the cycle. It's a distinction they share with only the Florida/ Miami Marlins- a franchise which hasn't existed half as long. The Pads also haven't had a no-hitter, but that's a subject for another day. I saw something about Scott Hairston's cycle from last season and got to wondering how many players who were Padres at one point or another have hit for the cycle with another team. After perusing the list of all the players who have accomplished the feat, I found sixteen players who fit the bill. Nine of...
San Diego Padres March 2, 2013Mets Blog | ESPN New York PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- As Andres Torres, Scott Hairston and Kirk Nieuwenhuis all nursed injuries last March, the Mets seriously had to weigh center-field prospect Matt den Dekker breaking camp on the Opening Day roster. It ultimately did not materialize because Torres and Hairston came north (although Torres became reinjured in the opener). Adam Rubin Center field prospect Matt den Dekker may make his major league debut in 2013. “They told me it was a possibility if there were injuries, but it was definitely a long shot,” said den Dekker, a fifth-round pick in 2010 from the University...
New York Mets February 19, 2013The Cub Reporter Last week, the Cubs outrighted Tony Campana off thier 40-man to make room for Scott Hairston. Today, the Diamondbacks agreed to give up two pitchers for the speedster...RHP Erick Leal and RHP Jesus Castillo. Judging by the quality going out, I wouldn't expect much on the quality coming in, but maybe the Cubs unearth one of those diamonds in the rough. Leal, a 6'3" righty out of Venezuela, will be playing his age 18 season and Castillo is a 6'2" righty also out of Venezuela and will be playing his age 17 season. In both cases, plenty of time for them to learn the "Cubs Way." Nick Piecoro had b...
