Injured Giles decides to retire

San Diego Union-Tribune — The reaction on Scott Hairston’s face was one of disbelief. “Really,” the center fielder said when told yesterday that former Padre Brian Giles had announced his retirement just down the road in the spring training camp of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

San Diego Union-Tribune — In the middle of a steady rain, there was one ray of sunlight yesterday in Peoria, Ariz. Scott Hairston was only bruised Saturday when struck on the back of his left hand by a pitched ball.
