Ramiro Peña finds his ‘rhythm’ with Giants

Perhaps buried behind the Giants’ rash of wins is the emergence of backup infielder In six games (three starts) since his contract was purchased June 10 from Triple-A Sacramento, Peña is batting .471 (8-for-17) with four RBIs and two runs. A switch-hitter known for his defensive versatility, Peña thrived for the River Cats before getting summoned two weeks ago to San Francisco. Cain will likely have a rehab assignment, something he skipped during his first stint on the disabled list. … Bochy said reliever Sergio Romo, who has been out since April 10 with a forearm injury, could...

Giants notes: Sergio Romo doesn't pitch well, but appears to be healthy after Triple-A game for Sacramento

SAN FRANCISCO _ The end result was less than impressive, but Sergio Romo apparently came out of rehab appearance for Triple-A Sacramento none the worse for wear. Romo took the loss for the River Cats Thursday night, giving up two… Continue Reading → The post Giants notes: Sergio Romo doesn't pitch well, but appears to be healthy after Triple-A game for Sacramento appeared first on Giants Extra.

Sergio Romo rehab winding up, will return to Giants soon

Sergio Romo rehab winding up, will return to Giants soon ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — On the mound in the sixth inning was Sergio Romo. At the plate was the Dodgers’ Yasiel Puig, both rehabbing injuries for their clubs’ California League teams. Romo struck out Puig, who was the “beer batter,” which meant half-price suds for the 4,247 fans, at least those over 21. Romo was starting his second minor-league rehab assignment in a bid to return from an elbow injury that has kept him on the disabled list since April 11. Romo’s dominance against right-handed hitters — Puig is 1-for-10...

Giants notes: Sergio Romo makes headway (and strikes out Yasiel Puig), etc.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Giants are wearing 1970s throwback jerseys Saturday night, with the Tampa Bay Rays celebrating a Turn Back the Clock night.   Sorry, Rays, you can't turn it back to the 2008 draft and take back your… Continue Reading → The post Giants notes: Sergio Romo makes headway (and strikes out Yasiel Puig), etc. appeared first on Giants Extra.

The Giants shouldn't get injured so much

It's just a bad decision The Giants have had a bad run of injuries this year, with Sergio Romo, Matt Cain, Angel Pagan, and Hunter Pence all on the DL. Now Buster Posey is hurt as well, and while the word is that he'll play tomorrow, we can't know that for sure. All these injuries have led the Giants to play different players, which is bad for the team because if those players were better than the now injured players, they'd have been starting in the first place! Therefore, I think it was a bad idea for all these Giants players to get injured. Just think about it for a moment. Take just...

On Peavy’s big night, a Giants reliever enjoyed his own slice of redemption

On Peavy’s big night, a Giants reliever enjoyed his own slice of redemption ATLANTA - To those unaware of the history, it looked like a nondescript scoreless inning on a night that otherwise belonged to Jake Peavy. In 2012 he established himself as a big-league reliever with a 1.80 ERA in 32 games. Recalling that terrible day in Lakeland, Gearrin said, That was the last time I pitched in a Braves uniform. The longer Sergio Romo remains out with an elbow injury, the more opportunity Gearrin will get, and he could become a setup mainstay next year and beyond. Manager Bruce Bochy...

Giants notes: A setback for Sergio Romo, a trio of birthdays, plus injury updates on Matt Duffy, Matt Cain, Angel Pagan, etc.

ATLANTA – Sergio Romo’s return to the Giants bullpen is no longer right around the corner.   The veteran right-handed reliever had a setback in his rehab from a strained flexor tendon near his right elbow, Giants manager Bruce Bochy… Continue Reading → The post Giants notes: A setback for Sergio Romo, a trio of birthdays, plus injury updates on Matt Duffy, Matt Cain, Angel Pagan, etc. appeared first on Giants Extra.

Giants’ Chris Stratton impresses with scoreless inning in debut

Giants’ Chris Stratton impresses with scoreless inning in debut ATLANTA — Toward the end of Monday’s 5-3 Braves victory, a large contingent of Giants fans riled the home crowd with a very loud “Let’s go, Giants” chant. Only a handful were related to Southerner Chris Stratton, who struck out two of his three hitters in his big-league debut. Stratton’s arrival took longer than he or the Giants hoped when they selected him from Mississippi State. “He was impressive,” manager Bruce Bochy said. The kid went out there and looked comfortable. Sergio Romo is completing a...

Giants notes: It's Samardzija vs. Foltynewicz, rehab schedule changes for Sergio Romo, a farewell to Turner Field, Braves organist readies his playlist, etc.

ATLANTA – The Giants are sending Jeff Samardzija to face the Braves’ Mike Foltynewicz here at Turner Field, so let’s just amend the rules of baseball.   First team to use all seven tiles wins.   The Giants could be… Continue Reading → The post Giants notes: It's Samardzija vs. Foltynewicz, rehab schedule changes for Sergio Romo, a farewell to Turner Field, Braves organist readies his playlist, etc. appeared first on Giants Extra.
