The New Final Piece

Seth Smith was never meant for the label The Final Piece, given to him by over-confident former GM Josh Byrnes after acquiring Smith from the A’s last winter in exchange for Luke Gregerson. He ended up being a nice piece to add, like many Josh Byrnes acquisitions that didn’t actually add wins to the team record, but he was never going to be good enough to carry the offense like he needed to, no matter how well he played. Smith ended up being the only piece of that 2014 outfield worth a damn, finishing the year with a team leading 133 ... Read the full post

Seth Smith for Brandon Maurer trade is FRESH!

The trade that brings pitcher Brandon Maurer to the Padres from Seattle for OF Seth Smith looks like a win-win.  The Mariners are getting more of a proven piece in Seth Smith, but the Padres might just be getting a player with more upside in Maurer.  I've read conflicting reports theorizing that Maurer may or may not get to start but he's sure to see time in the bullpen. I like this trade enough and even though the reviews have come back 100% fresh, it's done with a shoulder shrug. New Mariners’ outfielder Seth Smith knew a trade was likely

Smith noted San Diego’s off-season moves and said, `A lot of times, you can put two and two together.’

Seth Smith

Of all the things that happened in Seth Smith's life over the last 48 hours, being traded to the Mariners might have been the easiest thing for him to predict. Because sitting at his home in Madison, Mississippi on Wednesday afternoon, and watching his alma mater Ole Miss - a team he once played quarterback for - get demolished by Texas Christian, 42-3, in the Peach Bowl was not at all expected. "That was awful," he said with a long pause. Then with a chuckle, he added: "Next question." The next questions were about joining the Mariners - a much better subject to discuss. On Tuesday, Seattle...

New Mariners’ outfielder Seth Smith knew a trade was likely

This was no surprise. Veteran outfielder Seth Smith figured he was headed out of San Diego in the days prior to Tuesday’s deal that sent him to the Mariners for reliever Brandon Maurer. Smith watched the Padres, under new general manager A.J. Preller, overhaul the club’s outfield in recent weeks through trades that netted Matt Kemp, Wil Myers and Justin Upton. “Obviously, I paid attention to what the Padres were doing,” Smith said Wednesday in a conference call from him home near Jackson, Miss. “A lot of times, you can put two and two together. “You never know … Read...

The Final Piece Departs

Last summer when the Padres extended outfielder Seth Smith without a full-time general manager in place, I wrote: The problem, like Dave Cameron said yesterday, is the opportunity cost. There are only so many roster spots and, more specifically, so many outfielders that can play in one game. Like Hundley, Smith might end up getting in the way of a youngster like Rymer Liriano or, soon enough, Hunter Renfroe. Smith seems more like a guy you want to bring in to a ready-to-contend situation as a, wait for it, … Final Piece. And the Padres probably aren’t there yet. Who would have thought ...

Mariners acquire Seth Smith in exchange for Brandon Maurer

The Mariners have completed their corner outfield platoon by adding Seth Smith from the Padres in exchange for Brandon Maurer. The Mariners may have balked at the asking price for Justin Upton, Matt Kemp, and others, but they've solved their outfield solution by acquiring Seth Smith from the Padres in exchange for Brandon Maurer. Smith, 32, is coming off a near-career year in which he posted 2.6 WAR in a heavily platooned role for San Diego, spread across 521 PA. In the two years previous to that, Smith combined for 2.3 WAR in Oakland over 851 PA, all equally platooned. Smith represents a...

Mariners close to deal to acquire outfielder Seth Smith from San Diego

SEATTLE — The Mariners appear poised to close out the year by acquiring veteran outfielder Seth Smith from San Diego in a deal that would tick off the final major item on their winter shopping list. Multiple sources with both clubs says the two sides are close to a trade that would send a reliever to the Padres for Smith, a left-handed hitter who projects as a platoon partner with Justin Ruggiano in right field. San Diego is believed to be pushing for right-hander Brandon Maurer in the swap, but sources say the Mariners prefer to trade away another reliever. … Read more »
