Quadruple-A Baseball: Smith Should Be An All-Star

The Padres just signed Seth Smith to a contract extension for two more years. Does he deserve it? Absolutely. He has been the sole consistent bat in the Padres’ lineup throughout the year. He leads the team in home runs (9), RBI (25), walks (38), average (.282), on-base percentage (.386) and doubles (18). It is […] Quadruple-A Baseball: Smith Should Be An All-Star - Friars on Base - Friars on Base - A San Diego Padres Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

The (sort of) Puzzling Seth Smith Extension

The year is 2026. After a 10 year run of dominance in the National League West by the San Diego Padres, Jonah Keri has completed his fifth bestseller — Friar Fever: How Farhan Zaidi Took the Forgettable San Diego Padres from Cellar-Dwellers to the Top of the Baseball World. Consider this passage, from the first chapter: … Josh Byrnes was ousted after two-and-a-half years of mediocrity, as the 2014 Padres seemed destined by late-June for a third straight mid-70s win tally. His reign was more incomplete than it was ugly, however, and he didn’t leave the cupboard completely dry. Seth...

Seth Smith signing is rotten, so far

The reviews are still coming in but I thought I'd just give you a sample of the hot takes while they're still hot.  I'm personally going to consider this signing "FRESH".  I think the Padres have lost confidence in their ability to trade talent for prospects or at least I've lost confidence in them.  So the best bet is just to keep the talent if they can. Seth Smith has been carrying this sh_t Padres team on his back all season long.  He's like one of those weird parrot guys that let's his bird shit all over his back in public places and doesn't even care or acknowledge the fact that...

Padres Sign Seth Smith For Two More Years

Padres Sign Seth Smith For Two More Years

The man leading the Padres offense has signed a two-year contract worth at least $13 million. When Josh Byrnes sent Luke Gregerson to Oakland in exchange for Seth Smith, the reaction was not very kind. Obviously, that negativity seems silly in hindsight. Not only was Gregerson replaced with the more than capable Joaquin Benoit, but Smith has been the most dangerous bat in the (admittedly historically bad) lineup. His .281 batting average beats out runner up Chris Denorfia by more than 30 points, and he leads the team in doubles, triples, and home runs. He does all of that while also being...

BREAKING NEWS: Padres Extend Seth Smith

The San Diego Padres have announced that the team has extended outfielder Seth Smith through the 2016 season, with an option for the 2017 season. This coming as more and more rumors begin to circulate that Smith was one of the trading chips the team was looking to move.   Ron Fowler announced on #PadresSH […] BREAKING NEWS: Padres Extend Seth Smith - Friars on Base - Friars on Base - A San Diego Padres Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Padres 8, Reds 2: Seth Smith Leads Surging Offense

Padres 8, Reds 2: Seth Smith Leads Surging Offense

Ian Kennedy has pitched solidly this season, but like most of the Padres' rotation, hasn't had much run support, averaging 2.4 runs per game. Tonight was a little different, as the offense rained destruction on Cincinnati pitching. With Seth Smith leading the way, the team scored 8 runs on a season high 16 hits. Every single starter picked up at least a base knock, including Kennedy himself. Four players had multi-hit games, and Smith and Carlos Quentin both homered, Smith to the Jack Deck, Quentin to the Western Metal Building. With run support like that, Kennedy could have taken it easy,...
