Kelley & Claiborne step up, solidify middle relief

River Ave. Blues — For the first few weeks of the season, the Yankees bullpen was a bit of a mess. Specifically, the non-David Robertson and Mariano Rivera part of the bullpen was a mess. The trio of Joba Chamberlain, Boone Logan, and Shawn Kelley combined to allow 31 base-runners and 13 runs in 17.1 innings during the first [...]Post from: River Ave. Blues A New York Yankees blogKelley & Claiborne step up, solidify middle relief

Don’t count out Shawn Kelley quite yet

The LoHud Yankees Blog | Journal NewsJoba Chamberlain might not be on the disabled list much longer, and Preston Claiborne has pitched pretty well, and Shawn Kelley’s 6.14 ERA makes him pretty easy to dismiss. But don’t count him out just yet. “I think his arm strength has been more consistent,” Joe Girardi said. “You’re seeing the velocity out of his [...]The post Don’t count out Shawn Kelley quite yet appeared first on The LoHud Yankees Blog.

Postgame notes: Kelley and the bats

Yankees Blog | ESPN New York — KANSAS CITY -- The New York Yankees' bats came alive Friday night, pounding out eight extra-base hits in their 11-6 victory over the Kansas City Royals. This comes a day after completing a series against the Colorado Rockies in Denver in which they managed a total of six runs in three games. "Sometimes baseball doesn't make sense," manager Joe Girardi said. Not much to add to that. But not all the highlights were offensive: • Reliever Shawn Kelley, a crucial piece of the puzzle with Joba Chamberlain on the disabled list and neither Mariano Rivera nor David Robertson available on Friday, pi...

Mo finds relief after 8 shutout

New York Post — The gem of a game was three outs from being over when Yoenis Cespedes whistled a single to left field off Shawn Kelley. Seemingly before the ball stopped rolling, Joe Girardi was on his way to the mound and calling for Mariano Rivera. It made no difference the Yankees were...

Mariano Rivera gives up a run

Mariners minor league report, April 28, 2013: Abe Almonte hits for the cycle

Mariners Insider | Tacoma News-Tribune — The  Rainiers bats were hot in Las Vegas. And Michael Saunders had a triple in his rehab outing. Abe Almonte, who the Mariners acquired from the Yankees for Shawn Kelley, hit for the cycle in Jackson’s win 13-1 win.  Chris Harris – the voice of the Generals - writes that Taijuan Walker has shown enough early in the season to deserve a call-up to Triple A Tacoma. High Desert got beat 17-7 …. their offense in the red zone just wasn’t good. Clinton pounded out 18 hits in a win.  … Read more »

Postgame notes: Kelley, Rivera and Wells

Yankees Blog | ESPN New York — TORONTO -- OK, so Hiroki Kuroda pitched 7 1/3 strong innings, Joba Chamberlain and Boone Logan each got two key outs, and Mariano Rivera picked up his fifth save of the season. But who got the win on Saturday? If you said Shawn Kelley, give yourself a prize. The little-used right-handed middle reliever walked off with the W, and rightfully so, after coming into the bottom of the 10th inning with the winning run on second base and getting two tough hitters, Rajai Davis and Melky Cabrera, to end the inning.

Another Reason to be Dismayed by the Bullpen

Lookout Landing — As Logan noted last week, the Mariners have made a transition in their bullpen strategy from general skill sets to specialized ones, jettisoning such steady characters as Shawn Kelley and Paul Spoljaric. One of the costs to such an approach was made numerically evident on Wednesday, when Kameron Loe appeared on television for about fifteen more pitches than he should have. But there's a second, more insidious repercussion stemming from the new bullpen. Enjoy this bleak and not altogether unsurprising graph: Correlation is not causation! It isn't. But in this case, we're talking about ...

Here's an interesting twist involving ex-Mariners relievers

Seattle Times — Duting their time in Seattle, former Mariners relief pitchers David Aardsma and Shawn Kelley were part of a close-knit bullpen fraternity in 2009 and 2010 stewarded by ex-coach John Wetteland. Interestingly enough, Wetteland had won his only World Series ring as a Yankees closer and the Big Apple is

New York Post — WASHINGTON — Saying David Aardsma “didn’t really fit in,” the Yankees designated the veteran right-handed reliever for assignment after yesterday’s 4-2 exhibition win over the Nationals. Shawn Kelley, who was claimed off waivers earlier in the spring, will make the team in the bullpen. “We wanted more distance and...

  • The Mariners' Bullpen and Specialization
In the last calendar year, the Mariners have traded three relievers: Brandon League, Shawn Kelley, and Steve Delabar. League was excised from the roster because he was a closer and also terrible, so that doesn't really fit with the narrative here, but I'm a sportswriter now so I feel entirely justified in ignoring data points because they don't fit with my narratives. Anyways. Kelley and Delabar are the subjects of interest here. The Mariners never really seemed to like either of them, demoting them more often than they demoted other relievers and ultimately trading them for less-than-...

The break from Ryan Divish: #Mariners RHP Shawn Kelley has been traded to the Yankees for minor league OF Abraham Almonte ... here's BR page bit.ly/11HoEZL — Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) February 14, 2013 Almonte is a switch-hitting center fielder with a lot of speed, some decent idea of the strike zone in the lower minor leagues and pretty much no power. He'll be 24 in baseball years this 2013 season and last year was his first taste of Double-A ball. Basically, he's Minor League detritus. • Mariners trade Shawn Kelley to the Yankees for minor league outfielder Abraham Almonte
The Mariners have traded right-handed reliever Shawn Kelley to the New York Yankees for minor league outfielder Abraham Almonte. After designating Kelley for assignment to make room for Kelly Shoppach, the Mariners had 10 days to either trade, release or outright him. Kelley, who has value as a reliever, wasn’t going to clear waivers, so instead of losing him without a return, the Mariners picked up Almonte to add to their organizational depth. Almonte, 23, played 78 games for Double A Trenton, hitting .276 with 17 doubles, four triples, four homers and 25 RBI with 30 stolen bases. He posted …...
  • Kameron Loe Giant, Nearby
Not long ago, the Seattle Mariners designated Shawn Kelley for assignment, because the Mariners decided there was something about Kelley that offsets the fact that he's good at pitching. Where that's removing one 2013 bullpen candidate, though, it looks like we can add another in Kelley's place. Here's this nugget of wonder: Add 6-ft-8, 245-lb Kameron Loe to SEA non-roster pitching invites. Must pass physical. • Mariners Sign Kelly Shoppach, DFA Shawn Kelley
The Mariners have signed Kelly Shoppach to be the backup and defensive replacement catcher. To make room on the 40-man roster, they have designated Shawn Kelley for assignment. If the Internet is to be believed -- and I see no reason to think it shouldn't, all of the time -- Jack Zduriencik hinted over the weekend that the next week could bring a significant move, for the Seattle Mariners. It's no secret that the Mariners aren't finished with their offseason, and while "significant move" makes people daydream about the likes of Giancarlo Stanton, what's more likely is that the Mariners...

Official news: #Mariners officially sign catcher Kelly Shoppach to Major League contract. RHP Shawn Kelley designated for assignment. — Seattle Mariners (@Mariners) February 7, 2013 For some time now the team has acted very sour on Shawn Kelley. I couldn't tell you why. His performance record is excellent. I don't want to condemn it as fact, but it seems to me that their dislike is rooted in his personality, clubhouse demeanor or something of that sort. That bums me out because deciding to discard useful players solely because of some perceived or intangible fault has been exactly ...
