Skip Schumaker pitches in relief in blowout loss

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Dodgers infielder Skip Schumaker made his second career pitching appearance Monday against the Rockies, taking the mound in the ninth inning of a 12-2 loss.  "It's a tough situation because you're getting your butt kicked and you try not to have too good of a time out there because you're down by [10]," said Schumaker, who pitched some in college, per MLB.com. "But you don't get too many chances for that. I remember growing up watching Orel [Hershiser] pitch, so I was on the same mound as Orel. That was pretty cool." Carpenter ahead of schedule

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Cardinals utility man Matt Carpenter continues to work towards competing for the second base job and coach Jose Oquendo says he's slightly ahead of the schedule Skip Schumaker was on back in 2009 when he converted from the outfield to 2B, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “It isn’t that big of a surprise,” Oquendo said. “Schumaker did great on routine plays. But Schumaker had a tough time reading balls off the bat because of being in the outfield. (Carpenter) has been an infielder (third base, first base) almost all his time. He can read balls a lot better.”
