At last, some positive surprises

Nats Insider | CSN Washington — Associated PressRarely does a team enjoy a successful season receiving contributions only from those players who were expected all along to do it.Look no further than the 2012 Nationals, who won 98 games not only behind the star power of Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez, Ryan Zimmerman and Jordan Zimmermann but also thanks to the unlikely performances of rookies Tyler Moore, Steve Lombardozzi and — yes — Bryce Harper. None of those players was being counted on to play a major role when that season began. All wound up becoming critical to an NL East title. Why has the 2013 season been such a disa...

Nationals 3, Mets 2: Steve Lombardozzi finishes off ninth-inning rally with winning sac fly

Washington Post — In one corner of the Washington Nationals’ clubhouse, the locker that formerly belonged to Danny Espinosa had been vacated. Across the room, Henry Rodriguez stuffed belongings into a blue duffel bag. Jayson Werth emerged from the kitchen, walked across the room and hugged a coach. Game #58 Recap: Nats Complete Comeback With Walk-off

Citizens of Natstown — By: Madeline Dell'Aria In Jayson Werth’s return, Jordan Zimmermann had a strong 8 inning performance allowing two unearned runs, but it took a ninth inning comeback including a walk-off sac-fly from Steve Lombardozzi for the Nats to pull out the victory. The Nats took a 1-0 lead in the second with Ian Desmond’s homerun to left field, the Nationals first of four hits in the game. Jordan Zimmerman pitched eight innings allowing 4 hits, striking out 4 while walking none. Davey on Espinosa & Lombo; injury updates

Nats Insider | CSN Washington — Photo by USA TodayBALTIMORE — When Danny Espinosa needed a week to rest his wrist after discovering a loose bone chip was causing pain and inflammation, Steve Lombardozzi filled in quite nicely as the Nationals' starting second baseman. In five starts from May 24-28, Lombardozzi went 6-for-20 with four RBI, two doubles, and three runs. Washington saw a spark they perhaps hadn't seen quite yet from Espinosa who holds a .163 average through 40 games. But despite performing well as a replacement, Lombardozzi was sent back to the bench when Espinosa returned. Manager Davey Johnson said he wants to s...

Deleting the Adjectives: Tyler Moore

Citizens of Natstown — Sometimes when looking at the complex mathematical formulas that go into the new advanced stats it is hard to remember that at their root is the game of baseball. One time I was debating the merits of Steve Lombardozzi and Danny Espinosa and was accused of only liking Espinosa more because he had a higher WAR. When I laid out that in fact I liked him because of his superior power, base running and defense I got the odd response that those were all components of WAR. What the person I was discussing this with seemed to forget was that these are also components of baseball. Numbers are not the...

Lombardozzi shines in Nats' win vs. Phillies

Nats Insider | CSN Washington — Photo by USA TodayAsk Steve Lombardozzi to do just about anything for his baseball team and he’ll do it. Since his debut with the Nats in 2011 he’s played second base, third base, shortstop, and left field. Last year when catchers were going down left and right, Davey Johnson said he would call on the Columbia, Md. native as the emergency backstop if the situation ever presented itself. So when it was discovered Danny Espinosa would be out at least a few days with a floating chip in his right wrist, naturally Lombardozzi was there to step in. The super utility man known as ‘Lombo’ made the most...

USA Today Sports ImagesThe Nats and Dodgers meet again tonight in Los Angeles.OK, 10 bucks to anyone who correctly predicted the Nationals, on May 14, would be starting an outfield of Steve Lombardozzi, Eury Perez and Tyler Moore. Such is life when Bryce Harper and Jayson Werth are injured and Denard Span gets a night off against one of the toughest lefties in baseball: Clayton Kershaw.Though Harper didn't suffer any major injuries in his collision with the wall last night, he probably needs a night (or two) off. Knowing him, I'm sure he'll be trying to convince Davey Johnson he can pinch-hit ...

Something was amiss with Eric Kressin's swing. The baseball was squirting off the bat, not flying off of it. Kressin, a junior, took hacks in the auxiliary gym at Good Counsel High during an open gym session last week with fellow prospective baseball players.
