A’s send Kendall Graveman out with Stephen Piscotty’s return

BOSTON - Kendall Graveman’s return to the A’s proved to be a quick one: He subbed in for Trevor Cahill for one start and was sent back out Tuesday to make room for Stephen Piscotty to come off the bereavement list. Cahill, who had a minor elbow impingement, will come off the disabled list after the minimum 10 days on Wednesday to start against Boston. Outfielder Jake Smolinski is the most likely player to be sent out to make room for Cahill; the A’s currently have six outfielders and Smolinski has not had much playing time since Mark Canha showed he could handle...

Trevor Cahill likely to start Wednesday for A’s

BOSTON - Trevor Cahill’s elbow impingement was so minor that the right-hander is likely to come off the disabled list to start Wednesday night’s game at Fenway Park. “We feel pretty good about starting him,” manager Bob Melvin said. “We have not made that decision yet but based on what I’m hearing and how he came through his bullpen session, I think we’re in a good spot to start him.” The corresponding roster move could be interesting. Brett Anderson has had the worst recent numbers among the candidates to come out of the rotation, but he...

A’s Trevor Cahill still not quite 100 percent with elbow issue

NEW YORK - Manager Bob Melvin said that starter Trevor Cahill’s status is still up in the air. Cahill, who is out with a minor elbow impingement, threw an “up-and-down” bullpen session Sunday, with a simulated inning break. “We’re still trying to figure out where we’re going with that,” Melvin said. “He felt pretty good but not 100 percent at this point.” Melvin said that the team will have a better idea how much time Cahill might miss on Monday. Initially, it was thought he might just miss the minimum 10 days on the disabled list. ...

A’s Kendall Graveman dealing with sore shin, other injury updates

NEW YORK - A’s manager Bob Melvin said that Kendall Graveman was limping a bit still Saturday after taking a line drive off his right shin Friday night, “but he’s a tough guy,” Melvin said. Melvin said Graveman’s side session Sunday is a little up in the air; it could be switched to Monday if necessary. “We’ve got a little time to figure that out,” Melvin said. Graveman is being used as a spot starter with Trevor Cahill on the DL with a minor elbow impingement. The plan for the rotation when Cahill returns in the middle of May...

Kendall Graveman to rejoin A’s to pitch at Yankee Stadium

Kendall Graveman’s time at Triple-A Nashville was short: The right-hander will rejoin the A’s Friday night to start the opener of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium. Graveman, who is 0-5 with an 8.89 ERA, made two starts with Nashville after being demoted last month, and he allowed 19 hits, including two homers, four walks and eight runs in 12 innings. He was sent down to work on his reconfigured delivery - he’s not going over his head in the windup - and on his improved changeup. The A’s need a spot start because of Trevor Cahill’s minor elbow...

A’s call up Dustin Fowler, place Trevor Cahill on DL

The A’s called up center fielder Dustin Fowler on Wednesday, meaning he should finally get his long-awaited first at-bat in the big leagues. Fowler, 23, takes the roster spot of pitcher Trevor Cahill, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to May 6 with a right elbow impingement. Fowler was batting .300 with three homers, 16 RBIs and eight steals in 30 games for Triple-A Nashville and was on a tear of late, hitting .370 in his past 14 games. He was one of three prospects acquired in the July trade that sent Sonny Gray to the Yankees. ...

Cahill, Anderson buoy A’s injury-riddled rotation

With Trevor Cahill coming off Saturday’s 12-strikeout performance and Brett Anderson scheduled to take the mound with a 2.84 earned-run average Monday, A’s manager Bob Melvin joked that the team might be in the market for some more retreads. “You get an Anderson, you get a Cahill, and we’ll probably go after (Mark) Mulder at some point and see if (Barry) Zito will make a comeback,” Melvin said. “It’s a little bit of a back to the future here, but these guys are pitching well.” Anderson, who was originally acquired by Oakland in the 2007 Dan...

Another A’s reunion: Brett Anderson expected to start Wednesday

SEATTLE — Brett Anderson is expected to rejoin the A’s rotation and start on Wednesday, the team’s latest Turn Back the Clock Day. Anderson is in the A’s clubhouse at Safeco Field, where they open a three-game series against the Mariners on Tuesday night. The lefty will be reunited with Trevor Cahill as 40 percent of the rotation, similar to their days in a previous era. They were A’s teammates from 2009 to 2013 and returned this year as a couple of 30-year-olds, both signing minor-league contracts. Anderson is replacing Opening Day...

A’s mistakes help Astros win 8-4, take series

HOUSTON - The difference between an assured, accomplished team such as the champion Astros and the young up-and-coming A’s is that the wheels can still come off in a disastrous inning for Oakland. And so it was Sunday at Minute Maid Park, where a tie game quickly turned into an 8-4 Houston win thanks to a series of Oakland mistakes in the seventh inning that led to the A’s first series loss in two weeks. The A’s got another quality start from Trevor Cahill, who went six innings and allowed four runs, three earned. But Cahill’s last act before leaving...

Input from teammates helps A’s Kendall Graveman try to get back on course

ARLINGTON, Texas - In his quest to right his season, Kendall Graveman is turning to lots of teammates from help. Jonathan Lucroy had a long exchange of ideas with Graveman at the team hotel in Seattle and among other things, the catcher suggested using his changeup more. Then Trevor Cahill taught Graveman his changeup grip, and it seems to be working; the pitch was much improved Graveman’s last time out, and Graveman said he’s been closely watching Cahill, who has a similar arsenal. Outfielder Matt Joyce then stood in while Graveman threw his bullpen session in...
