Chicago Cubs: What the numbers tell us about Tyler Chatwood

Lots of strikeouts and a staggering number of walks. That’s about the extent of Tyler Chatwood in a Chicago Cubs uniform here in mid-April. If Tyler Chatwood ever learns to control his pitches and harness his stuff, the Chicago Cubs will put the rest of the league on notice. But, three starts in, that’s a very […] Chicago Cubs: What the numbers tell us about Tyler Chatwood - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - A Chicago Cubs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Cardinals 5, Cubs 3: Walkathon

Cardinals 5, Cubs 3: Walkathon

A Javier Baez home run was not enough to win this one. In the first three innings of the Cubs’ 5-3 loss to the Cardinals Tuesday night, 29 batters came to the plate, combined between the two teams. Just 10 of those 29 batters put the ball in play, because starters Tyler Chatwood and Adam Wainwright were issuing lots and lots of walks, and striking out hitters as well on a cold night at Wrigley Field. Chatwood’s lack of command cost him a pair of runs. He walked the first two batters in the second but struck out the side, but when he did the walk thing again in the third, Matt Carpenter...

Grading the Cubs starters: A sigh of relief

Grading the Cubs starters: A sigh of relief

And some encouraging peripherals. The second time through the (starting pitching) order was the inverse of the first time. It wasn’t perfect. Kyle Hendricks got knocked around a little bit, Tyler Chatwood got knocked around even more. But I for one breathed a sigh of relief that all of the starters now have a decent start under their belt. Honestly, minus the Hendricks start, I think this was a lot closer to what the Cubs thought they were getting with this rotation. I mean, three quality starts, three wins, and 29 strikeouts makes for a pretty fantastic week of baseball. The Cubs are...

Pirates 8, Cubs 5: We waited an extra day for this?

Pirates 8, Cubs 5: We waited an extra day for this?

The Cubs dropped their home opener. Okay, so maybe the Pirates are better than I thought they were. The Cubs’ home opener, delayed a day by snow, wound up in an 8-5 loss to the Pirates, who are now off to an 8-2 start. Things started off well. After a 1-2-3 first by Tyler Chatwood, the Cubs started hitting Pirates starter Ivan Nova. Singles by Kris Bryant and Willson Contreras put runners on first and second, and that brought up Kyle Schwarber: .@Pirates challenge call that Wilson Contreras is safe at 3B in the 1st; call overturned, runner is out.Powered by @Mitel....

Quintana, bullpen lead Cubs past Brewers 3-0

Quintana, bullpen lead Cubs past Brewers 3-0

News flash: the Cubs have a really good rotation. WP: Jose Quintana (1-0); LP: Chase Anderson (0-1); Save: Brandon Morrow (2) Home runs: Chi - Zobrist (1); Mil - none Get yer Box Score here! For those of you who didn’t pay attention this off season, the Chicago Cubs (5-4) have put together a darn good rotation. Today the Cubs had lefty Jose Quintana on the hill, and he was as tough as Yu Darvish was yesterday or Jon Lester was Thursday. The only pitcher that showed any chinks was Kyle Hendricks, and he had just one bad inning. The Brewers didn’t face Tyler Chatwood, the Cubs' #5...

Cubs win on National Beer Day, a budding rivalry, and other bullets and tweets and stuff W Javier Baez scares EVERYBODY when he's on the base path. Inspired by Cooler by the Lake and Len Kasper, to whom all the credit should go. I’ll take the blame. Enjoy. Or not. Less filling! It was seemingly yesterday when we discussed Tyler Chatwood’s really high release...

Chicago Cubs News: Chatwood’s first start; Lester’s velocity a concern?

The first start for the Chicago Cubs’ Tyler Chatwood was an unusual one–but not all that surprising. And how about Jon Lester’s drop in velocity? Should the Cubs be concerned about it? The Chicago Cubs‘ Tyler Chatwood put together a mixed bag of results that lead to a 1-0 loss. His six walks were a […] Chicago Cubs News: Chatwood’s first start; Lester’s velocity a concern? - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - A Chicago Cubs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Chicago Cubs: Tyler Chatwood’s first start was odd, but also expected

Tyler Chatwood was the last current Chicago Cubs starter to pitch in this young season. It was an odd performance, to say the least, but still overall effective. The season debut for Chicago Cubs starter Tyler Chatwood was strange, yet, somewhat expected in a funny way. Overall he was able to hold the Reds to one […] Chicago Cubs: Tyler Chatwood’s first start was odd, but also expected - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - A Chicago Cubs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Chicago Cubs: Offense dead silent as Tyler Chatwood flirts with disaster

The Chicago Cubs managed just two base hits in a 2-0 loss to the Cincinnati Reds as frustrations continue to mount with fans – despite being just five games in. For the second time in as many days, the Chicago Cubs offense failed to tally a run. Rookie starter Tyler Mahle limited Chicago to just […] Chicago Cubs: Offense dead silent as Tyler Chatwood flirts with disaster - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - A Chicago Cubs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Chris Coghlan signs minor-league deal with the Cubs

Chris Coghlan signs minor-league deal with the Cubs

That really was him in the sim game on Wednesday. SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — When I went to see Tyler Chatwood throw in a simulated game with Cubs minor leaguers Wednesday, the last thing I expected to see was a major league free agent taking at-bats and working out with the team. But it sure looked like former Cub Chris Coghlan playing in that game, and Thursday we received confirmation: Chris Coghlan has signed a minor-league deal with the #Cubs and started working out at their Arizona complex, as @bleedcubbieblue spotted. Coghlan, a veteran outfielder from the 2016 World Series team, will...

Tyler Chatwood throws in an intrasquad sim game in Mesa

It was the righthander’s final tuneup for the 2018 season. MESA, Arizona — While Tyler Chatwood’s Cubs teammates played two exhibition games against the Red Sox in Fort Myers and then traveled to Miami for an off day before Opening Day against the Marlins, Chatwood stayed behind in Mesa to throw a sim game in front of about 15 curious onlookers at Field 1 at the Sloan Park complex. This came about due to the off day. The Cubs’ other four starters all had a “tuneup” start in their final spring outing, throwing about three or four innings or 60 pitches, but Chatwood’s turn fell...
