Chicago Cubs vs. Cincinnati Reds preview, Sunday 6/24, 12:10 CT

The Cubs need a win to avoid being swept. ICYMI: Mike Montgomery to start today for the Cubs as Tyler Chatwood’s wife is in labor.— Jesse Rogers (@ESPNChiCubs) June 24, 2018 All best wishes to Tyler Chatwood and his wife on their upcoming arrival. Now, how about some positive things about the Cubs leading into today’s game? Despite recent offensive struggles, the Cubs still rank second in the N.L. at 4.77 runs per game. Despite recent pitching struggles, the Cubs still rank second in the N.L. at 3.65 runs allowed per game. At 42-32 with 353 runs scored and 270 allowed, the Cubs...

I wouldn’t want to be like you and other bullets Final: #Reds 11, #Cubs 2. pic.twitter.com/DoXckeADco— Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) June 23, 2018 If you’re on the ledge, just go ahead and jump. Please. Do the rest of us that favor. I turned the game off for the first time this year when Anthony DeSclafani hit that long ball. The writing was on the wall, as easily read as the writing in Annihilation. But... Maybe the Cubs can win the Sunday get-out-of-town game behind Tyler Chatwood. They can at least put Cincinnati in the rearview. And there’s a lot of baseball yet to be played. This...

Chicago Cubs: Tyler Chatwood giving the team enough as fifth starter

Yes, Tyler Chatwood has had mixed results with the Chicago Cubs. However, one has to be happy if he pitches in future starts like he did on Tuesday. It is no secret that Tyler Chatwood is in the midst of a roller coaster season with the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs signed Chatwood, 28, to a […] Chicago Cubs: Tyler Chatwood giving the team enough as fifth starter - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - A Chicago Cubs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Chicago Cubs: How is Tyler Chatwood having success?

Tyler Chatwood’s struggles for the Chicago Cubs with command have been well documented in 2018. But somehow, he’s still getting decent results. How is he doing? Chicago Cubs pitcher Tyler Chatwood took the mound on Tuesday afternoon against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He allowed five walks in his five innings pitched, but he only allowed […] Chicago Cubs: How is Tyler Chatwood having success? - Call to the Pen - Call to the Pen - A Major League Baseball Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

2018 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 65

2018 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 65

Cubs suffer second consecutive shutout at the hands of Brewers I think it is important to start with the good. Mike Montgomery allowed just one run in six innings getting his fourth start yesterday. Mike is going to make it extremely difficult on Joe Maddon and the front office if they think they are going to just send him back to the bullpen when Yu Darvish is ready to return from the disabled list. Obviously, Yu has the kind of pedigree that you have to work him into the rotation when he’s ready to go, despite the struggles he’s had as a Cub. Tyler Chatwood has been a mess throughout...

Chicago Cubs: Tyler Chatwood not to blame for team’s Tuesday loss

Despite turning in a solid performance against Milwaukee Tuesday night, Chicago Cubs right-hander Tyler Chatwood once again assumed the role of scapegoat. The bats giveth and the bats taketh away. One day after the offense rallied in 11 to top the Brewers and assume first place, the Chicago Cubs managed just two hits in a […] Chicago Cubs: Tyler Chatwood not to blame for team’s Tuesday loss - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - A Chicago Cubs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Brewers 4, Cubs 0: Just the facts

Brewers 4, Cubs 0: Just the facts

I watched this game so you didn’t have to. Tyler Chatwood walked only two batters in five innings in Tuesday’s 4-0 Cubs loss to the Brewers. Yay? Well, yes, yay for this, at least: Tyler Chatwood this season - number of batters faced before first walk of game (in order by start):0, 11, 2, 1, 0, 0, 6, 12, 2, 1, 0, 3, 10— Christopher Kamka (@ckamka) June 13, 2018 That’s about the only positive takeaway I can post about this otherwise dull, drab defeat. The Cubs managed just two singles and two walks; just one Cubs runner got past first base: Ben Zobrist, in the second inning,...

2018 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 60

2018 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 60

Cubs jump out to early lead and hold on for 3-1 win. After last year’s spot starts in the rotation, I felt comfortable with the idea of Mike Montgomery being the fifth starter. Don’t get me wrong, I heard those Tyler Chatwood road ERAs and what not from recent seasons and felt like in leaving Colorado, he could be a great addition to the rotation. Certainly, pretty much every team has to use at least six and often seven or eight (or more) starters due to double headers, injuries and just general fatigue for other starters. So as always, I appreciate the way the Cubs front office lines...

Chicago Cubs: Tyler Chatwood’s chances are dwindling as a starter

Tyler Chatwood is heading down the wrong path and it’s only a matter of time until he’s removed from the Chicago Cubs starting rotation. The last time Tyler Chatwood pitched into the seventh inning was April 29. Due to his inability to throw strikes consistently, the Chicago Cubs right-hander’s  pitch count rises quickly. At this […] Chicago Cubs: Tyler Chatwood’s chances are dwindling as a starter - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - A Chicago Cubs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Chicago Cubs: Tyler Chatwood’s struggles, Mike Montgomery’s break-out

Tyler Chatwood’s surface numbers are good for what he is—a fifth starter. But with his ugly peripherals and Mike Montgomery on the cusp of breaking out, the Chicago Cubs rotation may look different when Yu Darvish returns. When the Chicago Cubs signed Chatwood in December, it was the biggest contract of the offseason. 2018 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 54

2018 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 54

Cubs once again rally from early deficit; win 7-4 The Cubs have yet to see excellent Tyler Chatwood for the most part in 2018 with the exception of one fantastic start against the Brewers. They have alternately seen reasonably effective Tyler Chatwood and train wreck Tyler Chatwood. Friday night, reasonably effective Chatwood showed up. It wasn’t dominant, but it was good enough to keep the Cubs in the game. Unfortunately for the Cubs, Zack Wheeler was fantastic for the Mets for six innings. The net result was the Cubs trailing 2-0 after six. But the Mets have an over worked bullpen that...

Cubs 7, Mets 4: Kyle Schwarber home run highlights late-inning comeback

Cubs 7, Mets 4: Kyle Schwarber home run highlights late-inning comeback

Schwarber drove in four runs in only four innings of work Friday night. This was shaping up to be one of those frustrating losses where opportunities were wasted, and a somewhat unexpected pitching performance went for naught. The Cubs couldn’t do anything with Zack Wheeler for six innings, and Brandon Nimmo’s two-run homer off Tyler Chatwood in the third was looking like it just might hold up for the remainder of the evening. Before I get to describing how the Cubs won this game 7-4, let me give some props to Chatwood. Despite issuing four more walks, he limited the damage to Nimmo’s...

Jay Bruce says he’ll stretch more after early back-spasms exit

Jay Bruce’s lower back was sore when he arrived at Citi Field on Friday and only worsened as the day progressed. By the fourth inning, he was ready to call it a night, knocked out by back spasms following his second at-bat against Cubs’ right-hander Tyler Chatwood. “It just wouldn’t loosen up on me,” Bruce...

Cubs 5, Mets 1: Turning points

Cubs 5, Mets 1: Turning points

This game turned on two key innings. Two innings went by in the Cubs’ eventual 5-1 win over the Mets without much of anything happening. Then in the bottom of the third, the Mets loaded the bases on a walk, double and another walk, and you could be forgiven if you thought Jose Quintana had been taking lessons in walking hitters from Tyler Chatwood. Quintana did what he needed to right then, with just one out in the inning. He struck out Jose Bautista and got Michael Conforto to ground out to end the inning, and that seemed to energize him. Including those two hitters, Q retired the last...

Chicago Cubs: It’s time to check in on back-end starting pitching options

If the early returns on Yu Darvish and Tyler Chatwood are any indication, the Chicago Cubs might be making calls for starters sooner rather than later. Sure, defense wins championship. But so does depth. The Chicago Cubs of recent memory serve as evidence to that claim, boasting one of the deepest rosters in the game […] Chicago Cubs: It’s time to check in on back-end starting pitching options - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - A Chicago Cubs Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More
