Tyler Thornburg placed on the injured list

Travis Lakins comes up to take his spot. The Red Sox have been playing much better baseball of late, but there have still been things to complain about. Chief among them, it seems, has been Tyler Thornburg. On the one hand, the righty hasn’t been pitching in any moments that actually matter, instead being relegated to blowouts in either direction. On the other hand, he had performed poorly pretty much every time he took the mound and it was frustrating that he was taking up a roster spot while pitchers with more upside toiled in Triple-A. Earlier this week, Jake had argued it was time for...

Daily Red Sox Links: Eduardo Rodriguez, Tyler Thornburg, Marco Hernandez

In today’s links, two struggling pitchers face very different futures and Marco Hernandez could play himself into a role at the MLB level. Eduardo Rodriguez has flashed brilliance in a Boston uniform but something always seems to catch up with him, like on Tuesday when he allowed three home runs in five innings of work. (John Tomase; NBC Sports Boston) Prior to Wednesday, Tyler Thornburg had amassed 42 2⁄3 total innings across 41 career appearances with the Red Sox. In that time he was 31 percent below league average according to ERA+. That makes him a pitcher the Sox should stop...

It is time to part ways with Tyler Thornburg

It is time to part ways with Tyler Thornburg

It’s been a bumpy road. Unfortunately, not all bumpy roads lead to a smoother one. Two things are true about Tyler Thornburg. He pitched two innings against the Astros and held them scoreless. He also has 41.2 innings pitched for the Red Sox since acquiring him for Travis Shaw (and others*) after the 2016 season. In those 41.2 innings, he has a 6.26 ERA, poor peripheral numbers, and has seen his velocity decline greatly since undergoing Thoracic Outlet Surgery. *Ed. Note: I feel personally attacked by Mauricio Dubon being referred to as “and others” He’s looked hittable in that time...
