Hafner, Wells provide heroics for Yanks

New York Daily News — How special has Vernon Wells' season been? Even when he isn't in the lineup he still finds a way to be the Yankees' hero. Wells - who entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the eighth - delivered an RBI double off Pedro Strop in the 10th inning to lift the Yankees to a 6-4 win over the Orioles to kick off a three-game set at Camden Yards.

ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELLS: After being left out of the lineup Monday, Vernon Wells was still a difference-maker. In the 10th, after Ichiro Suzuki, who started over Wells, knocked a leadoff double off Pedro Strop, Wells followed with a go-ahead ground-rule double. Wells continues to be an unbelievable story.

Vernon Wells adds second base to resume

CBSSports.com Fantasy — Yankees outfielder Vernon Wells has experienced a season of firsts. A few weeks ago he played third base for the first time in his career and Wednesday against the Mariners he played second base for the first time. Wells started at DH Wednesday, but when manager Joe Girardi needed a pitcher in the ninth inning of Wednesday's 12-2 loss, he turned to infielder Alberto Gonzalez to get the final out, which prompted Wells to come off the bench to play second base.
