Tigers' Victor Martinez is quietly hitting the ball harder than ever

Martinez is tearing the cover off the baseball this year. DETROIT -- Lost in the doldrums of a frozen Detroit Tigers offense is the little hot streak Victor Martinez has going on. It's hard to see the positives with the lack of hitting going on with the rest of the team, but Martinez is already significantly better than he was last season. Last year, Martinez was dealing with left knee issues that required surgery in the 2014 offseason and later landed him on the disabled list mid-season. After an All-Star 2014 where he went .335/.409/.565 with 32 home runs and 103 RBI, last year was a...

Mike Pelfrey's bad 4th inning wasn't his fault, but he still needs to pitch better

Pelfrey's defense let him down, resulting in a costly three-run inning. At first glance, Mike Pelfrey's start against the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday wasn't any better than his three previous outings in a Tigers uniform. He allowed five runs on nine hits in six innings, resulting in his fourth loss of the season. However, there are a couple of major caveats to the above paragraph. Pelfrey did not issue a walk on Tuesday, a stark improvement over the 12 walks he allowed in his first three starts. A small mechanical adjustment appears to be the reason for Pelfrey's improved command, and...

Game 20 Preview: Oakland Athletics at Detroit Tigers

Justin Verlander and Sonny Gray square off in a battle of aces at Comerica Park. In past seasons, when Justin Verlander struggled throughout the month of April, there would always be one start where fans knew that things were starting to turn around. It was always obvious, too. In 2011, for instance, he no-hit the Toronto Blue Jays on May 7. The year prior, he held the Los Angeles Angels to one run in 8 1/3 innings. In 2009, it was a nine-strikeout, seven shutout inning performance against the New York Yankees. Verlander's last start, in which he struck out 10 Cleveland Indians hitters in...

Detroit Tigers links: Jose Berrios is coming to the big leagues

We would have preferred he stay in the minors. Well, that didn't take long. Just 21 games into the season, the Minnesota Twins are calling up their best pitching prospect, Jose Berrios. The good news is, according to his Facebook, he will be starting tomorrow. That means the Detroit Tigers avoid his first start when they begin their series with the Twins on Friday. The bad news is he is really good at pitching. The Twins made a bit of curious decision not calling him up last year when they were in the thick of the playoff race and in need of pitching help. But with Berrios throwing a...

Game #20: Tigers offense comes alive in 7-3 victory over A's

Miguel Cabrera pounced on Kendall Graveman with two home runs; and Victor Martinez joined the party with a round-tripper of his own -- as the Tigers' bats came alive with a 7-3 win after posting a .144 batting average over their last five games. If there was a time to take advantage of a struggling ball club, now was the time... After dropping two-of-three games in Toronto, the Athletics looked to bounce back against the Tigers -- as they opened up a four-game series in Detroit. Unfortunately, the dormant Tigers offense erupted against Kendall Graveman -- tagging him for six runs and 10...

Tigers' Victor Martinez pulled from game in KC after being hit by a pitch

At least his left knee didn't take the beating. The Kansas City Royals pummeled the Detroit Tigers pitching staff, but it was Victor Martinez who got the worst of it. In the eighth inning trailing 8-6 with the bases loaded and two outs, V-Mart was drilled in the leg by Kelvin Herrera and removed from the game. Miguel Cabrera had just struck out on three pitches, all sliders that had him looking silly. With Martinez at the plate batting left-handed, Herrera threw another that got away from him. The pitch nailed Martinez on his kneecap, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said on Fox Sports Detroit's...
