Tigers lineup: Miguel Cabrera at third base, Nick Castellanos not starting in series finale

The Tigers are without a designated hitter in this series, so manager Brad Ausmus said he planned to give Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Castellanos each one start off. WASHINGTON -- It's Nick Castellanos' day to come off the bench. The red-hot Castellanos is not in the starting lineup tonight for the finale of the interleague series between the Detroit Tigers and the Washington Nationals. The Tigers are without a designated hitter in this series, so manager Brad Ausmus said he planned to give Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Castellanos each one start...

Brad Ausmus second-guesses own decision to use Victor Martinez as PH with first base open

Ausmus said he was looking to bury the Washington Nationals when he should have simply been playing to try to get the lead. WASHINGTON -- Brad Ausmus said he was looking to bury the Washington Nationals when he should have simply been playing to try to get the lead. Ausmus said Tuesday afternoon that if he could redo the eighth inning of his team's 5-4 loss to the Washington Nationals on Monday night, he wouldn't send Victor Martinez to the plate with two outs and a runner on second in a tie game. The Nationals predictably walked Martinez to face Jarrod...

Victor Martinez fires back at Ausmus detractors, says losing falls on players

Victor Martinez fires back at Ausmus detractors, says losing falls on players

Detroit takes a six-game losing streak into a trip out East. DETROIT -- The detractors are out in full force again. "Fire Ausmus," they scream, aimed at Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus. And perhaps many of you reading this are in that boat. But Victor Martinez has a message for the fans Sunday after the Tigers dropped their sixth straight game in stunning, 8-3 fashion to the Texas Rangers: "He's not the one who went out there and played," Martinez said. "It was our fault. It's easy to blame the manager for this and that. We're the ones who have been...

Victor Martinez to play first base, Miguel Cabrera DH in series finale vs. Texas

The Tigers have lost five straight games. DETROIT -- Brad Ausmus tipped his hand on Saturday when he said Victor Martinez would likely see first base soon. That day happens to be today. Martinez will play first for the first time in 2016 and hit fourth as the Detroit Tigers, losers of a season-high five straight, play their series finale against the Texas Rangers (1:10 p.m., FSD) at Comerica Park. Miguel Cabrera will remain in his No. 3 spot in the lineup but only hit exclusively.  Martinez, limited due after preseason knee surgery, only played 10 games at...

Detroit Tigers notes: Expect Victor Martinez to play first base soon

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Martinez, 37, could play third base two or three times in the next four games. DETROIT -- Miguel Cabrera could be relieved soon. And it might happen as soon as Sunday. Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Saturday before their game against the Texas Rangers (1:10 p.m., FS1) he plans on playing Victor Martinez at first base "two or three times" over the next four games, including a three-game series that kicks off Monday in Washington. There was some thought put into playing Martinez, 37, at first base today, Ausmus said, but...

Victor Martinez is healthy and crushing baseballs again

A healthy Martinez is bad news for the rest of the American League. It is indescribably great for the Detroit Tigers to have a healthy Victor Martinez batting in the cleanup spot for them. When a hamstring issue kept him sidelined for a good chunk of spring training this year, the fanbase collectively cringed. Thankfully, Martinez returned in glorious form. He has picked up right where he ended 2014 when he finished runner-up for the American League MVP Award. So far this year he's hitting .341/.396/.625 with a wOBA of .433 and has been worth 188 wRC+. On top of that, he was recently named...

Game 27 Preview: Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians

Michael Fulmer takes on Cleveland's Trevor Bauer as the Tigers look to avoid a second consecutive sweep at the hands of the Indians. Regression to the mean is a natural part of baseball. Hot pitchers eventually come back to earth. Struggling hitters find a way to break out of slumps. As baseball statistics have evolved, we have gotten better at predicting which trends will continue and which are not sustainable. Stats tell us that Jordan Zimmermann probably won't finish the season with a 0.55 ERA, for example. One area where those stats have not yet touched is win-loss records, especially...

Tigers prospect Matt Boyd throws 8 shutout innings in Mud Hens loss

Scores, news, and notes from the Detroit Tigers' farm system on Wednesday, May 4, 2016. Gwinnett Braves 2, Toledo Mud Hens 1 (box) Matt Boyd threw eight shutout frames as part of 10 (!) scoreless innings before Tyler Collins drove in the first run of the game in the 11th inning. After Bruce Rondon blew a save opportunity in the bottom of the inning, Braves top prospect Ozzie Albies drove in the winning run off Jeff Ferrell in the bottom of the 12th. Cameron Maybin was Toledo's lone offensive threat, reaching base three times in five plate appearances. Former Tiger Ian Krol notched the win...

Indians 4, Tigers 0: Tigers shut out by Corey Kluber

The Tigers got Klubbed. Corey Kluber was the story of the night as he shut out the Tigers over nine innings for an old-fashioned pitching gem. Anibal Sanchez nearly matched the pace, but a mini-meltdown in the fourth inning allowed all four of the Indians' runs to score. Sanchez looked good outside of that inning, and ultimately lasted seven innings, striking out seven. The Tigers threatened in the second inning, loading the bases with only one out. But a forceout at home plate and a strikeout ended the threat. After that inning, the Tigers would only get a runner past first base one time....

The Tigers' starting rotation has been a problem early in 2016

The Tigers' starting pitching ranks below average in almost every statistical area this season. From 2012 to 2014, the Detroit Tigers boasted one of the best rotations in baseball behind pitchers like Justin Verlander, David Price, Max Scherzer, Anibal Sanchez, and Doug Fister. Over those three seasons, the Tigers led all MLB teams with 2,725 strikeouts, a 3.35 FIP, and 61.2 wins above replacement (fWAR). However, things looked much different in 2015, as Price was traded, Verlander and Sanchez struggled, and Alfredo Simon and Shane Greene joined the club. As a result, the rotation fell on...

What's wrong with Justin Verlander?

With a fastball that has been teed off of at times in 2016 and hitters no longer chasing out of the zone, Verlander needs to make adjustments in order to stay effective. Justin Verlander struggled mightily again on Tuesday. By allowing seven earned runs in five innings, the Tigers' presumptive ace raised his season-long ERA to 6.49. The general hope has been that Verlander is merely experiencing a bump in the road, and a 22.2 percent strikeout rate lends credence to the idea that sooner or later he's going to figure it out. However, there are troubling signs for Verlander going forward....

Game 26 Preview: Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians

Anibal Sanchez takes the mound looking for his second win in a row. Six days ago, the Anibal Sanchez threat level was approaching DEFCON 2. All was not lost after a rough start against the Cleveland Indians, but many fans were wondering if we were ever going to see the real Anibal Sanchez again. Well, sort of. Sanchez spun what some would consider his best start of the season, limiting the Oakland Athletics to two runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out nine, and while he did allow a home run, the A's never really threatened at any point in the game. The only problem? Sanchez...
