Bleh: Mets 3, Phillies 0

Despite a great return start from Velasquez, the Phils drop the fourth game to split against the Mets Vince Velasquez returned from his short stay on the disabled list to take on Jacob deGrom and the Mets in the fourth and final game of their series at Citi Field. Brandon Nimmo walked the game off on a three-run home run in the bottom of the tenth to give the Mets the 3-0 victory. Tip: Try not to walk Jose Reyes, he’s a walking out Both starters were excellent: Velasquez went six scoreless, allowing two hits and one walk with three strikeouts on 85 pitches; deGrom tossed eight scoreless,...

Phillies minor leaguer Tom Eshelman working through struggles

ALLENTOWN — Tom Eshelman was far from the centerpiece of the deal for the Phillies when they traded Ken Giles to Houston in 2015. That title probably belonged to former No. 1 overall pick Mark Appel, or maybe Vince Velasquez.

Hittin’ Season 198: Phillies creeping closer to 1st place

On Episode 198 of “Hittin’ Season,” host John Stolnis recaps the Phils two-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles and investigates the possibility of a trade for Manny Machado. Sometimes, you have to wonder how the Phillies are doing it. How are the Phils, a team whose top hitter is Odubel Herrera, a guy with a .276 batting average, a team in which Jorge Alfaro, Carlos Santana, Scott Kingery, Rhys Hoskins, Aaron Altherr, Nick Williams and Andrew Knapp are all hitting under .250, doing it? How are the Phils, a team in which two of their regular starters, Vince Velasquez and Nick Pivetta,...

Phillies pull out an impressive win over Nats, reach midpoint on high note

The Phillies reached the midpoint of the season on Saturday and capped off the first half with an impressive win over the division rival Nationals in front of a sold-out crowd at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies lost 96 games a year ago, now they find themselves after Saturday's 3-2 win as a wild-card team if the postseason were to begin today. It's a turnaround to be happy about, for sure.Things, however, didn't look great early on Saturday night as starter Vince Velasquez exited after the second inning after taking an Adam Eaton line drive off his right forearm. Lucky lefty: Phillies 3, Nationals 2

The Phillies won and Vince Velasquez’s right elbow wasn’t pulverized. By a score of 3-2, the Phillies beat the Nationals on Saturday. And in many ways, it was an unlikely victory. Well, in one way: this ended up being a bullpen game. Here’s what happened: With two outs in the second inning, Vince Velasquez got nailed on his right elbow — also known as his pitching elbow — with a screaming 96mph liner off the bat of Adam Eaton. It didn’t even knock him down at first, he just twirled him around. He immediately started looking for the ball and found it, and since his right arm...

Pay Nola

Pay Nola

It’s time to bring Aaron Nola out of the financial shadow of pre-arbitration, and pay him like the rotation leader he is In December 2016, the Phillies were devoid of locked-up core pieces, reliant on trying to renovate the last of the decaying championship core while hoping for a young call-up or two to emerge in 2017. There were fragments of hope here and there: Cesar Hernandez led the Majors in triples; Tommy Joseph triumphantly debuted with 21 homers after nearly succumbing to concussions; Jerad Eickhoff started to look like he may be legit; and Vince Velasquez struck out 16 Padres....
