Jim Ingraham: Cleveland Indians' homestand ends without Vinnie Pestano on roster

Know this about Terry Francona: Asking him to go into a doubleheader with a short-handed bullpen is like asking Columbus to discover America while sailing in a bathtub. You would have a better chance of getting Francona to wear a hairpiece. To the Indians' manager, relief pitchers are oxygen itself. As a manager, you can't survive without them.

Indians notebook: Reliever C.C. Lee called up, Vinnie Pestano sent to Triple-A

CLEVELAND: The Indians made a pitching move before the doubleheader in an effort to strengthen the bullpen. Right-hander C.C. Lee was recalled from Triple-A Columbus and Tribe right-hander Vinnie Pestano was optioned to Columbus. After making the club out of spring training, it appeared Pestano had found his old form that helped him become one of the best setup men in the league in 2011 and ’12. Two years ago, Pestano had a club-record 36 holds. But his spring form was nowhere to be found once the season began. Pestano allowed six runs in three appearances, partly due to his average fastball...

Indians notebook: Vinnie Pestano pitching for his life

CLEVELAND: Reliever Vinnie Pestano is still a work in progress, says manager Terry Francona. The only problem is that Pestano might not have a great deal of time to progress, at least in Cleveland. The Indians are carrying eight relief pitchers. That could change when center fielder Michael Bourn returns from the disabled list. And it most likely will change once Bourn and designated hitter Jason Giambi return. Bourn could return in a few days, Giambi not too long after that. “We have a lot of guys in the pen,” Pestano said Saturday. “It’s one of those things where I’m out there...

Pitchers Cody Allen: Think Vinnie Pestano three years ago. Allen barreled through the Indians' minor-league system, and never blinked when he made the transition to the big-league club in 2012. In his first 105 career appearances in the major leagues, he had a 2.79 ERA and averaged 10.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

Vinnie Pestano, Elliot Johnson make Indians’ Opening Day roster

GOODYEAR, Ariz.: Vinnie Pestano knows that making the Indians’ Opening Day roster doesn’t mean his work is done.He learned that last season, when the once-dependable setup man struggled with mechanical issues and was demoted to Triple-A Columbus. But Pestano, 29, checked the first personal goal off his list Saturday when he was told he’d made the roster for the March 31 opener in Oakland.“I’ve worked hard this spring, worked hard in the off-season to get back hopefully on the right track,” Pestano said. “I’m getting stronger and figuring it out more and more with each outing....
