Mets could use a big bat for an energy boost in the 2019 season

One of the best ways to breathe some life into the New York Mets next year is to add a big bat to the roster this offseason. When Yoenis Cespedes joined the New York Mets in 2015, his presence helped catapult them into the postseason. Sure, his bat did a lot of the work. The Mets should make a big splash and sign Manny Machado

The Mets could make a big statement by signing the best available free agent. In season three, episode 12 of Breaking Bad, Mike Ehrmantraut told Walter White, “I chose a half measure when I should have gone all the way. I’ll never make that mistake again. No more half measures, Walter.” The New York Mets have become comfortable with half-measures, doing just enough to field a team that they feel can compete or play “meaningful games” down the stretch. When they did choose to go all in by trading for Yoenis Cespedes in 2015, they made it to the World Series. Over the past...

Mets make multiple roster moves, clear 40-man space

The Mets parted with a few players to clear some 40-man roster space. With the free agency period about to begin, the Mets made some moves on Friday to trim their 40-man roster and open up some space to work with. The team began the day with 35 players on their roster but had eight players set to come off the 60-day DL, so some roster maneuvering needed to be done. Of the eight players needing reinstatement, the Mets reinstated six of them: Yoenis Cespedes, Travis d’Arnaud, Eric Hanhold, Bobby Wahl, Juan Lagares, and T.J. Rivera. They chose to outright Rafael Montero and Phillip Evans...

Mets Morning News for October 27, 2018

Your Saturday morning dose of New York Mets and MLB news, notes, and links Meet the Mets Brodie Van Wagenen is apparently the Mets’ choice for their new GM, but the team still has to work out a deal with him. Meanwhile, the Players’ Association is understandably nervous that Van Wagenen had access to a lot of confidential information about players as their agent that he could use against them in negotiations. Joel Sherman attempted to summarize the long, and messy GM search. Yoenis Cespedes underwent heel surgery on Friday and could miss the first half of the 2019 season. Dominic...

Yoenis Cespedes has second heel surgery

Yoenis Cespedes is fully in recover-and-rehab mode for next season after undergoing surgery Friday to remove a calcification in his left heel. In August, the Mets outfielder underwent a similar procedure on his right heel. The surgeries were staggered because Cespedes would have been immobile for several weeks otherwise. The Mets are hopeful Cespedes can...

Austin Jackson was not a very useful addition for the Mets

Austin Jackson was not a very useful addition for the Mets

The Mets added the veteran outfielder off the scrap heap and he didn’t add much value. Towards the end of July, the Mets’ outfield was in a bit of disarray. With both Yoenis Cespedes and Jay Bruce on the shelf, the team was short an outfielder and didn’t have a true center fielder on the roster. Things were so bad that Matt den Dekker was getting significant playing time in center. It was obvious that the Mets needed to add a body just to get through the rest of the season. Enter Austin Jackson, who had been released by the Texas Rangers earlier in the month, and was available for...

With the second round of interviews now concluded, the Mets are expected to make a decision shortly. Peter Alonso continues to tear up the Arizona Fall League, and this time he hit an absolute laser that went for a double. Desmond Lindsay is also showing some power this fall. Mets’ 2015 Yoenis Cespedes trade for Michael Fulmer an unquestionable win

Yoenis Cespedes’ time with the New York Mets hasn’t been perfect, but there’s little doubt the 2015 trade that put him in Flushing was a win for them. This is even truer with the way Michael Fulmer’s career is going. Yoenis Cespedes is an interesting cat. In less than a year, he was traded for […] Mets’ 2015 Yoenis Cespedes trade for Michael Fulmer an unquestionable win - Rising Apple - Rising Apple - A New York Mets Blog Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and More

Yoenis Cespedes’ presence was sorely missed by the Mets this season

Yoenis Cespedes’ presence was sorely missed by the Mets this season

Cespedes continued to battle chronic leg issues before electing to undergo season-ending surgery in late July. When he was healthy this season—or at least as close as one can get to healthy, considering what he was dealing with—Yoenis Cespedes was very much the same Yoenis Cespedes we know and love. In the 37 games Cespedes played in April and May, he posted a 122 wRC+ and 0.9 fWAR. He was on pace for a similar campaign to his 2016 season, in which he put up 3.8 fWAR and hit 31 home runs, driving in 86 runs. But the chronic leg issues he has dealt with since the Mets signed him...
