Give thanks for these Cubs

Yu Darvish was the Cubs leader by fWAR in 2020 | Photo by Ron Vesely/ Yes, even in 2020 Apparently it’s Thanksgiving week, a time that would normally be characterized by a bit of a frenzy at work while we all juggle our commitments so everything is wrapped up enough to enjoy a four-day weekend to give thanks with family, friends and football. However, this is 2020, so even that ritual is complicated by a surging pandemic and desperate pleas from healthcare workers that we all stay home (again and/or still) in the hopes of slowing the spread of COVID-19. In an effort...

Cubs News: Mike Minor looks like an ideal one-year target for the team

In their search for more pitching, the Cubs should be in on veteran Mike Minor. There is no shortage of free agent arms for the Chicago Cubs to pursue this winter and they desperately need some quality behind Yu Darvish and Kyle Hendricks. Given that Alec Mills has earned himself a spot in the team’s […] Cubs News: Mike Minor looks like an ideal one-year target for the team - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - Chicago Cubs News and Fan Community

Cubs News: Yu Darvish just won our hearts if not the Cy Young

Once again, Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish shows he’s a good player and better man. There’s a significant segment of baseball fandom that believes that players are overpaid, greedy whiners who don’t care about the game or fans.  Then along comes a guy like Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish who blows up that assumption. You’ll recall that when Theo Epstein signed […] Cubs News: Yu Darvish just won our hearts if not the Cy Young - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - Chicago Cubs News and Fan Community

Ryan Tepera got a 10th-place MVP vote and that is the weirdest thing ever

Photo by Jonathan Daniel/ This should give you a laugh for the day. Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves was named National League Most Valuable Player Thursday, getting 28 of the 30 first-place votes. Mookie Betts of the Dodgers got the other two top votes. Some Cubs got some downballot votes. Yu Darvish finished 14th, with a couple of votes as high as seventh place. Ian Happ, who had a great start to 2020 and was in the MVP conversation before fading, finished tied for 19th with one 10th-place vote. Also tied for 19th were Max Fried, Dansby Swanson, Devin Williams and Ryan...

Yu Darvish finished second in Cy Young Award voting, but one writer left him off the ballot entirely

Yu Darvish pitching in the postseason at Wrigley Field | Photo by Jonathan Daniel/ The justifications for that ballot are incoherent - let’s talk about why One of the nice things about the Gold Glove Awards this year was that they were based entirely on statistics for 2020. It meant some players who have been overlooked for baseball’s top defensive honor got a chance to shine. It also added an element of transparency and reason to the process that boosted the legitimacy of a process that is often fraught with second guessing and raised eyebrows. Which brings us to a process that...

Cubs News: Yu Darvish finishes second in tight NL Cy Young race

Cubs ace Yu Darvish fell short in his quest to win the 2020 NL Cy Young Award. In 2015, Chicago Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta turned in a historically dominant campaign to earn the team’s first Cy Young nod since Greg Maddux in 1992. It was a miracle season that year in which the Cubs dethroned […] Cubs News: Yu Darvish finishes second in tight NL Cy Young race - Cubbies Crib - Cubbies Crib - Chicago Cubs News and Fan Community

Hoornstra: In defense of a Yu Darvish-less Cy Young Award ballot

What’s the difference between a fifth- and sixth-place ranking in a 60-game season? It meant more to me than it did to Walker Buehler; not so for fans of Darvish and the Cubs who found a temporary target for their Twitter incredulity.

Cubs News: Kyle Hendricks quietly had yet another good year

Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks – rather quietly – had another great season in 2020. When we look back at the starting pitching for the Chicago Cubs in 2020, there were several storylines that got a lot of attention. Yu Darvish was good enough to be part of the NL Cy Young Award discussion. Here is the dumbest Yu Darvish trade proposal you will probably ever see

Here is the dumbest Yu Darvish trade proposal you will probably ever see

Photo by Jonathan Daniel/ No, seriously. It’s ridiculous. Let me preface this by saying that I don’t believe the Cubs will trade Yu Darvish this offseason. To do so would be admitting that they are going into a rebuild, and I do think Theo & Co. are going to at least attempt to make one more run at a title with the current core, even if one of two of them are traded. But those “one or two” aren’t going to include Darvish. I don’t usually write articles based on random trade rumors or proposals, because the overwhelming majority of the time, those don’t come to fruition. But...

Chicago Cubs Rumors: Yu Darvish to Mets? No chance

Although the 2020 season was mostly a disappointing one for the Chicago Cubs, Yu Darvish’s performance was an inherent positive. The Chicago Cubs’ Yu Darvish built on the momentum he established in the second half of the 2019 season, going 8-3 with a 2.01 ERA and NL-best 2.23 FIP in 12 starts.
