Solarte’s error gives the Jays another loss

Solarte’s error gives the Jays another loss

Blue Jays 3 Red Sox 4 I don’t think I’ve ever been so pissed off at a dropped popup before. Jays tie the game in the top of the 8th, then in the bottom of the inning Xander Bogaerts hits a 1-out double, steals third, but I think all might be ok when Blake Swihart pops the ball up to just back of second. But Yangeris Solarte had the ball go off the side of his glove and the go ahead run scores. Just hard to believe. We didn’t do much offensively. Justin Smoak drove in Lourdes Gurriel in the 3rd inning. Then in the 8th Gurriel hit a 1-out homer (crushed it over the wall in left)....

Red Sox survive crazy eighth for sweep of Blue Jays

Red Sox survive crazy eighth for sweep of Blue Jays

Before last nights series finale against the Blue Jays, Alex Cora was pointedly asked if he thought it would be important for the Red Sox to have a reliever in a specific eighth-inning role as they head toward the playoffs. The manager insisted that he didnt.I think we need versatility, Cora said. Guys that can match up with whoever we’re facing. ...Obviously those decisions will happen before we play game 163 or we play the division series. We’ll look at the matchups we like and the matchups we can exploit or we can go from there.Clearly, after last night, the decisions still might take a...

Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 3: Another series, another sweep

Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 3: Another series, another sweep

And the magic number is 6. It’s a sweep and it’s win number 101, though there will be some negativity coming out of this win. First, the positives. They won, which was neat, and the magic number is down to six. On top of that, Eduardo Rodriguez looked very good and was efficient, which is huge given how important of a role he figures to play in October. Boston needs him on track, and he looked that way on Thursday. Plus, they got some power from J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers. However, they also had to overcome another poor performance, this time from Joe Kelly. The righty had nothing...

Red Sox vs. Blue Jays lineup: What’s better than 100 wins? 101 wins

And so on. The Red Sox (100-46) look to continue their march toward their best-ever record when they take on the Blue Jays (65-80) tonight at Fenway Park (7:10 p.m., NESN). About tonight’s game: The increasingly dominant Eduardo Rodriguez (12-4, 3.64 ERA) looks to pick up where the increasingly dominant David Price left off last night. He’ll face off with Sam Gaviglio (3-8, 5.25 ERA), who, like most of the Jays, is still trying to figure things out at this point. Gaviglio will face a goofy Sox lineup that sees Mookie Betts taking a rest, Andrew Benintendi in the leadoff spot, Ian...

Game #146 Preview: Gaviglio vs Rodriguez

Blue Jays (65-80) vs Red Sox (100-46) The Blue Jays wrap up their 3 game series in Boston tonight, looking to avoid the sweep at the hands of the Red Sox. Tonight’s game gets underway at 7:10 ET. Blue Jays Starter Sam Gaviglio looks to continue the Jays’ recent trend of amazing starts in Boston, while looking to bounce back from his last poor start against Cleveland. In that last start, Gaviglio went just 4.1 innings, allowing 5 runs on 6 hits while surrendering a pair of home runs. On the season, Sammy G is 3-8 with a 5.25 ERA, struggling through most starts, although he does have a...
