Not the start the Nats were hoping for; 8-5 Braves in “second-half” opener in D.C.

Not the start the Nats were hoping for; 8-5 Braves in “second-half” opener in D.C.

Atlanta came out swinging and running and took the first game of three in Washington, D.C.; 8-5 Braves over the Nationals. If this is a sign of things to come for the Washington Nationals in the second half, it might be a rough ride. Stephen Strasburg got knocked around by the Atlanta Braves (8 H, 6 ER over 4 2⁄3 IP) and then got into a heated exchange with rotation-mate Max Scherzer in the home dugout after he was lifted, with the two starters taking it down the tunnel, into the clubhouse, to finish their conversation. Not exactly return to the rotation for Strasburg, or the start out of...

Braves open post-break run with 8-5 win over Nationals

Braves open post-break run with 8-5 win over Nationals

That was fun. Following a four-day hiatus, the Atlanta Braves returned to action on Friday evening and the Washington Nationals were in the opposite dugout. Though Atlanta entered as significant underdogs (at least according to Las Vegas) in the opener, the Braves began the second “half” of the season on a positive note with an 8- victory. Before the first pitch, it was noteworthy to see Ronald Acuña in the lead-off spot and that decision immediately paid dividends. The rookie outfielder singled, stole second base and came across for Atlanta’s first run after a double from Ozzie...

Offense, leadoff hitter Acuna push Braves past Nationals

Maybe the Braves’ offense really did need the All-Star break. Or just Ronald Acuna hitting leadoff.

Ozzie Albies leaves game early with hamstring tightness

Ozzie Albies leaves game early with hamstring tightness

The Braves’ second baseman was pulled early in the first game against the Nationals as a precautionary measure. There have been a lot of players’ who performances have propelled the Braves near the top of the NL East in the first half of 2018. Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis have been outstanding, but its arguable that the most important cog in the lineup has been Ozzie Albies. Albies has combined strong defense at second, playmaking speed, and a surprising uptick in power to post 3.4 fWAR so far in 2018 with 20 home runs and 10 stolen bases which is pretty insane when you consider...

Stephen Strasburg and Ryan Zimmerman are back in the majors with the Nationals for the start of this weekend’s three-game set with the Braves. Braves kick off second ‘half’ with visit to nation’s capital

Here we go. With the All-Star Break in the rear view mirror, the Atlanta Braves are back in action on Friday evening. In fitting fashion, the second “half” (note that the Braves have played more than half of their games) begins with a series in the nation’s capital against the Washington Nationals and right-hander Stephen Strasburg takes the ball for the visitors. Strasburg’s relationship with the Braves has always been odd but, on the whole, he has been pretty good this season. The 30-year-old has a 3.46 ERA (3.58 FIP) in 13 outings and, beyond that, Strasburg is striking out...

Nationals come out of the Break looking to make up ground in NL East...

It all starts this weekend with a three-game set against the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves in Washington, D.C.’s Nationals Park. “For me it’s not disappointing,” Davey Martinez told reporters in New York, when asked to sum up the Washington Nationals’ first 96 games of the 2018 campaign, over which they went 48-48, finishing the so-called first-half 5.5 game out in the NL East. “We’ve put ourselves in a position that every game we play is important no matter who we’re playing...” - Mike Rizzo on the Nationals’ first-half of 2018 “People can say look at our record,...
